Anyone just started, or about to start, BLW? Care to join me?

1000 replies

Jojay · 03/05/2009 16:46

DS2 is 27 weeks and from last week, is now joining us a mealtimes.

I tried spoonfeeding for a few days but he didn't seem keen, so I tried him with some roasted veg and he was well away. So BLW it is for us.

But I did purees for DS1 2 years ago, so BLW is new to me.

So far he's had roasted sweet potato, carrot, aubergine, courgette, sweet pepper, some lightly steamed apple and pear, banana, mango, and a chip.

When I say 'had' I mean I've offered it to him. Some probably went straight on the floor, but I've found some lumps in his nappy, so some is definitely going in.

The mango was the biggest hit - he loved it!

So tell me what you're doing and how it's going...........

Pushmepullyou- I knew I recognised the name

Sydney and Joyjay- Ds has only been drinking maybe 4oz of his bottle for the last few days but this isn't unusual for him as he does this quite often and then has a hungry phase again. He's still having 5 bottles a day though. I'm not convinced yet if he is really eating much so not sure if less milk is because of the food or just him being him iykwim??

Tonight dh and I had pasta bake for dinner, it's Uncle Ben's so not that healthy for ds but I knew he wouldn't have much. I gave him a few bits of pasta to try and he loved it! Now I know pasta is a hit I'll make it from scratch next time so it will be healthier. He didn't eat much pasta but sucked most bits clean of the sauce.

We are off on hols tomorrow so it will be interesting to see how blw goes abroad. I'm hoping it will be easy. Good luck everyone and speak to you in 10 days xx

CantSleepWontSleep · 15/05/2009 21:37

Well ds has eaten so little over the last few days with his teething, that his poo has gone from totally solid back to bf poo with bits in - yuk!

He still hardly ate anything today (oddly enough, he had a couple of organix crisps for the first time at lunchtime too!), until dinner time, when he managed to demolish a decent amount of sweet potato, carrot, mashed potato, green beans and a bit of toad in the hole (batter only, no sausage).

No carpet here either. Ds just drops stuff on stone floor and we give it right back. A bit of dirt helps to build their immunity .

AitchTwoOh · 15/05/2009 21:39

at the moment dd2 likes her cucumber in slices, then i peel the slice and twist the knife into the middle to pop out the seeds. dd sticks her thumb into the hole and nibbles.

pushmepullyou · 15/05/2009 22:13

Do you need to remove the seeds? I haven't bothered so far as I've just been peeling the cucumber and cutting it into fingers (hungry guinea pigs are waiting for the scraps )

I have been cheating a bit today as well tbh as I have held up some mango sticks for her as she struggles a bit to pick them up then gets frustrated. I only hold them in front of her though and she grabs ny hand and pulls it to her mouth, so I figure it probably still 'counts' iyswim?

CantSleepWontSleep · 15/05/2009 22:15

i've never removed a cucumber seed in my life.
We peel cucumber here, as that's the way that dd has always liked it.

AitchTwoOh · 15/05/2009 22:30

pushme... it's not cheating. nothing's cheating. not using a spoon, not spoon feeding, not nothing. it's all just weaning your kid, however you're most comfortable doing it.

i remove the seeds when i'm making a greek salad.

SydneyB · 16/05/2009 15:36

Wooden floor here and I do the same as CSWS.. building super immunity here what with cat (DS has been known to drag silly cat's tail into mouth and suck) and snotty toddler too.

BelleWatling · 16/05/2009 16:04

Thanks for balsamic / basil roast veg recommendation Jojay - just tried this and it was delicious. I'm normally just a garlic and olive oil gal.

Aitch / anyone - should I worry about vomiting up food? He had asparagus an hour ago and just sicked it up. I looked up V in Gill Rapley and it only went to vitamins...

He is quite a 'posseter' anyway.

Thanks.

Jojay · 16/05/2009 16:15

Glad you liked the roasted veg Belle

Ds2 vomits up food quite a while after eating it too - only a mouthful usually, but like yours, he's always been a 'sicky' baby.

It doesn't seem to bother him so I don't worry about it. If it was larger quantities I might.

AitchTwoOh · 16/05/2009 21:04

oh lord don't ask me... my opinion on this whole parent thing is that if your maternal spider senses think something is wrong, act on it in some fashion. if not, don't.

knickers0nmahead · 16/05/2009 21:54

hiya everyone, we are on day two of blw with ds who is....erm 6 n half month ish not going so bad but he gets very frustrated when he cant pick something up. We did blw with dd too. Today he gas had potato, leak and cheese bake for dinner and spanish chicken for tea which he didnt do too bad with.

SydneyB · 17/05/2009 17:57

Melon!! Oh my god, best thing ever. Easy to hold and DS just sucked and sucked and loved it!

pushmepullyou · 17/05/2009 20:08

Oooh hadn't thought of melon as I'm not keen, but will give it a go

God knows what I'm going to do with the rest of the melon though

Thanks for the reassurance aitch . Bloody HVs make you feel so insecure!

Cokie · 17/05/2009 20:53

I have just started BLW with my DS who has just turned 6 months. Normally everything he can get his hands on ends up in his mouth but he just looks at my lovingly prepared veg with no interest whatsoever, he won't even pick it up! He has never shown any interest in food. Is this normal?

SydneyB · 17/05/2009 21:24

Don't worry Cokie. That's the joy of BLW. They start when they're ready. He'll start eating when he wants to, just keep offering him what you're having. Remember they all walk and crawl at different stages.

Cokie · 17/05/2009 21:39

Thanks for the reassurance SydneyB - just a wobble in my confidence I guess. I have read the Gill Rapley book, read Aitch's blog, and done so much research into BLW but I still think I expected DS just to get stuck in and to eat straight away! HV told me he has to be "eating at 6 months" to help with speach development so I am panicing. I will just chill out..

pushmepullyou · 17/05/2009 21:52

Cokie - see my 'bloody HV' above

He will be fine - its the chewing and manouvering of food in the mouth that helps with speech. This will happen much better/faster with blw than slurping puree even if it's a bit slower getting going.

Jojay · 17/05/2009 22:06

Hi Cokie, nice to see you here
Just to echo what Sydney said, don't worry if you're DS isn't instantly interested - mine wasn't either. Now, at the grand old age of 29 weeks, he's getting into it more, but still has off days when he's not bothered. If you can manage it around his sleep times, sitting him up at the table when you eat will help, as hopefully he'll try to copy what you're doing, and you'll be away.

Hi to Knickers too - sounds like your Ds is doing really well - lots of boys on this thread aren't there? Yay!

Sydney, Ds loves melon too. Must buy another one - they were on offer in Tesco's last week.

Bit of an off day here - we were out and about a lot, which DS HATES - he's a real homebird and is rubbish at sleeping in the buggy / sling, so he was really vile tired by tea time. He wasn't too interested in his veggies but had a bit of a go at a fish finger, but I don't think any went in.

Never mind, tomorrow is another day

knickers0nmahead · 18/05/2009 09:59

ive had a stew in the slow cooker overnight for the dc. Cokie, just to echo what everyone has said really and also that some babies dont eat anything until they turn one so your hv is talking balls. Like someone else said, all babies do things at different times, my ds isnt even sitting up properly yet, amd has no teeth!

KirstyJC · 18/05/2009 12:56

Hello to all!

Well we have had a mixed weekend with DS; he had a massive puking session on Friday (lasting several hours) after eating green beans, broccoli and roast potatoes, poor chap . Not sure but it seemed to be the 'eaten something bad' sick rather than just something he didn't like, so I must have kept the food badly or something so I'm not doing that again! He only had milk for the rest of the day and for most of Sat.

However, back to food on Sunday - he gummed a seeded toast soldier (not bothered about the egg) and then breadsticks and cottage pie dip (using up the jars we bought before doing BLW grin). Cue chufty dance in the bathroom when I saw all the little seeds in his nappy from the toast later!

Just now he had some breadsticks and dip again (high in salt but only having miniscule amount) and then the little bugger darling swiped half my kitkat!! .

I let him have it for a bit and he was loving sucking the chocolate off, but then guilt got the better of me and I took it away from him. He was NOT impressed and screamed the house down!

The only problem with letting babies eat the same as me is with my diet....suppose I had better start eating good food too....!

BelleWatling · 18/05/2009 18:28

Thanks Aitch, I'm afraid years of working for The Man big corporations has conditioned any sense, common, spidey or otherwise out of me. I am used to getting everything signed off by twenty lawyers and accountants first...so maternal instinct is taking a while to kick in and I am still going round asking 'is it OK if...' - HVs love me.

He was fine and I hope yours is as well Kirsty.

BLW going very well - lots of content rich poos (nice) and he had his first Sunday dinner yesterday. Tonight...noodles! My mum was not at all sure about BLW and doesn't believe me when I tell her he's eating rice cakes.

I am also making lots of spreads / pates for said rice cakes - lentil, beetroot etc so haven't escaped the pureeing and mini-freezer carton grind completely.

I also recommend the JoJoMamanBebe long sleeve, waterproof bibs.

Chulita · 19/05/2009 14:32

Sweet potato and green beans were a hit today although I'm slowly learning that DD's most interested in food that's going in my mouth rather than what's on her table. She turned down a bit of pitta and then stole my whole one when I took her out of her chair and sat her on my knee...exactly the same food but obviously I'd have saved the tastier one for myself Very funny when she sticks a green bean in her mouth and then looks around with it all sticking out - what a lady!

KirstyJC · 19/05/2009 14:58

My DS has done that with green beans - quite a photo opportunity .

Today we had spag bol and a breadstick, followed by banana and a strawberry - first time he's had these and they were a big hit!

Am going to the HV tomorrow and I will tell her about BLW....wonder what she'll say?

Jojay · 20/05/2009 09:17

Morning all - yep, DS2 has the green bean, eccentric farmer look down to a T too

Ds's nose is bunged up and is finding it hard to breast feed, let alone eat much at the moment. Also we went swimming yesterday which has irritated his eczema so he's feeling a bit sorry for himself

Saying that, he was swiping bits of roast chicken off my fork on Monday night, and had a good go at some veg, and then last night chomped on a bit of jacket potato and a sausage, os he's having a go.

Went to clinic yesterday and his weightgain is fine, so I'm obviously not starving him just yet!

greensnail · 20/05/2009 15:41

Hi everyone, can we join?

Have been watching this thread for a while as was planning on starting BLW in a few weeks. Last night my 21 week old DD grabbed some broccoli and seemed to enjoy squidging it around her mouth, so I think she's telling me she wants to start now!

Im a bit concerned it might be a little too early as she was born a bit early (at 36 weeks). But she can sit up unsupported in her high chair and is good at picking up toys and putting them in her mouth. I suppose she won't be actually swallowing much food for a while anyway.

Today she's slept through our breakfast and lunch but has licked a stawberry this afternoon. I think i'll see what she thinks of some veg when we eat this evening.
