Hello! This is my first post.
My baby is 14 weeks old and mainly breastfed. Because she seems to struggle to get full I give her at least one bottle of formula per day (usually at night time so she'll sleep for a longer time. She seems very interested in our meals and I'm thinking of weaning her early. I'd like to hear about peoples experiences of weaning before the recommended 6 months and any advice.

my poor ds... he is lying on his tummy right now, is bottle fed AND was weaned early

fsmail · 07/07/2005 18:54

My sisters and I were all weaned early and I have asthma, one has irritable bowel and the other has bad allergies. One Bf her babies exclusively for six months and all of her kids now have allergies and one has severe asthma. Mine were weaned at 16 weeks. Guidelines set by HV who I trusted. There are other things that can cause the above including too many chemicals in the house etc. Please do not make people blaim yourself if your child gets one of the above. It could happen anyway and to tell somebody they will be to blaim if their child gets in is preaching! If you want to be a preacher make your comment and leave it at that. Don't get shirty.

HM, we must have

micha26 · 07/07/2005 18:56

Love that one fsmail

Why do people get so offended when research is mentioned? If you knew about it and chose to go against it, fine. You did what you thought was right. That doesnt mean knowledge shouldnt be mentioned and hidden away.

Twiglett · 07/07/2005 18:57

after the stress of today I just can't cope with this thread as the fact that people would knowingly endanger a young baby because it makes their lives easier is getting to me more than it should so I shall bow out and look for another way to release the tension

micha26 · 07/07/2005 18:58

Nobody is against mentioning whatever you believe in. But people were talking as if no good mother should ever dare to go against recommendations and that is just nonsense

hercules · 07/07/2005 18:58

I said I was going some way back.Really must go now. It's not even funny anymore.

Norash · 07/07/2005 18:58

Hercules why do you keep going on about things that have already been clarified?

Were you weaned early or something

micha26 · 07/07/2005 18:58

Bye, bye Twiglett

sweetkitty · 07/07/2005 18:59

is this still going? just had dinner turkey twizzlers and baby pasta

hercules · 07/07/2005 18:59

Not if it can harm her child. Weaning before 4 months can be harmful. \why pretend otherwise?

Norash · 07/07/2005 18:59

Twiglett why don't you go cry about it then.

Norash · 07/07/2005 18:59

Twiglett why don't you go cry about it then.

hercules · 07/07/2005 19:00

cos no one's listening [throws toys out of pram}

micha26 · 07/07/2005 19:00

You don't know if it can harm the child. It is only what you read and what you believe in. Still, what others do is none of your business

Norash · 07/07/2005 19:00

I thought you were leaving Hercules.

hercules · 07/07/2005 19:01

I give up.

before I go - is the whole thing about smoking and cancer a big fat lie too?

hercules · 07/07/2005 19:01

Now I'm leaving

SoupDragon · 07/07/2005 19:02

"Twiglett why don't you go cry about it then"

Blimey, that's just plain rude.

lailag · 07/07/2005 19:02

Well, I do a lot of bad things, let dh take dd and ds to Mc Donalds, let them watch TV for hours as I can't be bothered to play with them. It's my choice and I will still do it regardless of what other people say, the difference is that I realise I am doing something which is possibly putting them at risk

micha26 · 07/07/2005 19:03

I don't think so. I never smoked anyway. And I didn't need somebody to tell me that it can cause cancer. It is just common sense that inhaling smoking isn't good for you. Or would you inhale from the exhaust of your car, just because nobody told you it isn't recommended to do so? Duh

hercules · 07/07/2005 19:04

When people first started smoking they had no idea it was bad for them. It took research to prove this.

hunkermunker · 07/07/2005 19:04

There is no research that shows that weaning early is good for babies. There is research that shows that weaning early is bad for them and leaving it till they are around six months is far better for them.

If you choose to ignore that, that's up to you. Frankly, I don't care what you do with your child if you're snidey and defensive about it. Too much evil has happened today in my home town to continue with this pointless thread.

Norash · 07/07/2005 19:04

They were rude to me first teacher.
