Just seen an upside down rainbow. Very very clear visible for an hour or so. Anyone else see it?

Wish I had that sounds amazing, didnt know of such things... am off to google it now

taffetacat · 17/03/2010 21:18

I googled it. Its apparently caused by ice crystals high in the atmosphere and is only normally seen in the polar regions. It was amazing, felt quite scary at the time, thought the world had gone a bit odd. I know, ridiculous.

Have a pic of it on my phone but am complete technophobe so no idea how to put on my profile.

In fact cursing iTunes store at present as so totally hopeless at it all ands its taking me hours just to buy some flipping tunes.....grrrrr

Hey taffeta where in the www are you?

RustyBear · 17/03/2010 21:24

My mum once saw a circular rainbow, but she didn't get a chance to look at it carefully - she was at school in Kent in 1940 and they were on their way to the air-raid shelter - she & her science teacher were told off for stopping to look at it!

A circular one - wow. I am also in Kent.

Very cool
looked it up and wiki referred to it as 'a smile in the sky' how lovely

I wonder if we saw the same one? It was when I was picking DCs up from school, so about 3.30ish? I'm in South London, kind of bordering on Croydon, south. I suppose if it's very high, it'd be seen from quite a wide area?

taffetacat · 18/03/2010 09:49

Serenity - yes we saw it from about 3.45 to 4.45. It may well have been there before, didn't notice it until one of the children shouted "rainbow!"

Assumed they were joking/had got it wrong.
