Met Office have named the first storm of the season - named Agnes. The season runs from the 1st September to the end of August. Ironically we didn't have the first storm of the last season until August.

Warnings are out. Note the impact matrix and details. Some uncertainty of track and intensity, but given that it has been named, it has the potential to induce some amber warnings.

Good luck Biddy!
Some models develop a secondary low on Thursday, bringing the risk of a further spell of gales, but perhaps more south than the main low.

I've just checked BBC weather and can't find anything in the forecast for my area - East Sussex. Will it miss me?

I'm pondering whether to drive to work tomorrow. I work in a valley near Newquay surrounded by ancient woodland.

Looks like winds get worse at 4pm. And I leave at 5pm. I don't want huge diversions because branches are down etc

May as well wfh

That could be sensible Fistral given how in leaf all the trees are still.

UKV takes the worst of the wind and rain through Ireland, Northern Ireland, coastal northern Wales and through the western side of much of northern England and Scotland through into northern Scotland. There could be some enhanced wind gusts around the Pennines.

Conversely, in the south east, a blustery couple of days with a chance of showers.

GFS broadly agrees with UKV, but doesn't bring the high winds into northern Scotland.

Arperge shows the worst of it over Ireland, parts of western Wales and NW England.

In all scenarios, there are still gales in the Met Office warning area, but this gives an idea of where any amber warnings might be issued. Ireland of course has its own warnings. https://www.met.ie/warnings/tomorrow

Note that the Irish sea will be where there are severe gales. Definitely not boat weather!!

It still looks like the worst affected area will be around areas bordering the Irish sea.

This isn't a particularly severe storm in terms of wind speeds. What makes it an issue is mostly due to trees being in full leaf. Falling trees of course affect transport and power and aren't great if they fall on your head.

Having said the above, there is the potential for some very nasty gusts along the Irish sea - especially I think in Ireland tomorrow afternoon. So please don't be complacent!

In the course of today, Met Éireann has upgraded its warnings to orange for Kerry and Cork, and now Waterford as well, all on south coast.

Still yellow for Irish Sea area and much of the rest of Ireland.

Ryanair has warmed about potential flight disruptions but Aer Lingus is cheerfully optimistic at the minute. So I am crossing my fingers I get moving tomorrow and not the 6am flight on Thursday instead. (Aer Lingus out and Ryanair home on Friday!).

Lots of heavy downpours today but as short-lived showers. Distinctly chillier than the weekend but relatively calm - the literal calm before the storm! 😱

Status orange warning tomorrow has been extended up south and east coasts in Ireland as far as Wicklow in the last short while.

It looks like some parts of coastal Ireland will see gusts of up to around 70mph. Thankfully the sting jet that some models are showing should remain out at sea.

Still very calm (11 knots) in Dublin but starting to cloud over. Agnes has made landfall in Cork/Kerry since around 6am though...wind low 20s gusting mid 30s in knots, wave height rising to nearly 3 metres on offshore buoys (usually around 1m) and pressure dropping rapidly.

My local council ( Cumberland ) has just put up a yellow warning and suggesting garden furniture / trampolines etc are made safe. To also park cars away from trees or buildings and have torches / non cook food available .
Not to travel unless necessary , and the usual of caution if driving through flooded roads . To stay off the lakes and fells .
The warning for here is midday today until 7am tomorrow .
