Bad winter predictions?

Hi all,

I missed it last night but DH said that there was a prediction from the UK Met Office that it would be a bad winter this year, as in a lot of heavy rain and flooding.

Does anyone know anything about that, and if it's likely to be accurate?

I know in general we can't predict (DH said something about a "supercomputer making it better") so far ahead, but maybe there have been real improvements. Do I start to lay in supplies of wellingtons and waterproofs?

(And is it going to be as bad on the Irish side of the Irish Sea?!)

That's not quite what they've said, they've said that there is a 1 in 3 chance now of winters having exceptional record breaking rainfall over the next decade.

I knew it sounded wrong, but DH was adamant (and I was too tired to fight it).

Sounds much more like something I can deal with! 😀

That would make living on a flood plain extra scary. You can start to imagine the upcoming winter news headlines unfortunately, if this happens.

It's going to make getting affordable insurance even more challenging.

What are they saying it's down to OYBBK. Global warming, or something else? Sounds a short term phenomenon if just for a decade.

I suspect that's as far as the computer model runs.

Climate change is reported to be a factor.

Seems that it's 50/50 on predictions for winter. Some are saying colder than average others are saying milder and wetter.
