Geek question: how many types of snow are there?

DS1 and I would like to know.

I know about snow grains already. And the stuff we have outside won't stick to make snowballs or good snowmen [talking of snowmen, check out the one on my profile: we found him today while out walking ] - is this powder snow?

And then on said walk, DS and I were fascinated by very , um, 'crystally' snow. I wasn't sure if it was frost actually. But very geometric crystals (as opposed to flakes...) all pointing upwards...

And I remembered another kind I have seen yesterday, and wondered if they were connected: not snow as such but very fine, but very crystally glinting tiny bits floating down, almost like tiny pieces of glass.

What is it all, and how does it all form? I love it, it is so interesting.
