Fish ok as only meat option?

Apologies for another menu thread!

DP and I have been veggie for years and have only recently started occasionally eating fish. The wedding will have loads of veggie friends but also some quite traditional meat & 2 veg type guests.

Everyone coming knows we don't eat meat and, though I don't think anyone would be expecting us to serve a meat option, some are probably wondering a bit worried what the food will be like.

Would you meat eaters be satisfied with being offered just one 'meaty' main dish and for that to be fish?

Am thinking probably Trout as most people seem to like it and we can get it locally so know where it's come from. Served with seasonal veg like new potatoes and asparagus. The other option will be a really nice veggie thing (probably filo parcel with tasty filling).

The wedding is ages away so idle thoughts at the mo but would be interested in your views.

We're veggie and didn't provide meat or fish. Even the stuffiest uncles were too polite to grumble.
This is a good point. Whatever you serve, people would have to be fucking rude to actually moan about it - unless it was a cannibal buffet, or an all-seafood menu or something! Even then, I think people would just politely 'not feel very hungry' and just nibble some bread.

Your friends will know you're both veggie so their expectation will probably be that the meal will be veggie anyway. Just go for it, veg it up!

I'd prefer the veg option over trout. Just not a fan of fish.

However I went to a meat free wedding recently. It was all delicious middle eastern food. It was colourful, really hearty and everyone else seemed to love it too, even my DP who believes a plate of meat is the be all end all.

I agree..I only eat fish in batter ...

I would maybe look at a second veggie , maybe a cheese option of some sort particularly for traditional older relatives.

So you are a Pescatarian. A person who eats veg n fish, for those saying u r not a vegetarian.

As u can c a lot of people don't like fish and trout is quite strong. Could you not serve a veggie option and a meat option? If not just go for veggie, u can't please everyone.

Two veggie meals one bland and one not.

Bland for the no fish, mushrooms, nuts people (I'm in this camp). Perhaps this one could be cheesy.

Not bland one could be something vegan friendly.

You can't cater for fussy buggers

I misread that as "fussy burgers". Grin

I agree though. MIL didn't want us to have beef as the main at our wedding because she thought everyone wouldn't eat it due to BSE. Unsurprisingly there wasn't an issue.

welshweasel sea bass risotto sounds absolutely gorgeous! We had duck pate as a starter so the carnivores did get their fix; just not for the main course. Hungry now...

I think most people who can't go a meal without meat are just fussy buggers who tend not to like fish or veggie food. You can't cater for fussy buggers.

If you're both vegetarian I think people probably won't be expecting you to serve meat or fish anyway - it's your wedding, do it your way! Love the mezze idea.

Quorn is utterly vile!

I liked the suggestion of colourful salads, breads, dips etc. I'd love that!

Don't do quorn! People are often sensitive to it with unpleasant results.

Good veggie food is much better than using a substitute.

If you are going for two veggy meals how about making one with quorn as a meat substitute, which might appeal to the die hard carnivores more.

I'm an out and proud meat-eater but occasionally cook veggie meals and am never hungry half an hour later!

I like sea bass, actually! I'd forgotten that! But trout...boak.

Fruitboxjury. I like your idea. I like it a lot. It would look SO pretty, and could be made kid friendly with some thought too.

Chocolate surely you'd be dissatisfied with pretty much any meal then, since most of them contain vegetables Grin

Of course I eat vegetables but it's more of a necessary evil, I like tomato soup and vegetable soup but other than that I can't get used to them no matter how many times I try

I've just cooked a beautiful vegetarian meal, I ate it half an hour ago and now I'm absolutely starving.

You clearly didn't get your portion right then. Veggie food can absolutely be as filling as meaty meal.

Lol at mushrooms being the trout of vegetables Grin

I hate mushrooms but like trout! Sea bass is my favourite fish though. Sea bass risotto, YUM

I also had no idea that fish is so commonly disliked! I would have thought it was a pretty standard thing to eat.

To be honest OP, just serve whatever you want to serve and accept that some fussy twats people will grumble.

A different idea, how about totally changing the style of food so that people aren't thinking about whether there is meat or fish (I would say most European or British style menus would be missing something without it), they're thinking how lovely the food is.

Specifically, Greek or middle eastern foods could be the way forward such as different dips, beautiful, colourful rice salads, roasted or dressed vegetables, different breads, lentil and chickpea curries, even halloumi etc. A lof of these dishes can be quite economical to make in large quantities as well as being different. Their flavours are subtle and suit many palates. Your meat and two veg guests may still not like it but at least it won't be simply because it's vegetarian? Personally I am a huge fish eater (not much meat) but would delight in seeing that kind of spread at a wedding!

Just a thought.

Like PPs I won't eat fish, neither will DH. We'd both quite happily have the veg option if it was something like you described.

I'm a meat eater who loves fish and always choose it when eating out, but I can't stomach trout at any price. It's a very earthy taste and often served whole, so overly demanding at a function. A delicate white fish or posh fish and chips would be much better if not two veggie options, one without mushrooms, they're the trout of vegetables Grin

What, so all the vegetarians will not be starving but the omnivores will? Don't be daft. Unless they're allergic to an ingredient, anyone can eat a vegetarian meal without harm coming to them and without starving. In fact, some omnivores regularly enjoy meals without animal protein!

welshweasel · 07/02/2017 19:10

Posh fish and chips fine. Salmon fine. Not trout! We had a sea bass risotto as starter at our wedding and everyone ate it.
We had a meat main though.
