Fish ok as only meat option?

Apologies for another menu thread!

DP and I have been veggie for years and have only recently started occasionally eating fish. The wedding will have loads of veggie friends but also some quite traditional meat & 2 veg type guests.

Everyone coming knows we don't eat meat and, though I don't think anyone would be expecting us to serve a meat option, some are probably wondering a bit worried what the food will be like.

Would you meat eaters be satisfied with being offered just one 'meaty' main dish and for that to be fish?

Am thinking probably Trout as most people seem to like it and we can get it locally so know where it's come from. Served with seasonal veg like new potatoes and asparagus. The other option will be a really nice veggie thing (probably filo parcel with tasty filling).

The wedding is ages away so idle thoughts at the mo but would be interested in your views.

Or fish and chips! Although that would be smelly/greasy! Yum though.

Floggingmolly · 07/02/2017 17:43

Do they usually serve fish in it's entirety, complete with skin and eyes?? Envy

IMissGin · 07/02/2017 17:43

Posh fish n chips sounds awesome! I had some recently with a gorgeous beetroot 'tartare' sauce... salivating just thinking about it

BackforGood · 07/02/2017 17:46

I personally would quite like fish as long as it isn't sitting there with it's head and tail on, looking at me. But I do agree with other people that there are quite a proportion of people who don't like fish, so it's probably not a good choice if you are looking for an 'alternative' to what most people will be having.

PerspicaciaTick · 07/02/2017 17:46

Flogging, I have to admit I've only had it with smaller fish such as trout. Oh, and snapper on holiday or bass (at a fancy meal out). I quite like fish, but can't stand having people watch me eat it.

NickyEds · 07/02/2017 17:49

Floggin that's how I usually see trout yes, complete with head and bones. It's trickier to fillet than other fish.

If you're only including the fish to appease meat eaters then I'd be tempted to either have chicken or not bother at all and just let them have the vegetarian choice. Weirdly, all of the people I know who would genuinely object to a vegetarian only menu would also turn their nose up at most fish, and definitely trout!

LilQueenie · 07/02/2017 17:51

you can't claim to be veggie if you still eat fish.

Waltermittythesequel · 07/02/2017 17:55

You couldn't pay me to eat fish! And trout sounds worse than others!

Also, as PP says, the smell would be vile.

However, I'd be more than happy to eat veggie options and even if not, it's one day/meal and won't kill anyone!

Artandco · 07/02/2017 17:57

I would prefer to just see two different veggie options TBH. I eat meat and fish but fish in particular I'm fussy about what and how.

MrsHiddleston · 07/02/2017 17:58

I don't like fish... I'd eat a fish finger if I was starving but that's about it. Having said that I'd happily eat the vegetarian option.

Iamastonished · 07/02/2017 17:58

"Do they usually serve fish in it's entirety, complete with skin and eyes??"

Fish like trout and sardines are nearly always served whole.

FatOldBag · 07/02/2017 18:02

God no, I hate fish. I think lots of people do and it smells. I'd be perfectly happy with just a vegetarian menu though, you don't need meat at every single meal!

Minty82 · 07/02/2017 18:05

Gosh, slightly startled by the responses to this one! We eat meat but had fish (halibut) as the main course at our wedding as it was our favourite of the caterer's dishes we tried. There was a vegetarian alternative but you couldn't opt into it as we had to tell the caterers beforehand how many vegetarians were coming. So if you weren't one of them it was fish or nothing. And it was bloody delicious! Have been to loads of weddings with salmon as the only main too.

empirerecordsrocked · 07/02/2017 18:06

I hate fish. Can't eat it. Would happily have veggie option though.

Sidge · 07/02/2017 18:22

I like meat and most fish, but don't like trout. It's almost too 'fishy'! And given that it's usually served entire, can be very offputting.

I'd prefer a veggie dish (as long as not dominated by mushrooms, most veggie dishes seem to be something mushroomy).

I'd love something like feta cheese filo parcels, or posh fish and chips.

WingMirrorSpider · 07/02/2017 18:27

I didn't realise so many people hated fish! I love it and choose it 9 times out of 10 if I'm eating out.

apeculiarparcel · 07/02/2017 18:28

I think trout would be a very bad idea. If you were to do fish I would stick to white fish like cod or seabass or possibly salmon. Definately no bones.

NameChange30 · 07/02/2017 18:30

White fish like salmon?! Confused

ChocolateFuzz · 07/02/2017 18:35

I hate vegetables and I'm allergic to fish so that wouldn't work for me at all

Artandco · 07/02/2017 18:36

Chocolate- what all vegetables?what do you eat?

expatinscotland · 07/02/2017 18:37

I love seafood so I'd love it. But in your case I'd just do two veggie mains. Going without meat won't kill anyone. Someone's always going to fuss.

nancy75 · 07/02/2017 18:41

I love fish but trout would be a bit too fishy for lots of people. Agree with pp, either go for 2 veggie options or a veggi & a chicken

Iamastonished · 07/02/2017 18:55

"I hate vegetables"

All vegetables? So you don't like tomato soup or onion bhajis or beans on toast?

SparklesandBangs · 07/02/2017 18:58

I think I'd go for 2 veggie options keeping true to yourself
Or if you want to cater for your meat and 2 veg go for chicken as it seems to be universally popular

sonlypuppyfat · 07/02/2017 19:04

I've just cooked a beautiful vegetarian meal, I ate it half an hour ago and now I'm absolutely starving. Please put something meaty on. You may be vegetarian but not all your guests will be
