Have you got married abroad, just you, dp and your dc? Please come and tell me about it!

So dp and I want to get married, but after lots of thinking about it and attending friends weddings we've decided it would suit us best going abroad (malta?) getting hitched just us and 4yo dd and then coming back and having a big party for all friends and family.

My mum and sister would be fine about it, his family would probably be unhappy.
We just really don't want a big day and then have to deal with family during the day, dp's mum is quite toxic and he'd be worrying about her all day. I've never wanted a big wedding and since my lovely dad died 3 years ago it makes me want one even less.
Dp and I have been together for over 10years, I feel we should just on with it!

Has anyone done this and how did your wedding go? Was there any fallout from family (or friends) afterwards? Can you give me any tips

We are going to Cyprus for my son's wedding. Only parents, siblings and close friends. twenty six in total. They are having a bash for extended families and friends the week after they return. This is the wedding they want and we are all very pleased and excited for them. Counting down the days.

We did this, before dc came along. It was just the two of us, it was very romantic and we had a big knees up when we got home. Neither of us particularly wanted a big public spectacle and a warm, sunny beach in St Lucia for just the two of us was perfect. We booked a wedding package which meant we had a dedicated advisor to help us plan the day and provide hair & make up, the registrar, the photographer and the flowers etc. It was straightforward and lovely.

Sounds lovely MrsAdorabelle, I'm thinking of booking a wedding package too, seems more stress free. Did you tell your families what you were planning or just go and do it?

We went to Kenya for ours.We used another couple at the resort for our witnesses. We got a video done to try to appease my parents/the inlaws and had a photographer too.

Oh yes it was all planned. In fact my mum, bro & sis we're going to come but mum was quite ill and took a bad turn so they decided not to come, which was a shame but they were perfectly happy for us to go. My dad died years ago so he wasn't there anyway.

We're going on holiday to Las Vegas and have planned to get married while we are there. Neither of us want a big fuss, months of stressful planning, ongoing conversations about 'the dress' the colour scheme, the seating plan. So not to upset Parents and siblings (too much), we will tell them a couple of weeks before we go.

Ah thanks for replying maria, sounds perfect. We have similar reasons for not wanting a big wedding, just such a faff!

I'm not sure about telling people before we go, I think it could lead to big family fallout and even people booking last minute flights
