The Mirror are predicting we will be blasted with cold weather for 90 hours 4/5 January. Any wise people know how likely this is?

Bavaria! We've lived here a couple of years but had nowhere near this much snow last winter. It's -5 here right now, dropping to -13 in the early hours of tomorrow 🥶

I imagine there are a few German Shepherds round your way (both kinds),

Yowzers! That's properly cold. Hope you are warm and cosy. My little old bungalow has stone floors, so after just a few days of low minus temps, it's getting harder to stay warm. The wood burner will be going on early this evening!

We’re due more overnight. I absolutely hate snow and ice. I could quite happily live my life never seeing snow or ice ever again. In fact I’d be over the moon if temperature never dropped below 10 degrees. Would love to live somewhere warm all year, but I couldn’t leave family behind.

Had a good dump of snow yesterday in Cheshire. It looked beautiful today but caused chaos. Enough that all the schools were closed and the roads treacherous many abandoned cars and accidents. Now it’s -6 and the snow is frozen. Schools already announced they are closed again tomorrow, probably won’t be able to get to work to be honest.
Sick of it - rest of the week looks challenging and am reading concerning forecasts for Thurs/ Fri.
Roll on spring for me (sorry snow lovers).

Sorry for the duplicate posts - can I blame the snow for that too? 🫣

DS and family had the right idea. As soon as school cancelled. They packed up food, hot drinks, put on the right clothing, grabbed sledges and headed to Snowdonia. Was brilliant sunshine, plenty of snow, they had a ball.

We're due more snow tonight, so will see what tomorrow brings.

nannynick · 06/01/2026 05:21

Fed up of this snow now. It’s now day 5 and very little improvement on roads. The village shop cannot get deliveries such as milk, they did get some cakes and bread yesterday so some deliveries getting through.
Coffee supply running low and I don’t really like black coffee. Got some Elmlea, wonder what coffee with that in taste like.

I plan to head to Dundee on Wednesday, then towards Glasgow and down A74(M) and M6 to Carlisle. Then Thursday, Carlisle down M6, M6 Toll, M40 to Berkshire, then to Bracknell.
A weather report I saw yesterday seemed a bit vague on what happens on Thursday, snow M6 area or could be more south. If I can get out of Scotland, am I just heading to snow in England?

beenrumbled · 06/01/2026 06:49

Just started snowing again in Manchester.

But I think our forecast for next few days is mostly sleet and rain with only a lid snow once this passes.

I am off to walk to work.

CatWithThreeLegs · 06/01/2026 07:48

We've got nothing here (Dorset coast), despite weather warnings for snow and ice for the past three days. The Met Office app shows us well within the area for snow & ice and yet nothing for miles around.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 06/01/2026 12:43

First very light snow on the South Essex coast now. Wasn't showing as due on my weather app so is a bit of a surprise.

Is it light or heavy, DH is working in London today and said they have some there at the moment, but nothing where I'm working in north ish Essex coast.

Edited because I see you said light, has it been snowing long?

AngelsWithSilverWings · 06/01/2026 13:13

@Hoolahoophop lasted all of 10 mins. Very very light then a couple of chunky looking flakes and then nothing. A big anti climax!

DH is getting reports from work colleagues in East London saying it's snowing there.

It has gone gloomy and cloudy after a week of bright blue skies and sunshine.

Hoolahoophop · 06/01/2026 13:14

@AngelsWithSilverWings I'd love a snow day for the kids, ill keep fingers crossed for snow in Essex!

AngelsWithSilverWings · 06/01/2026 13:34

@Hoolahoophop it's proper snow now and settling too.

Hoolahoophop · 06/01/2026 13:40

@AngelsWithSilverWings oh good. Its looking a little darker here now, but no snow, but give it a while and we may get yours. Probably around school pick up time so we all get wet while standing at collection.

Cswn · 06/01/2026 15:30

over the snow at this point, spend ages digging out the drive as the weather seemed a lot better this morning and stuff was melting, was about to go out now and get supplies and it’s started heaping down snow again, so trapped in again.

InMySpareTime · 06/01/2026 15:38

As usual here it stayed mostly dry while freezing but now it’s warmed up to like one degree and we have plenty of very cold rain instead of snow.
Everyone else has snow.

How did you get on?

Yesterday definitely seems like it would have been the best day for travel. We had a slight thaw but then another 5inches dumped on top last night 🤦‍♀️

Day 7 of being stuck in the house now!

MarjorieWestriding · 08/01/2026 15:33

Sorry for all you people getting huge dumps of snow!

We had a tiny dusting a few days ago and now it's raining, but that's it.

nannynick · 08/01/2026 20:03

@JazzTheDog I took advantage of the slight thaw and left on Wednesday, got back home a few hours ago (Thursday early evening), having stayed overnight near Carlisle.
More snow in Scotland today I hear and see from pictures. Meanwhile in the Chilterns as I came along the M40 today it was foggy.

Midlands roads in chaos this evening (Thurs). Cars sliding all over the place. Buses stopped. People abandoning their cars, which are then causing even more problems. Roads gridlocked all around me.

Not surprised, according to some sources Birmingham airport is closed, or pretty much closed for arrivals until at least 0030 due snow clearance operations.

RecordBreakers · 09/01/2026 16:57

It's been lovely today here in Birmingham.
Schools closed. Lots of people advised to wfh.
Everyone out building snowmen and/ or going sledging.
Just felt like a proper snow day.

Last night, the roads were chaos and gridlocked all over my side of the City at least, but what was lovely was the sense of community - people pushing cars, and helping each other get home.... 4x4 drivers offering to help people get to or from work.... householders offering hot drinks and toilet stops for people who were having to walk home..... people all over facebook offering to take food (hot meals) to anyone who needed it, or go out to get prescriptions or get some food in for people. The sense of Community has been great. Smile
