Hurricane sandy

Looking potentially very serious indeed for the eastern seaboard of the US, perhaps including NYC if some models are correct. The storm will probably be extra tropical but nevertheless if it interacts with a trough modelled off the east coast that could bring down arctic air then the result could be approaching catastrophic, with utterly torrential rain, severe blizzards, hurricane force winds and severe storm surges all being possible.

I think people will be getting very worried about this. Mon tues weds are the days to be watching. Lets hope the storm turns east away from the us coast.

MrsJAmin
by the sound of it you live between 14th and 23rd too!

ElaineBenes · 31/10/2012 19:34

It's going to take AGES going from Manhattan to Queens. We're in QUeens and I know it took people 3-4 hours!! The tunnels are closed, there's no subway so traffic is bumper to bumper across the bridges

MrsJamin · 31/10/2012 19:35

We're staying on 7th.

TalkinPeace2 · 31/10/2012 19:43

Funny how you don't notice the hill to midtown till you have to walk up it :-)
good luck on getting your flights

there are lots of comments on the NYT website that cars with less than 4 people in should be barred from the bridges !

OhYouBigBadBeast · 31/10/2012 20:49

MrsJamin great to see you back on here :) it sounds rough and exhausting but I'm glad that fundamentally you are ok. Was it as bad as you feared?

Really really interesting blog by Jeff Masters discussing the unusual path that sandy took. Includes interesting speculation about the possible link with the record low sea ice.

Only problem with that blog, he appears to have forgotten about Irene last August.

TheCatInTheHairnet · 01/11/2012 02:00

I'm going to be honest, it's shit here. Earliest estimate of power back on..10 days. Endless beautiful streets looking like war zones. Huge 100+ year old trees just ripped up by their roots. Only one working petrol station in quite a large radius.

And we got lucky.

PrincessSymbian · 01/11/2012 02:01

Where are you cat?

helpyourself · 01/11/2012 02:25

We're still here![hgrin]
We've been so lucky; on upper Manhattan, but no power outages, and although we had 2 shut days, we're now stranded here until Sunday! Originally due to fly back yesterday -such a lot of extra holiday!
We went out to see friends off Manhattan for Halloween, no power, schools shut, trees down everywhere.

TheCatInTheHairnet · 01/11/2012 02:49

Princess, Nj. But not on the coast. Which is why we're lucky!

PrincessSymbian · 01/11/2012 07:31

Which bit of NJ? I have some family holed up in Hunterdon county with no power etc.
Luckily this time they have a generator, unlike during Irene and the water is still working.

OhYouBigBadBeast · 01/11/2012 09:39

Glad you came through it ok helpyourself! :)

Cat, that sounds really rubbish. Any signs of help from outside agencies?

Jeff Masters has covered hurricane Irene extensively in his other blogs the one I've linked to in this post talks about the impact it had and touches a little on its path and theorises on the impact that climate change may have on the path of hurricanes, without coming to any real conclusion.

Hurricane Irene's path was somewhat different as you know, instead of suddenly hooking left, she grazed the us coast before gradually turning right.

Cool video talkin, I love the way the clouds suddenly change direction.

I know I am being terribly pedantic but in that article discussing Sandy's path and the why's and wherefores, he days that the only other hurricane to have hit NJ Was the 1903 Vagabond hurricane. But no mention of Irene!
Which is probably just an oversight but it grated on me slightly.

PrincessSymbian · 01/11/2012 10:22

He says!

OhYoubadbadKitten · 01/11/2012 10:23

That is rather a big oversight!

alcibiades · 01/11/2012 11:36

There are some pictures here: www.theatlantic.com/infocus/2012/10/hurricane-sandy-after-landfall/100396/ that I haven't seen before.

OhYoubadbadKitten · 01/11/2012 17:17

Some of those have made me fight back tears, they show the reality of the suffering that the storm brought.

TalkinPeace2 · 01/11/2012 17:20

its ongoing.
cross your fingers that the weather does not turn cold as millions are without heat and light

OhYoubadbadKitten · 01/11/2012 18:49

A very sobering read talkin.

TalkinPeace2 · 01/11/2012 18:53

still waiting to hear if my Dad is OK .....

OhYoubadbadKitten · 01/11/2012 19:39

Oh that must be a worry :(
Are there any mners over there who can help with that somehow? (Posting on fb or twitter or something)
