Hello! This is my first post.
My baby is 14 weeks old and mainly breastfed. Because she seems to struggle to get full I give her at least one bottle of formula per day (usually at night time so she'll sleep for a longer time. She seems very interested in our meals and I'm thinking of weaning her early. I'd like to hear about peoples experiences of weaning before the recommended 6 months and any advice.

It's sad that so many people have lost faith in the concept of research due to the advent of heavilsy biased research carried out by parties with financial interests in the outcomes (eg pharmaceutical companies, Nestle etc).

The same, however, could not be said of the WHO.

Would late weaning not make the infants more resistent to malaria, diphteria etc, considering the immunological advantages(if we can believe medical research). In general malnourishment would make peole more susceptible to infections. BTW that is why they are starting to pay more attention to hospital food a la James Oliver.

the who.. hehe

In the nineties they told us we should put babies on their tummies to reduce the risk of cot death. Now they are telling us to put them on their backs. If they change their minds again in 3 years from now, will you then feel guilty?

I prefer to put my son on his tummy - he just loves it and by 6 months he will still have his hair on the back of the head unlike all the other ones...

Just point out that thymes2 said that this was her first post!

Hope you're still there thymes2!

must admit, this subject gets me riled too. when we were babies ourselves in the 1970s, people were weaning at 2 1/2 months in Britain!

I introduced baby rice around 10 weeks for ds2, because I couldnt keep up with his demands for breast milk. Its nothing to do with confidence. I am a very confident breast feeder, but I physically couldnt sit there 23 hours out of 24 while he was feeding!

when I did that, the official advice was 4 months. Now its 6 months. No way could I have held out until 6 months exclusively breast feeding any of my babies. I dont believe that nature intended mothers to be chained to a permanently hungry baby all day, and people who've done it know what I am talking about.

I think if you managed to get to 6 months, then well done, and maybe you were just a little bit lucky that your baby wasnt too hungry, and that you were able to put the time in.

But its an unrealistic thing for most of us.

You all seem to put such faith in Roger Daltry and the other members. Why?

starlover · 07/07/2005 18:25

it' because they're welsh.

micha26 · 07/07/2005 18:25

Jamie Oliver . He is now supposed to be an expert on healthy food? Doesn't seem to work on himself though

Twiglett · 07/07/2005 18:25

Snurk at spider

spidermama · 07/07/2005 18:25

In what sense micha?

starlover · 07/07/2005 18:26

maybe if they wrote a song about early weaning.. more people would listen

Twiglett · 07/07/2005 18:26

I would be far more worried putting a baby to sleep on its tummy if it was unable to roll over .. if you really are doing this just because you prefer it please check out the Sands website

spidermama · 07/07/2005 18:26

She;s an early weaner
there has to be a twist
an early weaner

pmsl spidermama

lailag · 07/07/2005 18:27

nightynight, well about dd/ds being chained to the breast, why do you think I spend so much time on mumsnet (although not sure what came first...)

micha26 · 07/07/2005 18:28

In every sense [smile}

spidermama · 07/07/2005 18:28

I know the feeling lail, but it's not good for typing is it. It;'s alright when baby's on left breast cos can type one handed with right hand.

aloha · 07/07/2005 18:29

Sheesh, some people are bonkers. This isn't Lav, is it???

spidermama · 07/07/2005 18:29

Do you mean, micha, that he's a little porky? Personally I love Jamie and dh understands.

Norash · 07/07/2005 18:30

Spidermama are you trying to say that left handers cannot type with one hand

Runs off and hides in the coner

lailag · 07/07/2005 18:30

spidermama, gueass which breast is "working hardest"...

aloha · 07/07/2005 18:30

Agree with Twiglett re lying on tummy.

micha26 · 07/07/2005 18:30

Porky? Ok, whatever. One woman's meat is another woman's poison. But nice that your DH is so understanding.

micha26 · 07/07/2005 18:32

Tummy is really the best and babies love it. Just give it a try. They even sleep better. Can only recommend.
