and it's a big 'un!
This time at Bárðarbunga, with over 200 earthquakes recorded so far and last night, the Icelandic Met Office raised the aviation colour code to yellow to reflect the unrest that's going on.

Still keeping an eye on this. Latest update from JonFr's blog here saying how bad the SO2 pollution is getting.

Some amazing footage of the erupting fissure taken using a drone aircraft and (which I think is just as amazing!)

Still checking here as well. This must be causing a lot of hassle now.

BlotOnTheLandscape · 04/10/2014 15:11

Looking at the 2nd webcam, there seems to be more going on than there was yesterday - is it now erupting from a new place or actually from the caldera?

GloriaSmud · 04/10/2014 18:20

Can't see much on the webcams ~ Bardarbunga1 looks like it's clearing a bit so might be able to see something soon. Volcanocafe say that it's a new vent that's opened.

I forgot to look on Volcano Cafe! Shortly after I was watching the webcam a snow storm seemed to come in.

GloriaSmud · 05/10/2014 21:52

Quite a lot of 3+ earthquakes overnight and today ~ the area seems to have had a busy weekend, rocking and rolling about!

Article about the eruption on Icelandreview.

Reports from Iceland Review here. Looks like SO2 pollution is quite bad in Reykjavík at the moment.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/10/2014 14:33

ugh.

It just keeps on rumbling away doesnt it.

GloriaSmud · 12/10/2014 21:30

Another report with some nice pictures here.

Seems to have been quite a lot of earthquake activity in the last few hours but haven't been able to see anything on the webcams because of the weather!

Have to admit I've rather been relying on you to flag up anything interesting happening! Don't know where to put my attention at present!

GloriaSmud · 13/10/2014 14:06

Yep, still keeping an eye on things (we've got 1/2 term coming up though so Mr/Mrs Bárðarbunga better not think of doing anything when I'm relying on my phone and a not so great internet connection in deepest, darkest Devon next week!) It looks like the IMO have got their GPS measuring on the volcano back working ~ think there's been a power cut the last few days so nothing's been registering.

Latest update on Jon Fr's blog. He still thinks that small eruptions are going on under the glacier.

GloriaSmud · 15/10/2014 08:04

And looks like SO2 pollution has been a problem again in Reykjavik.

Looks like the nearby volcano ~ Tungafellsjökull has been having a bit of a rocking and rolling session today as well. Will be interesting to see what happens to that one.

GloriaSmud · 17/10/2014 20:07

Latest reports and pictures here and here. It looks like the first acid rain is expected as well.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/10/2014 07:26

I read some remarkable statistics about how much output this eruption is giving off still. I'll have to try and find the link.

mankyscotslass · 18/10/2014 08:43

Are there any views on if/when the levels of gas being produced will affect the weather on a larger scale?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/10/2014 22:45

I think at the moment it won't as the eruption isn't going high enough. It's not nice for Iceland, but it's not going to affect global temps.

GloriaSmud · 24/10/2014 08:05

(Still keeping an eye on this) Noticed yesterday the high number of 3+ earthquakes that have taken place over the last few days. JonFr's update (can't do Linky thing as on phone) mentions that something might happen in the volcano caldera in the next few days.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/10/2014 08:12

Good that its half term coming up then :) Bit more time to do some volcano watching!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/10/2014 09:54

Apparently this eruption is now the largest effusive eruption in Iceland since Laki in 1783.

GloriaSmud · 26/10/2014 20:50

Our half term was last week, so back to the school run tomorrow and won't be able to spend most of the day as much time as I'd like watching the webcams. There's a good clear view of it though on bardarbunga-2 tonight.

Some updates on it all on RUV, mbl and latest reports on Iceland Review ~ am Shock at the size of the area that the lava now covers.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/10/2014 22:19

It's incredible isn't it and Iceland are quietly getting on with it.

BlotOnTheLandscape · 28/10/2014 05:49

Still lots going on:

GloriaSmud · 28/10/2014 06:18

There certainly is. JonFr's blog has a link to here which has some pictures of the cauldrons/volcano (or boilers, teapots and cooking pots that Google translate comes up with!)
