Another in Taunton. Its still raining, windy generally horrid. Some schools are shut through staff unable to get through the floods. Trees have come down along with at least one power line. Its grim in the SW at the moment Sad
Matey fingers are crossed for you, I assume your somewhere near the weir.

Quitequiet, certainly possible but similar temps occurred in the Highland Glens in winter 2009/2010. Im afraid I dont like to attempt to get into specific forecasts in advance like that as I'd just be making it up!

chub, if its an old house it is likely to have survived worse, though I bet it sounds really scary.

RustyBear They're advising people not to travel as the line's flooded and IIRC they couldn't get enough coaches to transfer people. Maybe National Express will be running? Sorry to hear about your dad Sad

The wind is so strong in North Hampshire. I'm half expecting something to come crashing down in my garden.

There is rain coming through my back door Hmm not enough to worry me but I've out a towel down to soak it up. My wheelie bin is blowing around the front garden (the green empty one luckily, I don't fancy having to go out and round up all ds' dirty nappies from the blue one) and its pitch black, tried using the light on my phone to see how deep the water is out the back but no use. I live in a hollow though so in a dip which is probably why the water is collecting in my garden.

In central Norfolk and it is bloody windy and miserable outdoors. Have just instructed DH to get a taxi home rather than cycle

I'm central southern England! The wind will probably get worse as the heavy rain arrives I think. There has been some lightning in Dumfries and Galloway - caused a powercut but I dont know whether there will be more I'm afraid - there doesnt seem to be any on live storm data

Bit concerned about Saturday nights low - some of the models are really developing it now. Look at the ttp://www.weatheronline.co.uk/cgi-bin/expertcharts?LANG=en&MENU=0000000000&CONT=ukuk&MODELL=nae&MODELLTYP=1&BASE=-&VAR=pslv&HH=48&ZOOM=0&ARCHIV=0&RES=0&WMO=&PERIOD= NAE Unsure as to whether to start a new thread....

Will wait until tomorrow I think and see how things pan out as the models are rather varying in their development.

I'm in cumbria and we've had loads of road closures cos of really bad flooding, took my partner 4 hours to do a 20 min journey to work this afternoon. We live on an island as well so the wind is horrendous.

dinosaurs - on the surface pressure chart think of those contours you can see a bit like height contours on a map - the closer they are, the more rapid the change. The contours are pressure (joining areas of equal pressure with lines) and you can see that its quite a deep storm at 988 (and I think still developing, but I could be wrong).

Where you have lots of contours close together that means its going to be very windy - wind moves from high pressure to low pressure. Because of spin the wind ends up going around a low pressure anticlockwise (and also towards the centre). (which means that you can tell where you are relative to a low pressure by the given direction of the wind, but thats not for now!)

on the precipitation charts you can see that this also could be a good rainmaker - its a pity the charts dont go beyond 48 hours! (that was a good gust of wind up to 30mph again!)

dont bother with all the other bits, they get rather complicated!

Can anyone tell me if this has anything to do with Superstorm Sandy?

That may be a daft question, sorry!

Dry and quiet here at the moment (West Kent) I assume it'll arrive overnight

Report
OhYoubadbadKitten · 22/11/2012 19:50

tricksy - not a daft question but no it's not. Its an active cold front being driven by a deep low to the NW. You can see it here on the surface pressure charts.

eatyourveg - I think around midnight for you.

Thank you. I'm impressed that you can understand all the data, it makes no sense at all to me. Do you do this as a job? You should!
