The moon hasn't been this close since 1948 and there's a little wait until it's this close again - November 2034!
More info here and here (scroll down a bit for info.) Let's hope for clear skies for viewing and photo opportunities!

I hope the skies are clear! I shall be in Cornwall that night.

magimedi · 12/11/2016 11:21

And it is bringing some very high tides with it.

This article is also a good explanation - 8.09pm GMT is the time to get out & watch.

Thanks, magi. I shall definitely be watching.

GloriaSmud · 12/11/2016 15:38

Excellent link there, magi. Explains it all really well.

Nice BBC report here.
Going by the forecast, it looks like it might be too overcast for us to see anything Sad

Can't see anything here tonight:(

originalmavis · 14/11/2016 17:45

According to the bod on radio 4 this morning, it won't be up to much really. Even though the presenter was trying to get them to say it would be spectacular, the astronomer (I think) wouldn't be drawn to say much! Apparently there was a similar one not that long ago.

What a bust!

GloriaSmud · 14/11/2016 18:44

Well I've just seen it behind the clouds and...... it looks just the same as other full-moons

Too cloudy here, better last night.

Littlelostdinosaur · 14/11/2016 18:45

Too cloudy here! I think it's most impressive when you see it close to the skyline so once it's risen it may not look much different. Just brighter Smile

DomesticAnarchist · 14/11/2016 18:46

If you could see it, it would look like any other full moon.

If you were to photograph it at some precise point and then compare with another photograph when it's at its furthest point (or median) you'd be able to measure the diameter and see that it's a teeny bit bigger today. But it's not going to look any different to the eye. Sorry.

It's just the moon. Looking moony. Next time you can see the moon, whatever size it is, have a look through binoculars or a telescope. That'll blow your mind whatever distance it's at.

DomesticAnarchist · 14/11/2016 18:48

The skyline/horizon effect works with any full moon too. And photographic tricks make it seem more dramatic (not photoshopping, just perspectives and clever use of zoom)

DomesticAnarchist · 14/11/2016 18:48

[bonfire]

Hulababy · 14/11/2016 18:52

Looks too cloudy so far; hoping it might clear a little later on to get a chance to see it.

Have seen other super moons where it has looked spectacular so fingers crossed.

Soubriquet · 14/11/2016 18:55

Too cloudy here too though the clouds in front of it are really bright

originalmavis · 14/11/2016 18:56

It definitely didn't live up to its name. A bit of a disappointment really!

BlackeyedSusan · 14/11/2016 20:04

too feckin cloudy

BlackeyedSusan · 14/11/2016 20:05

it did look larger than normal last week after school when it was still a gibbous moon.

Katsite · 14/11/2016 20:07

We had a bigger looking full moon a month or two ago. Disappointed!

Was cloudy ti late yesterday so didn't see the moon tis about 11pm - it was very bright but didn't seem any larger than normal.

However, came home at 6pm this evening and the moon was definitely looking very impressive - much larger than normal.
