Hello! This is my first post.
My baby is 14 weeks old and mainly breastfed. Because she seems to struggle to get full I give her at least one bottle of formula per day (usually at night time so she'll sleep for a longer time. She seems very interested in our meals and I'm thinking of weaning her early. I'd like to hear about peoples experiences of weaning before the recommended 6 months and any advice.

Does it reader to the year you were born then? (26)

Oh, and in countries where there is an unsafe water supply and poor hygiene, early weaning can indeed kill babies. Breastmilk is safe.

twiglett - that is my regular posting name. I would never change my nickname just to post something controversial.

Twiglett · 07/07/2005 18:16

I'm taller than all of you .. SNURK

Twiglett · 07/07/2005 18:17

so, micha .. you've been with us for 2 days and this is only the 2nd thread you've posted on? welcome oh old one

hercules · 07/07/2005 18:17

It's ironic that people who usually argue against the WHO do so as they believe it only applies to developing countries. You're arguing that it doesnt apply to developing countries as they are far better nourished.

starlover · 07/07/2005 18:17

oh SD. i don't doubt that early weaning can kill... just that a comparison of imr isn't that clean cut!

SoupDragon · 07/07/2005 18:18

No, search archives Twiglett. I think he's Norash's dh.

micha26 · 07/07/2005 18:18

No, I'm not a newbie, just not a regular poster. Not too many threads on here which are so nicely controversial. That just made my day.

starlover · 07/07/2005 18:18

btw i don't think that anyone was saying that people in the 3rd world are better nourished... just that they wean early and are ok because of that. ie, not suffering due to early weaning...

(just clarifying, not saying i agree!)

Norash · 07/07/2005 18:18

I see you guys are still at it.

lailag · 07/07/2005 18:18

well Twiglett, it is a bit like I told DH before getting married. Of course he could smoke... but not in our house/car/smell of smoke in my vicinity etc.
More seriously, yes, I don't live a healthy life/don't eat healthy food but try to feed my children healthy food etc. If bf could possibly reduce the risks of eczema, well that is good enough for me

Twiglett · 07/07/2005 18:19

oh ok .. I'm still taller than him

hercules · 07/07/2005 18:19

No, teenagers in developing countries were said to be healthier than teenagers here.

spidermama · 07/07/2005 18:19

Cor Blimey! You never know when it's all gonna kick off on MN. That was fab. Don't stop.

aloha · 07/07/2005 18:19

should the research that proved that putting babies to sleep on their backs have also been suppressed? it has saved the lives of untold numbers of babies. mothers do not always know best

starlover · 07/07/2005 18:19

i think a lot of them probably are. but there are also a lot who are much, much worse off.

SoupDragon · 07/07/2005 18:19

Oh, I realise that, Starlover, but it's simpy ridiculous to suggest that "Kids in Africa are weaned from about 2 months and seem to be just fine". When they're clearly not.

Twiglett · 07/07/2005 18:20

I'm taller than hercules too
