When would you drive home?

We’re in Bodmin and the gusts are expected to get up to 70mph tomorrow morning with heavy rain. It’s when we’re meant to be leaving and it’s forecast to be no let up all day. We have a long drive up north and I don’t know if the motorway will be safe?

Would you get ahead and leave today instead?

I would, or to be more accurate DH would suggest it as he's more likely to keep an eye on these things, and I would agree.
However the BBC app suggests tomorrow the rain will be ok in the afternoon - though it will still be windy.

Personally I’d leave today but I’m the only driver in my family and I find motorway driving very tiring. What will you be missing by leaving a day early?

Drive home tonight?

I'm driving tomorrow as DD needs to be somewhere, it's forecast 48mph where we will be so not as bad. At 70 I'd be rethinking.

When I lived in the UK I pretty much would never drive anywhere unless absolutely necessary on a Friday anyway.

And yes, I'd be going back a day early if I could.

Yes, I'd pack and leave today. We are doing similar, not a holiday but a work thing. We want to get home when its safer to drive, plus to ensure anything lose in the garden is packed away/strapped down.

Good luck OP.

Hmm good point, I hadn’t even considered this and am driving Somerset-Surrey tomorrow with the kids. Huh!

If you have a choice for a long journey I’d consider going today.
Or at least consider tweaking your departure time

It depends on your location and route, but out in Bodmin I suspect you would have roads that are exposed to the gusts and depending on the level of rain when you start risk of surface water (either flooded points of just the sheer level of rain as it lands before any draining gets a chance)

When you get to the motorway things should be less exposed, but it will depend on the stretch of road and wind direction, plus gusts across the motorway with tress or barriers can “spin” down into the carriageway
Drainage ought to be better but beware of surface water gathering on the hard shoulder and into the first lane

Always beware of high/long/towing vehicles and leave plenty of space around other traffic whilst also keeping an eye out for the dicks who pull into the space that you have left

Follow the highways information and take more service stops then you would usually

PS as @WobblyLondoner has said about the only driver - if you have multiple drivers then decide whether to swap drivers or choose the most confident driver. (But not if they are “confident” beyond their skills)
