Amazing piece of weather history.

You can't imagine how cold it must have been. No central heating, still in rationing so limited coal for open fires. No duvets...blankets and jumpers might have been limited because of clothing coupons. Imagine trying to keep your children warm.
My father was in the army in 1947 and he told me about being tasked with clearing snow off train tracks. I couldn't believe it!

A late friend talked to me about the winter of 1947. He used to ride to work on a motorbike and said that where road signs had lights over them, there would be birds of all sorts clustered around the light for warmth. He told me he even saw raptors mixed in with blackbirds, all of them huddled together.

We watched it, with our dd aged 25. She was staggered by it, and the main thing she took away from it was that people gritted their teeth and coped in a way that would be well nigh impossible for people to tolerate today.

I'm so glad she watched it and came to that realisation as did I.
