Any weather watchers following this hurricane? I'm watching Fox Weather via Internet.

My brother is in Jacksonville on the northeast coast of Florida. They are in the tropical storm warning area, predicted wind gusts up to 49 mph. He moved all the garden furniture into the house yesterday, filled up the bathtub and some water bottles. He is expecting trees to come down and to lose power for at least a few hours. Fingers crossed for no trees falling on his house.

Here is the official update from the National Hurricane Center https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCPAT5+shtml/300858.shtml

She looks really nasty. I'm on rapid catch up after some time away.

The cnn worldwide coverage is very good. They are saying that in some areas the storm surge is not survivable.

SisterWedge · 30/08/2023 11:57

Where can you watch the cnn coverage @Ciri ?

Idalia is looking brutal. I'm in the Cayman Islands so had the tail bands of the storm over the weekend and of course we need to watch every tropical depression closely for our own protection.

It's more terrifying given how quickly Idalia spun up from just north of us. Very similar with Ian last year.

Generally you can see a depression develop into a hurricane and you have a decent amount of advance warning to prepare or evac (not that we can in Cayman, there's nowhere to go!) but with these western Caribbean storms popping up fast, there isn't a lot of time. And hurricanes are notoriously difficult to predict path certainty to a great degree, so you may end up evacuating into the path.

Mr Weatherman on YouTube is my daily go to, he covers the Caribbean mainly (most weather news is US focused), or Mikes Weather Page on Facebook. He's out tracking Idalia right now and has a livestream.

erm, I’m not sure, sorry. I have a Samsung tv and it’s the default channel when you turn on the tv. It’s cnn worldwide (and is generally excellent). Im assuming if you have sky or freeview or something similar you would get it in the news section

SisterWedge · 30/08/2023 16:21

Thanks @MrsSquirrel I couldnt find it on freeview so thats really useful, hows your bro?

My brother still has electricity! Thanks for asking. The storm did not come a far east as they were predicting, so things in Jacksonville are not too bad. Lots of rain and wind but not much flooding. Thankfully, he doesn't live near the river.

His neighbour's tree came down, but didn't land on anyone's house or car. Sounds like it will be a big mess, but not a disaster for them.

MrsSquirrel · 30/08/2023 17:01

I spoke too soon! My brother just lost power 😔

SisterWedge · 30/08/2023 22:11

Doh! Typical, hope normal service resumes soon

Hope everyone with family friends etc in hit areas are ok.
Disney parks / universal all fine. Windy and rainy but nothing major and nothing stronger wind wise than we experience at home on the south coast UK.
However Orlando wasn't in the eye of the storm, looks like much impact further north.
Tampa reopening airport today.
