There is a yellow warning on the Met office for the south of England. I have never heard of this. Does anyone know what it is?

It's a heavy frost - the stuff that looks likes it's been snowing.

mankyscotslass · 05/12/2010 21:08

It's beautiful, thick and almost furry looking, and in certain lights looks purple.

But it's not so good for driving in, very icy.

southeastastra · 05/12/2010 21:10

is there a picture? can't visualise that at all :D

GrimmaTheNome · 05/12/2010 21:15

Its not uncommon is it - when the moisture in the air freezes on things and covers them in ice crystals. If the conditions create it for a few days it can get quite thick, looks amazing.

BCBG · 05/12/2010 21:15

Basically as the others have said: a very very heavy frost that coats all the twigs and branches with frost that persists: like the world has been lightly iced... if it happens, grab a camera

GrimmaTheNome · 05/12/2010 21:18

of course there are pictures

MegGriffin · 05/12/2010 21:19

We have thick fog at the moment. I will look forward to this hoar frost with interest!

If you've fog and its below freezing you should get hoar frost. I think its starting to form here in Lancashire too.

winterpetunia · 06/12/2010 09:55

We've got freezing fog and a lovely hoar frost this morning. Car's temp guage was saying it was between -7 and -8 on the school run.

BaroqinAroundTheChristmasTree · 06/12/2010 09:56

here too in Northamptonshire. Or to be more precise formed over night - it's actually blue skies now - but everything looking lovely

SoupDragon · 06/12/2010 09:56

the railings near the duck pond had hoar frost last week. It looked like rows of sharp little teeth.

Berk · 06/12/2010 10:02

We have that here in Lancashire, not had snow, had freezing fog over the weekend. Looks lovely and wintry but glad am not driving today.

Berk · 06/12/2010 10:03

Oh Grin

moonmother · 06/12/2010 11:02

We have a hoar frost here in Bedfordshire.

Well, actually half on my town has it the other half has freezing fog and black ice on the pavements.

The hoar frost is beautiful

BaroqinAroundTheChristmasTree · 07/12/2010 08:56

Oh - we have a proper hoar frost this morning. It's absolutely bloody freezing out there but so beautiful. I legged it back to the house on the school run to grab my camera (and the boys tried not to look too embarrassed as I was taking photos along the way)

comixminx · 07/12/2010 09:00

We've got beautiful hoar frost here near Stroud! Must take a piccie once I've finished feeding...

OP, it's a phrase I think I probably came across in slightly old-fashioned kids books - Enid Blton sort of thing maybe? Perhaps it's not used that much nowadays if you're not familiar with it?

blueberrysantabait · 07/12/2010 09:02

We have a stunning hoar frost in Wiltshire this morning. If I wasn't waiting for the plumber the girls and I would be out with the camera.

We have it here in Herefordshire too. Very pretty, I've been taking pictures of it but the ice on the roads and paths is getting boring now.
