Thundersnow

Wow! I don't think I've ever had that in my lifetime that I can remember.
We've just had snow then hail at the same time as having a proper loud scarey thunderstorn and lightening overhead.
I'd though storms like that were just in the summer.

We had a bit in south Kent earlier. Didn't amount to much though, just a couple of lightning flashes and thunder. Sounds like you had it proper.

It means you have very turbulent air and it is being pushed a long way up into the atmosphere. That causes charging of the cloud which gives the lightning.

Must be a weird thing to experience, since snow usually falls silently.

Was pretty scary - glad it's stopped now.
Sort of makes you feel very vulnerable with the snowy/icey ground rumbling.

We had a severe thunder and lightning storm with snow at the end of November here in Dublin. Facebook was full of status updates about never having seen snow with a thunderstorm before.

It did feel quite ominous, a forewarning of the apocalypse or the end of the world or something.

We had that a few weeks ago up in the NE and that's the first time I've ever seen it. I agree, at the time we were saying "apocalypse"

We had it a couple of weeks ago in Dundee when there was the really bad snow here - some thunder this morning, but nowhere near as dramatic. It was very impressive - the skies were lit up red

The other time you get that is around exploding volcanoes - the air is pushed up really high, and that together with all the dust builds up the cahrges, and you can get lightning and hail and snow.

It is pretty rare in the UK but a few on MN have mentioned similar in the last few snow events.
