Anyone just started, or about to start, BLW? Care to join me?

1000 replies

Jojay · 03/05/2009 16:46

DS2 is 27 weeks and from last week, is now joining us a mealtimes.

I tried spoonfeeding for a few days but he didn't seem keen, so I tried him with some roasted veg and he was well away. So BLW it is for us.

But I did purees for DS1 2 years ago, so BLW is new to me.

So far he's had roasted sweet potato, carrot, aubergine, courgette, sweet pepper, some lightly steamed apple and pear, banana, mango, and a chip.

When I say 'had' I mean I've offered it to him. Some probably went straight on the floor, but I've found some lumps in his nappy, so some is definitely going in.

The mango was the biggest hit - he loved it!

So tell me what you're doing and how it's going...........

Oh joy, now she's smearing her pancakey little hands all over the TV screen. BLW has a lot to answer for

Hulla · 15/10/2009 10:33

Lol! I found bits of pancake in dd's nappy - but not eaten ifswim. I think my pancake mix was quite thick but I put it in the pan anyway! Lol! It occur to me to add milk!

Hmmm, pear would be lovely and actually we have some pears which refuse to ripen. Thats tomorrows breakfast sorted then.

cara I find bf very calming. As soon as dd latches on and starts suckling I a wave of relaxtion. No wonder I am not keen to stop yet!

Pics sorted...but I'll hide them again later and figure out this mumsnet mates thing.

Thanks for joining my other thread guys

greensnail · 15/10/2009 13:45

Hooray - lovely pics, very cute and she looks like a real character Love the newborn one too, sends my hormones racing!

The bfing making you sleepy thing has never really worked for me either, I seem to be going through a real phase of insomnia at the moment - DD had a really quick feed (about 40seconds) at 12.45 last night and i was awake for hours afterwards!

cara I think i'm about 6.5 weeks, but will have to wait for dating scan to know for sure as i think i may have ovulated either late or early in my cycle, as I didn't think we'd "done the deed" on what I though would be my fertile days. I had a sudden realisation last night of all the bad bits of pregnancy, and wondering how i'm going to cope with DD when I'm huge. Feeling a bit better about it all this morning though.

Hulla sounds like you're on a promise for tonight then I suppose you need to be a bit more creative when you're co-sleeping. Hope you're efforts get rewarded

Sospan · 15/10/2009 13:50

Hulla - lovely pics! . I love the 'just born' one. I'll join your BF thread too.

We are just back from a few days away and I'm pleased to report that Baby Sos is back to full eating strength after being ill and grizzly for a couple of weeks. Phew! He's also started to really like pasta now too (double phew!) which is handy as we eat loads of it.

Hope all the babies are now feeling better / have stopped being weird with food. Kiwi - maybe your DD just really likes practicing her pincer grip?! I know it sounds stupid (and obvious!) but have you thought about cutting up other food into smaller pieces just to give her a bit of variety?

JumeirahJane · 15/10/2009 13:52

Thanks for all the advice re drinks with meals, she has a cup, but still hasn't voluntarily drunk from it, prefers the bm before/after. But it's there if she wants it.

gs - glad your family are recovering from the lurgy.

Hi Hulla, and congrats on DD crawling, even if not ideal timing . Apple is one of our early successes, as I lightly stew chunky slices just enough so she can gnaw, but not so it's too slippy. But I like the sound of pancakes, and never mind the diet!

So JJJunior has enjoyed a fine homemade pizza this week, and slow-cooked pork ribs with sweet potato, and roast beef with veg! She loves it all - that's my girl. Though I'm amazed at how little actually goes in, I suppose that will change over time as she learns that food also makes her full. A little comes out the other end though, so I know she's not just playing with it. She also quite liked melon and mango.

So, are cooked eggs ok from 6 months or not? I keep reading conflicting advice. Likewise cows milk (a little on oatibix?), kiwi fruit, tomatoes (but we've already tried that in the pizza to no ill effect). If we're too restrictive, she won't end up eating what we do, and it'd be a shame to miss out on the social aspect of BLW. How careful does one really need to be? Are these things anaphylactic shock territory, or just a sore tummy and a rash around the mouth warning?

She's getting into a happy routine of going to sleep when DH gets in from work, but waking just in time to join us for dinner, even if that's quite late. It's great that he can see the BLW in action, even he keeps asking me things that he could find in the book, if only he'd read it

Gotta go, JJJ is blowing wet raspberries at me for attention.

greensnail · 15/10/2009 14:06

JumeirahJane Sounds like you're doing fab. All those food you've mentionned are fine from 6 months (milk with food is fine, but not as a main drink until 12 months). If you're worried about allergies then introduce them slowly one at a time (we never worried, and DD has no problems with any of them - I think DD had a rash with tomatoes once, but they're her absolute number one fave at the moment!)

KiwiPanda - I think Sospan might have a good point about cutting things up smaller for babyPanda if you haven't already tried it. I've noticed babySnail seems to like food cut into smaller pieces now too, rather than big pieces to bite into.

KiwiPanda · 15/10/2009 14:22

Yup we use all those things too - DD eays quite a lot of eggs, we often have scrambled for breakfast.

Sospan and Snail I think you have a good point, I'm going to start thinking of things I can cut up smaller - like pasta pieces cut up smaller which worked really well the other day. She's clearly just showing off her pincer grip

She has also in the last couple of days offering us pieces of food from her plate which is VERY cute. She fed DH his omelette this morning.. Perhaps she wants to start Parent Led Weaning and we are cramping her style

greensnail · 15/10/2009 15:57

KiwiPanda DD also likes offering us food off her plate. She thinks its absolutely hilarious if i eat the food out of her hand, soo cute

DrCosyTiger · 15/10/2009 20:33

Oh kiwi and gs that's soooo cute about your LOs feeding you! JJ I've done most of the things you've mentioned with 7 month DD to no ill effects. She wasn't too impressed with scrambled eggs - a shame as DH made them for her specially and his feelings were hurt - but loves tomatoes.

greensnail · 15/10/2009 20:40

DrCosyTiger Don't give up with the scrambled eggs. DD was very suspicious of them for ages (I think it was the texture she wasn't sure of) but we had them again last week and she loved them, I had to give her some more off my plate!

cara2244 · 15/10/2009 20:46

Jane I wasn't very careful at all with BB, and we've had no bad effects. He occasionally used to get redness round the mouth, but nothing major. He had strawberries, oranges, tomatoes and cooked egg at 6-7 months old and was fine. I think because they're eating so little with BLW, major allergic reactions are less likely (that's just my opinion though, not scientific!!)

I finally found a use for those bloomin' ice cube trays you feel the need to buy when you have a baby. I put small foods - raisins, rice krispies, cornflakes, chopped dried apricot - in the sections and let BB pick them out. Kept him entertained for ages.

gs just think how much less scary it will be this time round! And so wonderful at the end.

BB likes to feed me too, very cute

Great pics Hulla

greensnail · 16/10/2009 15:59

We had a very classy lunch out at sainsbury's today, and DD spent most of the time very happily munching on a whole apple! I'd bitten a few little bits off for her and put them on her tray, then plonked the apple down too to see what she made of it. She immediately picked it up and bit into it - the intact side, not the one i'd already started - and happily munched away on it for ages. She looked very cute I'll post some pics if i ever manage to work out how to get the photos off my phone!

KiwiPanda · 16/10/2009 20:41

Aw Snail that's so cute! DD had a really good supper tonight for the first time in AGES, we are at my PIL so perhaps she prefer my MILs cooking! She wolfed down some veggie shepherd's pie, green beans and an adaption of Hullas pancakes which I made for pud. Hooray !

greensnail · 16/10/2009 20:53

Oh I'm so pleased she's eating better KiwiPanda I was thinking of you when we were having our tea this evening, we were having bolognese and I was wondering whether babyPanda would enjoy some veggie mince as that's little pieces to pick up!

DrCosyTiger · 16/10/2009 21:17

Hi Kiwi my DD had veggie shepherds pie tonight too - a big hit. Really pleased for you that it wasn't raisins and peas again. Hulla have just ordered apples from Tesco so we can try your pancakes on the weekend, they sound fab.

FeatheredHeart · 16/10/2009 23:12

About to start BLW proper with ds2. DS1 has a tripptrapp and was puree / spoonfed but from seeing a few tentative goes recently with melon, banana and stirfried veg I think we are going to need a proper highchair with tray and a lip around it for ds2.

I've seen these plastic yellow / white / red ones in lots of cafes/restaurants but keep forgetting / losing the name of it when I get home and don't seem to be able to find out on retail/ consumer websites so maybe it's sold mostly to businesses. It's quite chunky, doesn't seem to fold, is very wipeable and has a large tray (Oh, and it may have blue in it too).

I really want to get something on Sunday. I know it's a flaky ask but does anyone know what the one I'm thinking of might be?

cara2244 · 17/10/2009 13:54

Ikea Antilop? It's about 15 quid.

greensnail · 17/10/2009 14:12

Not sure if its the Ikea Antilop you've seen, as whenever i've seen them they've been plain white - but they certainly do meet your description and are a great high chair for a fab price.
If you want something a bit more like the tripptrapp and have money to spend then we have the svan which is a fab chair and we love it. We got it as a present though, I think if we were paying we would have gone for the ikea one

DrCosyTiger · 17/10/2009 15:00

Hi Feathered, I think it's probably the Ikea Antilop too. We have the Svan like Greensnail, mainly because we had to buy a chair DD could sit it while wearing a harness that kept her legs apart while her hip was dislocated (it's fine now). The Svan is great - brilliant plastic tray and really comfy - but v expensive. It can be tricky to clean too - the fabric seat on ours is getting v messy. If I was buying now I'd probably just get an Antilop.

greensnail · 17/10/2009 15:03

DrCosyTiger the seat cushions wash really well and dry quickly, ours are often in the wash but come up perfect. I keep wanting to not replace the cushions and let her sit on just the wood but DH worries she'd be uncomfy

DrCosyTiger · 17/10/2009 15:35

Oh can you wash the cushion?! I didn't realise ...

Sospan · 17/10/2009 16:04

We've got an Antilop - it's great and really easy to clean. The tray is good as it comes round the side a bit too - very useful for DS as he likes to swoop his food around. They come in white, blue or red (but the trays are only in white).

We also have a Phil & Teds "Me too" (one of those ones you clip to the table) which is great but DS is far too messy to actually eat in it so I sit him in that whilst I cook/clean up and then in the Antilop for eating. The change of scenery seems to stop him whining for a bit too!

greensnail · 17/10/2009 19:38

Lol - go and stick it in the wash now!

DrCosyTiger · 17/10/2009 20:30

Done! Moving swiftly on ... Hulla we made your apple pancakes tonight, well DH did while I tried to catch the handfuls of shepherds pie DD was flinging round the room. They are great and DD loved them. We might put a pinch of cinnamon in next time.
