Looking potentially very serious indeed for the eastern seaboard of the US, perhaps including NYC if some models are correct. The storm will probably be extra tropical but nevertheless if it interacts with a trough modelled off the east coast that could bring down arctic air then the result could be approaching catastrophic, with utterly torrential rain, severe blizzards, hurricane force winds and severe storm surges all being possible.

I think people will be getting very worried about this. Mon tues weds are the days to be watching. Lets hope the storm turns east away from the us coast.

41st St is Midtown - prime safe touristy area. That is where the vast majority of British tourists will be, I reckon. He will probably just hear a lot of wind and possibly have power cuts.

MrsJamin · 29/10/2012 12:05

41st is midtown, so he will be fine there. We are in the east village, 7th street, 2nd ave. DH says that the hurricane should hit south of NYC more than the city.

mumblechum1 · 29/10/2012 12:06

Great, thanks for reassurance.

SoggyMoggy · 29/10/2012 12:07

Yep, it's heading more for Delaware last they updated the trajectory on CNN.

ScarePhyllis · 29/10/2012 12:07

Yeah I think it's New Jersey and anywhere inland that is a flood plain that are going to get it bad.

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 12:08

Phyllis - well remembered about the storm windows Grin

MrsJamin, you sound well set up :) tea is absolutely the way forward!

Spamm, good that they are doing stuff to keep the kids busy, are you going to let him go?

My DH is near Baltimore, flew in yesterday morning. He seems pretty relaxed but I'm fairly nervous!

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 12:12

Sandy has now turned NW right on track.

OP posts:
ScarePhyllis · 29/10/2012 12:15

Baltimore may well be significantly safer than usual because nobody will be going outside!

SoggyMoggy · 29/10/2012 12:19

Hah! Too true, ScarePhyllis. As long as he's not in Inner Harbor, Balmur's probably fairly safe. Again, the power outages are the thing, there.

blackcurrants · 29/10/2012 12:34

Well it's 8:30am and central NJ is a howling Gale, lying rain, and generally foul.weather. DH had to drag the dog out, she didn't fancy walking at all! We still have power and I'm doing excellent parenting by letting DS watch heaps of bloody Barney educational programming, thereby saving all the books, puzzles, trains etc for when we really need them!

In the time it's taken me to type this, it's got noticably nastier out there. I was toying with.taking DS for a wet walk but I am worried about flying branches, plus the rain has increased. the biggest difference is that when I went to bed most trees had about half their leaves still on, now they're all bare.

kingbeat23 · 29/10/2012 12:40

Found a link to evacuation areas in NYC but can't work out how to paste a link in here (am on iPhone!) it's on WNYC website or put in evacuation areas NYC into google and it should come up.

My DB is in BedStuy and its not an evacuation area but has a shelter. Even so, haven't heard from him so am slightly worried :(

abitcoldupnorth · 29/10/2012 12:43

Sounds like you need to stay put and watch lots of Barney, blackcurrants. Flying branches are def. dangerous, as I know from a pretty average gale here a few weeks ago.

Hope you hear from your DB soon kingbeat

wishiwasonholiday · 29/10/2012 12:46

Kingbest I think you put link

wishiwasonholiday · 29/10/2012 12:46

Kingbeat sorry iPhone autocorrect!

SoggyMoggy · 29/10/2012 12:50

A lot of folks are sleeping in, kingbeat, given the day off. Maybe your DBs doing that? It's not quite 9am yet. The worst of the storm is supposed to be at midnightish.

clam · 29/10/2012 12:51

I had saved a webcam on the Statue of Liberty in my favourites to see how it was all looking from up there. Needless to say, it's out of action!

mumblechum1 · 29/10/2012 12:54

DSs school have finally just sent an email to all parents to say that they're staying put in their Washington hotel until it's safe to move on to NYC. [hsmile]

blackcurrants · 29/10/2012 12:55

Yep - most people are treating it like a bank holiday monday, given that going outside is unadvisable, nearly everyone is reading the papers on their smartphone in bed, I'll bet!

winnybella · 29/10/2012 12:57

Pressure in the eye 946 mb Shock
Water already rising close to Irene levels in NYC and storm still over 250 miles out to sea.

mankyscotslass · 29/10/2012 12:58

clam, try loading again, I just got through on it. The NC webcam at the beach is down again though.

clam · 29/10/2012 13:11

Ah, OK, it's back up. Bit wobbly though! Those gusts are catching it. All looks pretty miserable and the hurricane hasn't even arrived yet.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 29/10/2012 13:12

Stay safe Phyllis, blackcurrants and all other MNers and family.

SoggyMoggy · 29/10/2012 13:26

Update from my BiL's windowsill in Bear, Delaware. The squeaky duck has escaped Captain Jack Harkness (Weather Channel) and Father Christmas (Now working for CNN) and was last seen being swept away in the wake of a giant cocker spaniel that our meteorologists completely failed to predict. Clearly a fault in our modeling data, there. Sandy the oscillating fan has been switched on to medium, but our staunch weather reporters seem unimpressed so far. No floodwaters are in sight, but a casserole dish full of sand has appeared, so there's no telling what the future holds.

And yes, Thanksgiving dinner with my in laws is very, very weird. How did you guess?

TheCatInTheHairnet · 29/10/2012 13:29

Blackcurrants, I just took the dog for a walk while I still could. Hadn't really thought how the wind would be for a 10lb dog! Poor little man ran all the way home!!

MrsJamin, US news LOVE this kind of stuff. They get very dramatic at any weather. If you really are very scared, keep the tv off!
