Off to look at the models and into next week....

Looks like cold northerlies and easterlies next week I'm afraid as high pressure builds to our north 9or there-abouts) Precipitation is impossible to quantify but any that occurs will be snow. GFS looks dry to start, but as you know by now, snow can crop up very quickly.

I have to say, if you are able to get out and about to do things like posting parcels, getting Christmas supplies in this weekend, then I would do so as the milder interlude that starts tomorrow looks set to finish by Monday.

For today, well looks like East Anglia gets the worst of the snow. Cliiping the NE too. Cold.

It's snowing in Leicestershire-has been for about an hour now and is settling on the icy ground.

Minus 3 here in Tameside, but sunny. Parths and roads still treacherous.

Sunny but cold (south Cumbria) roads deadly once you leave the main rd.

We had a few flakes of snow (Leicester) for about an hour this morning but it's bright sunshine now. We didn't have a frost overnight (such a relief not having to clear the car for at least one morning!), which was surprising because when I went to pick DD1 up from a drama class at 5pm last night, we had freezing fog and the temp guage was saying it was -5. So it definitely warmed up during the night.

I wonder if it's a reflection of how cold it's been; the last 2 mornings around 7am, I've seen a fox crossing the road in front of our house. Wonder if open countryside is too cold for them at the moment!

Think I'll follow OYBBK's good advice and get some supplies in tomorrow, as it looks like we're getting another cold blast next week!

It's looking like only a brief respite from the extreme cold and snow.

Today for the first day this week the hoar frost has finally gone.

It's very beautiful , and I'm sorry I didn't take my camera out and take some pictures, especially today as the sun finally got through, but it's just too cold and I'm a winter and snow lover, I wouldn't have minded so much if we'd got a good snowfall, but sadly we didn't get much of the white stuff here over the last 2 weeks, fellow weather watchers in the East have nick-named us the Clingfilm Corridor.

Hopefully we'll see some more with the next lots of cold and snow coming, although my thoughts go out to the people in Scotland and the North who have had to put up with such heavy snowfall, I'm sure even as a snow-lover there's only so much snow you can take.

For now till the weekend, it's just a case of checking the charts etc, and seeing if the results stay the same and the cold/snow does come back with a vengance.

every time I watch the news I am astonished. The realities of deep snow are so far from the romantic images of children playing happily. Even though where Iam has had comparitively little snow and we live in a pretty modern house with heating, life is quite a bit more work.

sharbie - This weekend - def not! Early in the week probably not, it looks pretty dry. Later then??? Perhaps. You might have gathered predicting snow more than a day or 3 in advance is a bit like trying to predict how many Lib Dem Mp's will get some balls and vote with their conscience and not the party whip.

I grilled a friendly meteorologist. He reckons Greenland highs are the future. ANd cold next week but not as cool as this (thank feck).

Where I am, it's the ice that's the problem, thick layers of it. There just hasn't been nearly enough gritting, nearly fast enough. I know I looked at my street and thought 'ooh pretty snow' then 'that's really quite a lot of snow' and didn't think about what would happen when it ices up.

His thoughts are interesting, I wonder why he thinks they are the future. I think there has been some supposition that it may be a consequence of global warming.

Yes: he said the melting of the arctic ice has meant that there is more water around. The ice usually reflects the solar energy but the water is absorbing it, and radiating it back into the lower atmosphere, setting up larger circulations where there was ice, and those circulations are pushing cold air further south.
Hence we might well see more colder weather in future.
I think I might move!

Oh cool - I'll have to do some reading about that.
Though if this is a sign of things to come then oh dear. We had best get our act together as a country!
