Monday 12th September looks possibly jolly nasty weather wise for Scotland

One of the models (GFS) shows a very nasty low (I think its ex-hurricane Katia) for Monday for Scotland. Now Monday is a long way off and it may well not happen but the potential is there, so well worth keeping an eye on the met office warnings page as we get closer.

WW - I'd imagine their sailing might be cancelled? (esp if its early in the day)

LD - the problem is of course that forecasting isnt an exact science - its all probabilities, so he may be right for your location (no idea whereabouts you are!) , but a little preparation saves a lot of issues.

As an extreme example look at Hurricane Irene - all the way up and down the east coast of the US people prepared. Many areas got by without too much issue and would have shrugged their shoulders and asked what all the fuss was about. Lots of people would have said 'I told you it wasnt going to be a problem, nothing happened' but look at what happened in Vermont - terrible flooding and are still struggling to recover.

Had strong wind here last Wed. Was that the tail end of Irene? Trees still have their leaves, however IMO that most of the weak ones were taken down in the mad winds we had in May. We'll see.....

DH starts his night shift at 10pm on Monday and has a 35 mile commute over some high ground. Ugh. Weather is the only thing that freaks me about him travelling so far.

oh crumbs decapitated. He'll really need to pay attention to the forecast.

bbc are going for gusts of 80mph but I think that would be western cpasts of the affected area.

I hope everyone takes heed and prepares for this storm - with the trees still in leaf it's going to be nasty.

Yesterday was very muggy here, it still is now though the breeze is picking up and it's getting windy.

Would you cancel a planned journey (ayrshire to edinburgh on a bus) due to the weather on Monday? Will it be that bad?

Can I just add a warning for those with animals kept outside? We have moved all our rabbits and guinea pigs into the kitchen just to be on the safe side.

I imagine horses, chickens, kennelled dogs etc might need careful thought too.

Iggi (and anyone else travelling tomorrow) ~ watching the weather on News 24 an hour or two ago, I got the impression that the 5pm rush hour/tomorrow evening, is when it's going to be the worst part of the day for those in the metoffice's amber area.

I wouldnt cancel a bus journey I dont think - I'd see what the bus company decide to do.
Looks like 80mph gusts are quite possible now with very very heavy rain also being an issue (up to 100mm)
Please, if you are in an amber area take this very seriously. If you are in a yellow area, then remember to still be aware - the potential for disruption and perhaps dangerous conditions is still there.

Good point carrots about animals.

I have a three-hour, 120 mile journey, heading northwest to take tomorrow, all within the amber zone. Any idea when it's likely to be at it's worst?

Tomorrow evening - I'd do any travelling early in the day.

Excellent :)

worth keeping an eye on things just in case, storms arent always so predictable. I'm going to try and do an update before I go off to work if I can find a few minutes.

A special warning for those in the lee of the pennines - warning on r4 of up to 80mph gusts. That is damaging.

Been round the garden checking for loose stuff. fingers crossed we escape the worst here.

I'm glad DM is with us at the moment, they always get high wionds really badly where she lives - the bridge is usually shut. (west of Scotland)
