That’s what I understood lighthouse. We’ve just started replacing our old patio so the dry weather is appreciated but I do feel sorry for the men in this hot weather. Keeping them well supplied with iced water!

BlackeyedSusan · 03/07/2018 17:35

1976....

quick, appoint a minister for drought...

halfwitpicker · 03/07/2018 17:38

Have to admit I drew a breath when I saw the forecast for Warrington.

SimonBridges · 03/07/2018 17:45

I’m sat on the sofa in my garden pictured up thread and it’s actually a little bit chilly.

I know.

Come and join me. Bring cake.

GloriaSmud · 03/07/2018 18:40

That's about it, Lighthouse. The blob of high pressure is stuck over us/close by and nothing (in the way of rain/low pressure systems that usually come from the west/SW) can get through at the moment.

Simon ~ I went out about an hour ago and had a and thought "coo, it's a bit chilly out here." I can bring cake and blanket/s (for keeping the knees/feet warm. I can't be doing with cold feet!)

LighthouseSouth · 03/07/2018 19:12

thanks Gloria

so can a blob of high pressure be replaced fairly quickly, I mean in theory, I realise it's not happening for ages. But it's got to happen at some point so I'm just wondering if a quick change might occur.

LighthouseSouth · 03/07/2018 19:14

@halfwitpicker

just looked that up, not the norm for the area I take it? It's basically the same forecast as London, though I'm guessing Warrington feels a bit more airy?

my mum said she can't remember anything this bad since 1976, she's nearly 80 and struggling in a very cool house. I'm thinking it's partly so bad because it started so early - at least in August the sun would be setting much earlier.

Delatron · 03/07/2018 19:16

I remember many a year where the jet stream got stuck in the wrong place!

halfwitpicker · 03/07/2018 19:22

Well put it this way Lighthouse the last time I was in Warrington the rain was so thick you could hardly see through it!

beenrumbled · 03/07/2018 19:24

Glorious sunshine in Manchester again, although it's hot it's not as hot as yesterday. It's lovely.

I have lived here nearly 20 years and can't remember such a long settled spell at this time of year. The last year like this I remember wad 1976.

Dogs Trust cancelled their Fun day locally at the weekend due to worries about the dogs in the heat.

GloriaSmud · 03/07/2018 20:06

Lighthouse ~ I think it's a combination of things. The High has to weaken and the the Jet Stream needs to power up and move over us/to the south of the UK so that Lows/rain systems (if there are any) come our way. I've just discovered this page (and been having some fun with it!), and you can see the Jet Stream positioned over Iceland at the moment. It means the high pressure/warm weather stays where it is (right over us) for the moment. Until 'something gives', we'll probably get the odd thunderstorm/rain shower that's moved up from France or is 'homegrown' but that's about it.

beenrumbled ~ probably a wise move by Dogs Trust there.

kooshbin · 03/07/2018 20:41

I've just looked at www.netweather.tv/charts-and-data/jetstream and that's predicting the jet stream shifting south by the 18th. I could cope with another fortnight until there's a break in the weather.

Though I don't actually know how anyone could predict what the jet stream is going to be up to, even in the near future.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/07/2018 22:36

Synoptically it does look like 1976, but we are in a better position with water supplies. So it looks unlikely that we will see hose pipe bans unlike in Ireland who are really struggling with supply.

TokyoSushi · 03/07/2018 22:40

Yes, I can confirm that it is excellent for Warrington! Grin

It really is odd. It's sunny and the Scottish schools are on holiday.

WhoKnowsWhereTheW1neGoes · 04/07/2018 10:19

We've got solid cloud, a fresh breeze and it's only 19C here today, what a nice change. I expect the sun will break through later, but it's nice while it lasts.

megletthesecond · 04/07/2018 16:19

It's trying to spit in North Hampshire. Not enough to bother with an umbrella though.

Heatherjayne1972 · 04/07/2018 16:29

Don’t worry folks the schools break up on 20th July
It’s bound to rain for the six weeks after that until September when the glorious sunshine will return
Yay ( not)

beenrumbled · 04/07/2018 19:43

Some clouds have drifted in this evening, but they don't mean business.

Sweltering again.

WhoKnowsWhereTheW1neGoes · 04/07/2018 21:37

Well, it stayed cloudy all day here, which made a nice change. Still too hot though.

GloriaSmud · 05/07/2018 09:55

Heatherjayne ~ our schools break up next Friday and we've booked to go on this the week after, when we're on holiday. This is guaranteed to put a stop to the nice weather!

Today's thoughts from netweather and TheWeatherOutlook. Not much change although there 's the chance of some thundery showers for the south.

GloriaSmud · 05/07/2018 09:57

Metoffice have issued a thunderstorm warning for the south/SE.

brizzledrizzle · 05/07/2018 18:05

Floods in Kent and near drought elsewhere - it's ridiculous.

Titsywoo · 05/07/2018 23:01

Well no thunderstorms here in East Surrey. Bit disappointing but then I find it gets more humid after them anyway so not necessarily a bad thing!

GloriaSmud · 06/07/2018 07:49

Uncomfortable night here (Leicester) ~ was still 22C around midnight.

And the heat carries on ~ TheWeatherOutlook.

And the metoffice Outlook ~ not much change there...

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:
Largely hot with sunny spells and light winds but temperatures gradually falling from the north into next week where it will be cloudier and breezier at times with patchy rain.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 10 Jul 2018 to Thursday 19 Jul 2018:
Tuesday will be very warm and sunny again in the west. It may be cloudier in the east but there will be warm sunny spells here too. Very warm sunny weather is likely to continue for the rest of the week, except perhaps in the far northwest, where it may be cloudier and breezy at times, with a little rain. It will become hot in central and southern areas, but stay closer to normal in the far northwest. The only significant winds will be a brisk easterly breeze in East Anglia and Kent and sea breezes developing all around the coast, keeping it less warm here. There is an increased chance of occasional rain, cloud or stronger winds for the following week, particularly in the north and northwest.

UK Outlook for Friday 20 Jul 2018 to Friday 3 Aug 2018:
For the last third of July, dry, sunny and warm weather will probably dominate across the bulk of UK, especially in the south. However, there are likely to be interludes of wetter and windier weather, when weather fronts arrive from the west and northwest, or when thundery showers spread from the south. Temperatures overall are likely to be above average, and there could be further very warm or hot spells. Temperatures will return nearer to average in any more changeable spells. There are very tentative signs that there may be more generally unsettled weather into the start of August.
