The 2025 ‘Will it snow at Christmas?’ thread

As requested earlier in the week, it’s the annual, ‘Will it snow at Christmas?’ thread! So with 2 weeks to go, according to the GFS model it’s looking like this….

Monday, 22nd December ~ mild in the south but chilly in the north/Scotland. Chance of snow over the Scottish hills.
Tuesday, 23rd ~ for the south, temperatures about average for the time of year with (possibly) a band of rain passing through. Chilly again for the north/Scotland and still a chance of snow over high ground.
Christmas Eve ~ cold but fairly quiet ~ no storms brewing….
Christmas Day ~ for the south ~ temperatures about average for the time of year but with the chance of rain. For the north/Scotland ~ chilly with the possibility of snow over the hills.
Boxing Day ~ dry and settled. Temperatures in the south about average but in the north/Scotland ~ cold, temperatures struggling a bit.

And thoughts from…Netweather

And yesterday's long-range forecast from the metoffice….

Tuesday 16th, December – Thursday 25th December
Unsettled at first with spells of rain affecting the UK at times. Some heavy rain is possible anywhere, but it is likely to be heaviest and most persistent in the west and northwest, with sheltered parts of the east and southeast typically drier. Any snow will probably be confined to high ground in the north. Strong winds are possible at times with a risk of gales, especially along coasts and over higher ground. Temperatures are likely to be above normal overall. Later in the period, conditions may start to become a little more settled, with rainfall amounts decreasing and drier weather becoming more prevalent, especially in the south. This may mean an increasing amount of overnight fog and frost.

Friday 26th, December – Friday, 9th January
High pressure will probably become more influential across the UK during this period. This means an increasing incidence of dry weather compared to the winter so far, especially in the south. Spells of rain and strong winds remain possible, there most likely in the north. Snow will probably be confined to higher ground in the north. Temperatures are expected to be close to normal.

So to summarise.... it’s looking mild for the south and chilly for the north in the runup to Christmas but settling down from Christmas Day onwards, with temperatures close to normal and any snow that falls, will be over northern/Scottish hills…..

@leesmum @TokyoSushi @EmeraldRoulette Smile

At the moment, it's still looking like everything settles down in the week running up to Christmas Day ~ nothing showing up in the way of wet/stormy and temperatures are looking about average. For those that want it white, they're probably going to be disappointed ~ the only white might be provided by overnight frosts. There's nothing in the way of ❄❄except for maybe over Scottish hills.

So the latest is looking like this (the first few days for next week I've grouped together as the weather's looking similar....)

Monday 22nd - Wednesday, 24th December ~ Temperatures about average for the time of year. It's looking like there could be a mixture of overcast/showers/sunny spells at times for most areas...

Christmas Day ~ chilly, temperatures about average for the time of year during the day but overnight into Boxing Day, frosty and there might be the chance of snow showers just about anywhere...

Boxing Day ~ cold - temperatures struggling to get above freezing, further chance of snow showers. Another cold, frosty night going into Saturday...

Also checking in, hoping for a dry and settled Christmas period.

MuggyBonehead · 16/12/2025 07:41

I'm on the south coast and just hoping for a calm, non-windy Christmas so I can get in some sea swims / dips over the break. This year has been too stormy for me to get in as much as I would like.

leesmum · 16/12/2025 11:13

Thank you for the update @GloriaSmud a dusting of snow would be perfect for Christmas day 😁

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 16/12/2025 11:16

I'll settle for bright and frosty. To be honest I'll settle for anything right now that isn't grey and wet, I am so sick of rain!

GloriaSmud · 16/12/2025 18:23

@leesmum ~ wouldn't that be lovely - to wake up to something like that Christmas morning! It's looking quite marginal though at the moment so there might be the odd flake that falls but that's about it. In the latest GFS run (remembering that this is 2+ weeks away), the cold lasts into the following week so it could be a cold/frosty/possibly snowy start to 2026!

Keeping everything crossed for some snow here in Leicestershire! ❄️☃️

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 17/12/2025 22:45

No chance of snow here (south west) we will get grey and drizzle as usual

GloriaSmud · 18/12/2025 06:55

The temperatures are certainly moving in the right direction for the possibility of a few flakes, cheeseybeans19. From the overnight GFS run, I'd say that any snow that falls next week will be more of an 'over high ground' sort of thing but there could be a few flakes at lower levels. It still looks like the cold will last as we head towards/into the New Year so there's the possibility of a cold/frosty/snowy start to 2026!....❄

@GloriaSmud time to bring out a snow dance! 🙏🏻❄️☃️

GloriaSmud · 18/12/2025 13:46

@cheeseybeans19 ~ Grin yes indeed, cheeseybeans19. And maybe start polishing the sledge!

So after the GFS was hinting that there might be a chance of snow next week, it's now looking unlikely. But as it's still looking settled in the days after Christmas, that's not to say that we might get something as we head into the New Year though....
Today's thoughts from Netweather.

Snow unlikely for Christmas, but looking cold, dry, and staying settled into the New Year

Changeable for most over the weekend and into early next week, with more rain. However, it looks to turn drier, settled and colder in time for Christmas with similar conditions looking like to persist through to the New Year, with high pressure nearby.

Stv weather have snow for us on boxing day.
BBC weather and the Met office predict it'll be dry.
I'm living in hope stv are right, but I doubt it. ☹️

tapdancingmum · 20/12/2025 18:10

The BBC and my local weatherman have snow for us on Christmas day. Here's hoping ❄️

Delatron · 20/12/2025 18:11

Oh I’ve fallen off these weather threads somehow!. Then saw in the news that they were saying it would be cold for Christmas. Checked the (unreliable) BBC forecast which is now saying sleet and 2 degrees for Christmas Day 👀
