Couldn't see a thread about this.

BBC can't make up its mind, sometimes it's headline news, sometimes it isn't.

Due to hit Scotland, northern England, Wales and Northern Ireland tomorrow with winds up to 85mph!

Currently in North Wales on holiday. Hoping it blows through without much fuss.

BBC and met office differ a bit.

musicalfrog · 03/08/2025 07:43

If true, it's going to mess up quite a few holidays I feel. 😕

I live in Cumbria and keeping an eye on the news . We have quite a few trees that are in full leaf so are quite vulnerable and if the ones near the house came down or any of the bigger branches we'd know about it .
Also thinking of holidaying campers .

musicalfrog · 03/08/2025 08:18

Yes, the poor trees. And am I right in thinking they don't have very deep roots there as it's such rocky terrain?

Actual trees on the mountains / hills tend to be low growing knarly ones and sparce so usually get away with it .
My garden is not on bed rock so I should imagine the roots are as a normal tree .

musicalfrog · 03/08/2025 12:02

Thanks @Iclyn and good luck to your trees. 🤞

We're on our way back from a camping holiday in Northumberland. I'm glad we went last week rather than this week. I'm a bit worried for the campers and caravanners still there.

Justmuddlingalong · 03/08/2025 13:58

Just about to move pots, hanging baskets and garden furniture to more sheltered bits of the garden. We're right on the east coast of Fife so it's looking quite wild for tomorrow.
Going to hunt out the bin straps to secure the lids on the rubbish bins. Saves picking up the recycling if the bins blow over while I'm at work. Quite breezy here just now so will put out the washing when it's done.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 03/08/2025 15:07

The wind has noticeably started to pick up here on the NE coast of England. It's been so 'quiet' weather wise for the past few months, I feel a bit out of practice with stormy weather. Can't beleive the last named storm was January. Spring was very kind to us!

I also need to go out and move the pots.

Musicaltheatremum · 03/08/2025 16:46

I'm in Edinburgh. Due to fly to Jersey tomorrow for an easyJet holiday. My brother who is a flight ops engineer looked up the forecast for Edinburgh and thought the planes might just get in and out (27 knots at 1pm)
We can go somewhere later in the week if needs be as retired but can't bring myself to pack just now.

Central Scotland here so amber warning. DH has been told to wfh tomorrow. I’m off which I’m glad as I tend to hunker down when it’s really bad weather. Made sure to get the garden storm ready so nothing should fly away or get damaged. All bins are full (good old 4 week uplifts…) and very heavy so they’re not going anywhere!

will be checking this thread regularly. Please stay safe everyone!

BlackeyedSusan · 04/08/2025 01:27

It was calm with only a little breeze on and off up til 9pm here, sitting in the garden and on the beach. (Pembrokeshire)

Kiddo is in NWales in a caravan.

musicalfrog · 04/08/2025 05:14

Yes, please keep safe everyone. Hopefully it won't be as bad as they say it will be.

Rain has arrived with a flourish in Cumbria.

Justmuddlingalong · 04/08/2025 06:59

Rainy and dull here. Absolutely still, not a breeze yet. I have all the windows open for a bit because it's lovely and cool.

musicalfrog · 04/08/2025 07:05

Whereabouts are you roughly @Justmuddlingalong ?

Amber warning area? Or elsewhere?

Not sure whether to break it to you or not,.you may want to look away now...

The aviation forecasts, certainly those produced this AM, have the Edinburgh winds quite a lot stronger than that, generally 30 knots plus and at times after 1200 UTC (1 p.m UK) gusting to 50..

The good news is it's gusting rather than a steady wind which is meant to be almost in line with the runway, so you might get away OK but it'll be bumpy.

Good Luck.

Justmuddlingalong · 04/08/2025 07:14

Im in Fife, up a bit from Edinburgh on the map. We're on an Amber warning.

Do you have rain yet?

I guess there's a few hours still until amber kicks in.

OP posts:
Justmuddlingalong · 04/08/2025 07:28

Yes, it's been raining for a couple of hours. Not particularly heavy, but steady.

Iclyn · 04/08/2025 07:55

Cumbria here as well , raining and gusting , not terrible roof damaging yet but you wouldn't be wanting to walk the dog .

RainbowZebraWarrior · 04/08/2025 08:19

It will still feel like the calm before the storm for most at the moment, although Northern Irrland must be feeling it already.

First pic was Floris' position an hour or two ago and the second is the forecast position at Noon.

Stay safe all.

Supposed to be flying out of Liverpool this afternoon, so I'm watching with interest and a bit of intrepidation.

On current forecasts Liverpool is going to be decently windy but nowhere near as windy as places like Glasgow or Edinburgh..
