Looking potentially very serious indeed for the eastern seaboard of the US, perhaps including NYC if some models are correct. The storm will probably be extra tropical but nevertheless if it interacts with a trough modelled off the east coast that could bring down arctic air then the result could be approaching catastrophic, with utterly torrential rain, severe blizzards, hurricane force winds and severe storm surges all being possible.

I think people will be getting very worried about this. Mon tues weds are the days to be watching. Lets hope the storm turns east away from the us coast.

the walk of shame is having to go round to a neighbours house to get water because you did not.

Being prepared is sensible : tie up your camel, THEN trust in Allah

LadyEvilBeagle · 30/10/2012 19:34

What situations OhYouBad?
We get a lot of gales up here but there's very little structural damage, there being not much structure in the first place.
(North West Highlands).
We did have a huge fire a couple of years ago which spread across the hills, like, well wildfire I suppose Grin.
It lasted a couple of days and was scary when it got really close to the house, but the mountains on fire at night looked magnificent, like a volcano.

Triggles and Talking - You are both right, and that is why I bought the water, because I decided that DH's teasing was no issue, compared to being without water.

It is one of those couple things - when others witness it, it probably looks terrible, but between us it is a sort of in-joke. I insist on buying bottled water each time, because "you never know". And we are still drinking the bottles from Irene last year. I resisted buying water this time, until I was at Home Depot looking for a gas can on Saturday morning, and I broke when I saw EVERY SINGLE PERSON buying water. I could not fight the urge, and I bought water as well - only one case. I have now added it to Irene water pile - we will drink it...eventually.

Camping in gales on top of a cliff in the pitch black, a thunderstorm starting and our tent beginning to collapse on top of us springs to mind Grin was convinced that we would either blow out to sea or by struck by lightning.

The other one was in a severe storm in Florida, severe by their standards, it was all over the news for a couple of days. Lots of c-g lightning, high winds, trying to find a motel in the torrential rain and then a tornado (which I heard and recognised but didn't see) touched down a block away and took out some houses. It did cure my of my storm fascination for a little bit.

Spamm, it was sensible, Nassau county have been warned not to drink the water.

( I tend to be a bit of a hoarder of pasta, loo roll and little camping gas cylinders Blush

The derecho would have been terrifying.

Just tried to call Manhattan - got a message saying that landlines and cell networks are not functioning in that area.
THe pictures of 14th street and FDR Drive in the news kinda show why

OhYouBigBadBeast · 30/10/2012 22:22

It must be very frustrating for you talkin. You are right though, the pictures do show the reality of the situation. I hope you get to speak to them soon.

I've just watched the ITV news. Is there a reason that they sent their correspondent to stand on a bridge in the height of the storm? The poor bugger could hardly stand.
Didn't the Emergency Services have enough on their plates rather than to look out for the media from all over the world putting themselves in precarious positions to get a good story?

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 30/10/2012 22:34

Spamm I got tins in for the bird flu epidemic that never was. Luckily in our house that was DH's idea.

LadyEvilBeagle · 30/10/2012 22:48

The news also had a report of babies in incubators being moved after the emergency generator went off, which brought on one of my worse fears.
Having had operations in the past it always scared me to death that the power would go off half way through.
And now I know that it can happen.
Wibble, and vows never ever to go to a hospital again.

ElaineBenes · 31/10/2012 00:28

We have family arriving into JFK tomorrow, flight is going as scheduled so far.

The babies at nyu were on battery operated respirators. Absolutely critical equipment has battery as the last back up.

OhYouBigBadBeast · 31/10/2012 08:13

I hope they make it in ok Elaine.

OhYouBigBadBeast · 31/10/2012 08:16

It does look like some flights will be moving through JFK today :) the beginning of some good news I hope!

fledtoscotland · 31/10/2012 08:24

Fingers crossed Elaine!

OhYouBigBadBeast · 31/10/2012 08:31

JFK expected to reopen at 12 EDT

That info ties in with the latest from air Lingus that this afternoons flights are restarting

cheapandchic · 31/10/2012 11:53

everyone I know in NJ still has no power. they are cold and bored!

ElaineBenes · 31/10/2012 12:04

All my nj friends are without power as well, cheap.

So far so good with the flight. Looks like it might even be early!

But still no subway and my workplace is still shut and no school either. Buses are running now though so that's a good sign.

fledtoscotland · 31/10/2012 13:06

Elaine - who are ur family flying with? Air lingus have said no envisaged problems Grin

ElaineBenes · 31/10/2012 13:34

El Al. I can't believe they were so lucky. It's the first flight without delays or cancellations. I know it's really minor in comparison to what others are going through but my kids are so looking forward to seeing their baby cousin who they haven't met yet!

TalkinPeace2 · 31/10/2012 15:23

No power or hot water due where my Dad lives till Friday at the earliest
and the landline phone system is down too ...
joy

mumblechum1 · 31/10/2012 15:38

Well, although ds was hoping the school trip would take them to NY today so they'd at least have 24 hours there, they're definitely not going now.

aargh. Took ages to save up the money, it was a bloody expensive trip and they've spent the last 2 days in the hotel basement in Washington. Sad.

TalkinPeace2 · 31/10/2012 16:00

if they go round all of the Smithsonian's they'll have a fab and memorable trip

to go from DC to NY they have to go through NJ - look at the pictures of Hoboken to see why they are not ....

mumblechum1 · 31/10/2012 16:27

Thanks Talkin. I've just called the tour organisers (the school have been crap at letting us know what's happening). Today they're visiting Gettysburg, having dinner in a nice restaurant in DC and then tomorrow visiting Mt Vernon on the way to JFK. They're catching the redeye tomorrow night (hopefully).

TalkinPeace2 · 31/10/2012 16:36

Mt Vernon is FAB - went there as a kid
They should be OK to get through to JFK - the bridges are opening, if not the tunnels

TBH what has happened has never happened to a tour group before so the fact that they are a bit flummoxed is no great surprise.

I just saw a guy on FB ask how deep the water in the garage where he stores his car was
and it took him a few posts to realise that 'to the roof' meant exactly that ....

MrsJamin · 31/10/2012 19:10

We're ok, having a nightmare getting flights back - DH might not be back until next week :(. I fly out tomorrow. We have no power, heating or hot water at our apartment and this is set to be for the next week. We are part of the daily migration uptown to charge phones and get wifi. It's all very depressing but at least we are safe and will return soon hopefully.
