Yes OYBBK soggy Father Christmas on his sleigh with an umbrella isn't really the same. Sad

OhYoubadbadKitten · 24/11/2012 18:50

A flood free day so far for us, apparently it's going to get bad in the early hours so who knows!!

We have now been flooded 3 times in the last couple of months, to be honest if it floods again tonight it can make no difference!! The anticipation of it happening the first time was the worst bit!

There was some discussion about floodboard defences earlier up the thread. We had these, provided by the EA, and they were an utter waste of time. The water just came round the sides and underneath. Second time we flooded the water breeched them again, but this time it was coming up through the floor as the water table was so high anyway. There were over 30 properties near us which flooded, all of which had the supposed floodboard protection. What really stunk was the letter we received from the EA about a week after the first flood saying that they had every confidence in the boards and that where they failed it was due to poor maintenance or having been improperly fitted. They completely ignored the fact that they failed for absolutely everybody!!! It still makes me so cross, an admission that they didn't work and plan of action would have been so much better to hear. We now feel that even the EA aren't here to help!

Ok so rant over! Someone also asked earlier about where we are now- well we are warm and cosy in a holiday chalet. It's not perfect and it's certainly not home but we have everything we need and are safe.

To all those worrying about themselves and property tonight (and over the next few days :-( ) I hope all will be well, please keep safe. One poor man was killed in our village, which puts all else into perspective.

Wet on south Devon but not very windy yet, is it going to miss us?

OhYoubadbadKitten · 24/11/2012 20:00

That's very sad DrMelons :( awful too that the EA refuse to accept that their so called help was no help at all.

Saintlyjimjams, it will get pretty blowy later on tonight.

An awful lot of rain on the radar for the SW and Wales showing for the next few hours.

OP posts:
alcibiades · 24/11/2012 20:22

DrMelons, you really have had a bad time lately. But it does illustrate that although we rarely get very severe weather, we do get repeats of severe weather systems that often just hit the same places over and over again.

It's good that you're somewhere safe and warm, but the attitude of the EA isn't at all helpful. I wonder what the insurance companies will say about that.

OhYoubadbadKitten · 24/11/2012 20:24

You can see the 3 day flood risk map here only issue is, I don't speak Welsh!!!

OP posts:
alcibiades · 24/11/2012 20:32

Via Google Translate:

"The continuous heavy rain, which is ready for much of Wales, southern and central England, will continue to move northeast overnight and into Sunday morning, but cleared of north-east England later morning Sunday. Very strong winds are expected to accompany the rain, and can increase the risk of flooding. Another area expected to spread heavy rain across Wales and western and northern England later on Sunday and during Monday. With heavy rain falling on saturated ground, and river levels continue to be high, there will be further disruption is likely. A significant impairment, as further interventions to travel and flooding affecting property and parts of communities, are possible in each county shaded yellow on the map below. A MEDIUM risk of flooding in the counties shaded amber and LOW risk of flooding in the counties highlighted in yellow."

OhYoubadbadKitten · 24/11/2012 20:39

Thank you alci :)
I wonder how their coloured in counties is decided because I know for a fact there are rivers in some of the green counties that are on flood alert.

OP posts:
alcibiades · 24/11/2012 20:51

I have no idea, Kitten. But I wonder if there's a difference between rivers that are on high alert but have a means of safely transferring the extra water, and rivers where there's nowhere for the water to go. The river local to me is the Itchen, and although the river is running high and there might be some localised flooding in a few areas, most of the increase should just end up in the Itchen Navigation and thereon into the Solent.

OhYoubadbadKitten · 24/11/2012 21:02

Perhaps..... Would be nice if they would make it clear.

saintlyjimjams · 24/11/2012 21:13

Oh we have musical drips in both front bedrooms now (and a lot of buckets - new roof can't come fast enough.... )

OhYoubadbadKitten · 24/11/2012 21:59

How is Eastbourne way looking OYBBK? Have a holiday home nearby and will check in with neighbours in the morning if it looks bad.

Wind picking up a bit here in south devon as well. We face out to sea - can see it from the window although about a mile away (we're on a hill) - so we tend to feel the wind as it picks up.

Cornwall looks dreadful.

I went to our local 'lights and carols' this afternoon - I took my umbrella, I should have taken a row boat Grin

Sorry to hear about those of you who have been affected by the downpours & of course, very sorry to hear about the man who died :(

My friend has hardly slept and has worried endlessly since this bout of rain started. They were flooded a few years ago and their insurance has sky rocketed, she fears that if they flood again they wont be able to sell their house or afford the insurance premiums :(

drmelons - I hope you get back into your home soon.

Chanatan · 24/11/2012 22:22

Just posted on the other thread,we are now cut off, only access road is impassable by car or our medium size 4wd,and ds has to be at work at 7 am tomorrow so hopefully bil,s landrover will get through,if not he has a 4 mile walk.

OhYoubadbadKitten · 24/11/2012 22:23

Eastbourne looks pretty windy but cos the wind is coming from the SW it looks to be sheltered from the worst of it.

OP posts:
OhYoubadbadKitten · 24/11/2012 22:24

Crumbs chanatan I don't envy your ds. Is there a safe route through for him walking?

OhYouBadBadKitten, thanks for your concern ,yes there is a safe way,we live near a dual carraigeway,if he uses the footbridge over that,he is on pavements all the way but it will be a slog for him,the perils of living semi rural, however we have borrowed the landrover off bil tonight(he has a farm next door),he reckons that should go through unless the water is deep enough to come over the exhaust pipe,so here,s hoping.

OhYoubadbadKitten · 24/11/2012 22:31

Blimey rumbaa, do we need to send in an mn rescue team to you?
