Snow watch 2017/18

I wish you could have joint thread starters! Gloria and I will be hosting this years snow watch and tag teaming with amateur weather forecasts. When reading them, please bear in mind that we are both amateurs with busy day to day lives, but we will do our best.

Please remember snow is notoriously difficult to forecast in this country as it often falls under marginal conditions.
When a forecast matters please do check with the Met Office first.

After a taste of winter already for some in the east, this mornings GFS model sticks with the winter weather theme we’ve been noticing for a few days for late Thurs 7th onwards, with a significant low pressure looking to bring in some cold and potentially rather snowy weather. Indeed, there is the potential for this to be accompanied by some very strong winds.

At the moment GFS plays around with the exact location of this low pressure, so it is too early to say where any snow may hit, but most places away from the far west seem to be in the potential firing line at the moment.

If some of the charts come off, the weather could be quite disruptive next weekend.

whojamaflip, you are a star.

hoochymama1 · 10/12/2017 18:03

Good job whojamaflip ThanksBet your shattered. Just started snowing again here. Fine snow 'eira man eira mawr' like we say in Wales, when the snowflakes are small there's usually a lot of it Xmas Smile Keep safe everyone.

ArgyMargy · 10/12/2017 18:04

Thanks Kitten - you're right of course; I just want someone to tell me to stay home!! Xmas Grin

ArgyMargy · 10/12/2017 18:04

And thank you from me too, whojamaflip!

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 10/12/2017 18:44

Yay, school are shut tomorrow! Think I'm more pleased than the dc. Still snowing lightly here & meant to be heavier for a few hours again later.

Dh is out in the field for the first time tomorrow (new job) & he's not looking forward to it as he's not used to his new van yet Sad.

Stay safe those of you that have to go out tomorrow.

GloriaSmud · 10/12/2017 19:22

whojamaflip A 'well done' from me as well and sending a warming Brew to you both.

Our snow hasn't stopped today and in the last few hours, they've updated the forecast to say we're due for more heavy stuff overnight. DDs 2 and 3 are off tomorrow ~ school have let us know they're closed early this time rather than the 9pm I was expecting, like last time.

Unfortunately for us, while I usually love snow, it's put a real 'spanner in the works' for us as tomorrow is my FIL's funeral. Along with my parents, we were all set to go but we've decided for safety's sake after the latest weather forecast, that DH will go by himself and set off early.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/12/2017 19:26

Gloria, that’s sad, it does show the flip side, what’s fun for us, is awful for others. I’m sorry about your FIL.

No thanks needed - we are just 2 of many many farmers up and down the country which do the same every time there's a problem be it due to flood, snow or anything else.

Does anyone know if those drivers who were stuck on the M40 earlier due to the snow have been rescued?

whojamaflip · 10/12/2017 19:34

So sorry for your loss Gloria and sorry you are missing the funeral Sad

Hope your dh stays safe tomorrow.

GloriaSmud · 10/12/2017 19:37

Thank you OYBBK. I shall send DH fully equipped for the journey and maybe raise an early Wine or Brew at 11.45 tomorrow.

GloriaSmud · 10/12/2017 19:38

And thank you to you as well, whojamaflip. Hope you're warmed through now!

Janetsadick · 10/12/2017 19:38

Anymore snow for Essex at all

VioletCharlotte · 10/12/2017 20:08

I'm in Hampshire, we've had no snow at all yet, but heavy snow forecast for tomorrow. I really hope it does!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/12/2017 20:16

maybe some tomorrow Janet, depending on how close to the coast you are.

Any hope for us in the next week or so Kitten?

gttia · 10/12/2017 20:24

It's stopped here in se London. We managed to go ice skating as planned.
Is there anymore for this area do we think? I am checking met office every half hour!!

Ilikesweetpeas · 10/12/2017 20:36

Gloria - sorry to hear about your FIL, and that you are missing his funeral. I hope your DH has a trouble free journey

After my disappointment today (BBC said heavy snow and we had none) which weather forecast do you all find most reliable? Clearly not the BBC...

TheWoollybacksWife · 10/12/2017 20:44

@GloriaSmud I'm sorry for your loss Thanks

Do you know what is Leicester city centre like? DD2 has to walk from the station to DMU tomorrow. Is it icy?

perhapstomorrow · 10/12/2017 21:02

OYBBK - I am travelling from South London/Surrey border to North London (via M25) then onto Buckinghamshire for my cousin's funeral tomorrow morning. Do you think the snow will be an issue for me? I don't know how much they've had today (we've had a tiny bit) and if there is still heavy snow on the cards for tomorrow.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/12/2017 21:12

manky - I don’t think so.

gttia - maybe some sleet and a bit of snow.

sweetpeas - none of them got it right yesterday, the models showed the low developing further north than it did. It was only when it began developing was it evident that it was developing further south. Unfortunately the BBC seem to be quite slow in updating.

perhaps - I think main roads will be clear, in Buckinghamshire perhaps minor ones will be messy. Be careful if travelling home late, it will be icy on untreated surfaces.

Wollyback - you could see if there are any webcams.

Oybbk - thank you. Your input to this thread is much appreciated

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/12/2017 21:42

you’re welcome gttia, I don’t always get the time to do so now, so it’s nice when I do. Just bear in mind, I do get things wrong sometimes.

Bucks got a decent (for us!) amount today, most places had 10cm or so. Some thawing but still loads around and temps are low overnight.

Main roads in South Bucks are open and clear after clearing today but very icy. Smaller roads are very variable - leave plenty of time!

Sorry for your loss perhaps

Janetsadick · 10/12/2017 21:52

Ah thanks kitten, it’s snowing again now!

SuffolkNWhat · 10/12/2017 21:54

Any more for West Suffolk? I’m expecting the stuff we do have will freeze overnight (oh joy)
