I wish you could have joint thread starters! Gloria and I will be hosting this years snow watch and tag teaming with amateur weather forecasts. When reading them, please bear in mind that we are both amateurs with busy day to day lives, but we will do our best.

Please remember snow is notoriously difficult to forecast in this country as it often falls under marginal conditions.
When a forecast matters please do check with the Met Office first.

After a taste of winter already for some in the east, this mornings GFS model sticks with the winter weather theme we’ve been noticing for a few days for late Thurs 7th onwards, with a significant low pressure looking to bring in some cold and potentially rather snowy weather. Indeed, there is the potential for this to be accompanied by some very strong winds.

At the moment GFS plays around with the exact location of this low pressure, so it is too early to say where any snow may hit, but most places away from the far west seem to be in the potential firing line at the moment.

If some of the charts come off, the weather could be quite disruptive next weekend.

Report here saying that tonight could be the coldest night of the year ~ temperatures could be below -13 for Scotland.

SinceWhenDid · 28/12/2017 19:04

Due to be -10 here tonight

GloriaSmud · 28/12/2017 21:08

BBC report here as well.
We're already down to -0.8 here (Leicester) Think we're too far south for any significant snow although it might start as something wintry before falling as rain later on.

Wouldn't mind waking up to some snow in Manchester, no one has to go out in the car or make any journeys tomorrow Xmas Grin

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 29/12/2017 01:14

Hi all!
Yes - Fort McMurray in Alberta. We’re not that much further north than Dublin but sat in the middle of the land mass that is Canada. Shows how effective the Gulf Stream is.

Cold weather still continues. Currently 6:15pm and -37 with the wind chill.

SinceWhenDid · 29/12/2017 09:04

We're much further north than you then, Moose, (near inverness ) but only a measly -11 here last night!

MotherofaSurvivor · 29/12/2017 09:33

3 inches and still falling in Harrogate Grin

leesmum · 29/12/2017 09:51

Manchester has SNOW ❄❄⛄" let's all do the conga, let's all do the conga" Xmas Smile

BarchesterFlowers · 29/12/2017 09:52

Nidderdale - tons - first of the year. I see it is going to be 9 degrees tomorrow Shock

notsomanky · 29/12/2017 09:57

Walked to work in Tameside on black ice and frozen hailstones, in torrential rain.

Within half an hour of arriving at work it had turned to heavy snow and we have an inch lying in the car park.

It's stopped now though so just waiting for it to turn to rain!

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 29/12/2017 14:18

And still it continues. 7:18am and -44 with the windchill.

OYBBK and Gloria, any thoughts on developments at the end of next week? I lurk on TWO but can't claim to understand much of what they say!

MissConductUS · 30/12/2017 21:32

We had about an inch of snow this morning, temps around -14C, in the Hudson Highlands area.

Sorry, not enough info above. I'm in the Hudson Valley region of New York, about 50 miles north of NYC. It's been record breaking cold here for almost a week.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/12/2017 23:10

I'm not sure yet fatsatsuma. I'll have another look tomorrow.

It seems pretty brutal there atm MissC.

It is pretty brutal BadKitten. This type of cold isn't unusual for the Hudson Valley, but we typically don't see it like this until late January or early February. I hope it's not like this all winter.

It's supposed to get colder next week, with Friday 5/1 having a high temp of -12 and a low of -19.

GloriaSmud · 01/01/2018 14:07

Scotland does quite well for cold/snow the rest of this week and over the weekend. Interesting precipitation-type chart here for the rest of the country for Saturday (although if it comes off, might be a bit marginal for some.)

From the BBC Weather Monthly Outlook, for w/c 8th January 2018: "As fronts try to push back across the UK from the Atlantic we may see some significant snowfall in some areas".

Some areas?? Any idea where, and how likely this is?? Have barely seen a flake in Surrey.

GloriaSmud · 02/01/2018 14:00

It's due to get colder over the weekend but at the moment it's probably too early to say for definite which areas might see snow. It's probably one to keep an eye on over the next few days.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/01/2018 17:12

I've been keeping a bit quiet about that CV over the past couple of days as there's a huge amount of uncertainty still and I didn't want to be the kitten that called wolf. There are some forecasters I have high regard for who are taking the synoptic situation pretty seriously. There is potential for the second half of January to be significantly snowy in places.

CointreauVersial · 02/01/2018 17:17

SIGNIFICANTLY snowy, eh? Don't worry, your secret is safe with me.

Will check in later in the week when you know more!

SnowFairyDust · 02/01/2018 17:26

❄️👍🏻🙏🏻

Ilikesweetpeas · 02/01/2018 17:45

North west here (lancs) hasn't had any snow yet (stamps foot!). Met office seems to be suggesting some in a couple of weeks time however I'm not sure how accurate that is so far in advance? Any thoughts OYBK?
