telescopes for beginners?

I would like to get 8yo DS a telescope for Xmas, can only really afford around the £70/£80 mark. We have a Jessops in town and that's it.

Where do I start, what knobs and twiddly bits does it need? Can they all see the rings on Saturn on a good night?

meglet did you get any replies elsewhere on mumsnet? i just googled as I have the exact same question except for I have a 5 yo - he def wants a telescope and not binoculars. Would be so grateful if you PM me if you have any joy! We live in sticks but could order via Amazon.

I'll come back tomorrow :) my knowledge on it may be outdated though.
