Hello! This is my first post.
My baby is 14 weeks old and mainly breastfed. Because she seems to struggle to get full I give her at least one bottle of formula per day (usually at night time so she'll sleep for a longer time. She seems very interested in our meals and I'm thinking of weaning her early. I'd like to hear about peoples experiences of weaning before the recommended 6 months and any advice.

Twiglett · 07/07/2005 18:33

I take back my taking back .. you truly are idiotic in that stance .. truly, truly idiotic

Norash · 07/07/2005 18:34

I and all 3 siblings were weaned at 2 months and all slept on the tummy, still do. And guess what........ we all turned out just fine too

Lonelymum · 07/07/2005 18:35

Not surprised this has kicked off. Poor thymes2, we won't see her again I should think! I just had to say that I loved your comment Spidermama about the WHO not being Chrstopher Ecclestone anymore! Good one. I was thinking Roger Daltry myself....

Sorry, I am sure this is all very serious and I am being entirely flippant, but gosh I could do with a laugh right now. Off to find it elsewhere.

Norash · 07/07/2005 18:36

Twiglett do you really think that anyone is bothered about what you think about them?

hercules · 07/07/2005 18:36

I find this light hearted up till now but I think talking about SIDS in this manner is out of line.

lailag · 07/07/2005 18:36

my friend'sgranddad from 3rd world country, smokes is 91 y old and plays tennis

micha26 · 07/07/2005 18:37

My daughter was born 15 years ago - 8 weeks premature. She had serious health problems because of infections picked up in the hospital ICBU. After I took her home I did what was best for her without any involvement of "experts". She always slept on her tummy. She was weaned at 16 weeks and is a very healthy teenager now, who was unlike many of her school mates no skin problems or other health problems whatsoever.

Norash · 07/07/2005 18:37

Who is SIDS?

Twiglett · 07/07/2005 18:38

no you tend to find people who believe they are right no matter what anyone else might say to the contrary don't care what others think of them

Norash · 07/07/2005 18:39

Bulls-eye

lailag · 07/07/2005 18:39

Actually the real reason I weaned at 6 mo is so I had more time on mn. At the moment trying to plug dd in (2 1/2 y though), while she is keener for me to play with puzzles with her.

micha26 · 07/07/2005 18:39

Exactly. That makes us so strong and independent and leaves others green with envy

micha26 · 07/07/2005 18:42

Norash - looks like we won this one

Nightynight · 07/07/2005 18:43

I think there is a difference between the sleeping on back and the weaning thing though.

sleeping on their backs is a life/death issue, and for the overwhelming majority of babies, there are really no strong arguments for them to sleep on their tummies.

introducing solid food is less clear-cut, because there are more issues involved.

hercules · 07/07/2005 18:44

Yes, I'm going to ignore all medical advice and research because of what you've posted.

Norash · 07/07/2005 18:46

Whatever Hercules, go flex those muscles elsewhere

micha26 · 07/07/2005 18:46

Sorry, even regarding this issue, can't share your confidence in so called research. Most of the medical research is based on statistics in lack of stringent proof. If you have ever seen how physicians do their statistics, you would be very careful what to believe.

My brother is a neurologist and has worked long enough in research. The mathematical background and foundation of these people is more than doubtful.

Twiglett · 07/07/2005 18:47

hercules some people aren't worth bothering about tbh

hercules · 07/07/2005 18:47

Yes, you're right. Honestly, I do try to avoid these threads!

Norash · 07/07/2005 18:48

Well said twiglett

Peace.

Lonelymum · 07/07/2005 18:48

When your baby is old enough to roll over though, I would recommend putting them to sleep on their tummies. All of mine prefered it once they were old enough to do as they pleased in this matter and all of them slept better because of it. I am not arguing against the back to sleep campaign, but it is worth knowing any first time mums with older babies who have difficulties getting the baby to sleep the night.

micha26 · 07/07/2005 18:52

Exactly. Sleeping on the tummy is a very natural position that even adults still enjoy. But some mothers prefer sleepless nights for their babies and themselves. Nights of uninterrupted sleep are essential not only for the mother, but first of all for the babies. And that is much more likely to happen if they are put on their tummies.

hunkermunker · 07/07/2005 18:53

Blinking heck, can't believe you lot have got so het up about this!

You must all have been weaned early. It's obviously affected your brains
