Anyone just started, or about to start, BLW? Care to join me?

1000 replies

Jojay · 03/05/2009 16:46

DS2 is 27 weeks and from last week, is now joining us a mealtimes.

I tried spoonfeeding for a few days but he didn't seem keen, so I tried him with some roasted veg and he was well away. So BLW it is for us.

But I did purees for DS1 2 years ago, so BLW is new to me.

So far he's had roasted sweet potato, carrot, aubergine, courgette, sweet pepper, some lightly steamed apple and pear, banana, mango, and a chip.

When I say 'had' I mean I've offered it to him. Some probably went straight on the floor, but I've found some lumps in his nappy, so some is definitely going in.

The mango was the biggest hit - he loved it!

So tell me what you're doing and how it's going...........

Peanut butter was 'allowed' even with dd 3 yrs ago aitch! Unless you're an allergicky family, natch.

Chulita · 14/05/2009 20:32

Heheh...dd is quicker than I am. Couldn't be bothered to cook anything tonight so made up some quick baby porridge. She had about 5 spoons and then refused to open up. As I was rinsing her bowl out I helped myself to a large portion of rhubarb cake I made earlier - cue lots of excited wriggling/arm waving/grunts of exertion from dd. So yea, upshot is she was biting full on chunks of rhubarb cake but was soooo not interested in baby food!! [sigh] takes after her dad in the cake/biscuit dept. Oooh!! chunks of banana and bits of broccoli poo today [over-excited dance followed by gloves-on nappy rinse]

AitchTwoOh · 14/05/2009 20:35

i think perhaps she's telling you something, chulita...

really, csws? on the jock nhs book it says to avoid i'm fairly sure.

CantSleepWontSleep · 14/05/2009 20:39

That's the scots for you .
I may be wrong, but it'd be a rare thing .

AitchTwoOh · 14/05/2009 20:42

they positively encourage deep-fried mars bar from 6 mos...

Chulita · 14/05/2009 20:51

Last week HV said I could give DD smooth PB at 6mths as long as there's no history of allergy...

AitchTwoOh · 14/05/2009 21:06

oh really? i remain unconvinced that the advice has formally changed given that the LEAP study hasn't published afaia.

pushmepullyou · 14/05/2009 21:31

Hello, please may I join?

My DD is 24 weeks so not properly started yet, but we've been giving her bits of food to play with in her high chair when we're eating and some of it is going in!

So far she likes broccoli, kiwi, strawberry and Jersey royals .

(and a naughty chip )

Jojay · 15/05/2009 08:48

This link from the FSA has a list of foods to avoid before one. It says the following:

'Nuts
Don?t give any whole nuts, including peanuts, to children under five because they could cause choking'

'Peanut allergy
Peanut allergy seems to be increasing among children, although it is not yet known why. Children from families with a history of allergy are most at risk. If your baby's immediate family has any allergies, asthma or eczema (if they are what is known as 'atopic') the following may help reduce the risk of your baby developing this life-threatening allergy:

You might want to avoid eating peanuts or peanut products while you are breastfeeding
wait until your child is at least three years old before you give any peanuts, or foods containing peanuts, peanut (groundnut) oil or peanut butter
Read ingredients lists carefully and, if youre in doubt, avoid the products'

We are sufficiently atopic in our family to avoid nuts until both ds's are older, though I confess to eating nuts sometimes while pregnant and breastfeeding.

And welcome Pushmepullyou - it sounds like your DD is going to love BLW!

RachieW · 15/05/2009 09:56

Hi Pushmepullyou- love your name, is it Alice in Wonderland?

Thanks for the list Jojay- it's the same in the BLW book, which is reassuring. I did well done scrambled eggs for breakfast but he only ate a bit, I think like some of the other babies he's not really into breakfast yet.

Very exciting today, kiwi seeds in the nappy, food is being eaten!

pushmepullyou · 15/05/2009 11:22

Thanks Rachie. It's Doctor Doolittle - a childhood fave as had far too many pets

A isn't keen on breakfast either but has had avocado and mango as mid morning snack today. Much excitement for both - opening and closing her mouth hopefully whilst she waited for me to cut her anothe 'finger'

AitchTwoOh · 15/05/2009 12:40

that fsa thing is as clear as mud...

SydneyB · 15/05/2009 15:14

Just wondered - have been staying clear of apple other than grated because seems like choking risk to me. Is there anything else people are avoiding? DS grabbed some raw red pepper of my plate earlier and I took it back as thought a hard lump could easily break off. Am I being too cautious? He's 7 months now and pretty adept.

AitchTwoOh · 15/05/2009 15:24

i only worried about apple, tbh. i always figured that red pepper would be held on by the skin... but who can say? just be as cautious as you need to be, i say.

Jojay · 15/05/2009 15:28

I've lightly steamed it when I've given apple, but I probably would give him raw pepper.

Saying that, my DS doesn't swallow much yet, or seem to gag too much, so perhaps I'm too relaxed?

No interest in breakfast but he had cucumber sticks and Organix crisps for lunch today - not the best but we were at soft play with Ds1 and some pals and it was the best I could come up with at short notice. He enjoyed the cucumber and the crisps dyed his face orange.

There were some ladies on a table next to me who were saying 'isn't he doing well with that cucumber?'

A friend was with us, with her 9 month old baby and she was fiddling around heating up pots of mush and asked me if I had a plastic spoon she could borrow - er, no!!

She was trying to entertain her toddler while spoonfeeding the baby saying, 'come on, one more mouthful' to the baby.

I was SO glad we're doing it this way

SydneyB · 15/05/2009 15:36

Yeah, you're both right, follow your instincts I reckon. Jojay - had same at lunch with friends in cafe today. Plonked DS in highchair, gave him a pile of what DD and I were having - jkt potato with cheese/tuna etc and left 'em to it whilst one friend of mine had hers on lap trying to get spoon in and manage toddler. Hurrah for BLW . But guilt at mess left in cafe...

Jojay · 15/05/2009 15:43

Yes, I did get through half a pack of wipes cleaning up the highchair, the floor, DS2......

OP posts:
Chulita · 15/05/2009 15:59

I was wondering about cucumber Jojay, how does he do with that? I thought the skin might be a bit tough...

Jojay · 15/05/2009 16:25

He hasn't got through the skin yet, but manages to get some of the soft inside bit off. He just sucked it to begin with though.

OP posts:
RachieW · 15/05/2009 18:04

Ds loves cucumber too, I cheat a bit and give him sticks so he has the soft side and the skin side. He trys to chew both. He had carrot sticks and green beans at lunch, both steamed but wasn't really bothered. He loved his tiny taste of apple cake though, typical

Jojay · 15/05/2009 19:39

I do cucumber in sticks too.

Roasted veggies for supper tonight - I did them in with ours so they had olive oil, balsamic vinegar, basil and garlic with them - they went down much better than the plain ones My boy obviously has sophisticated tastes!

We also had our first attempt at loaded spoons of yoghurt - the mess was indescribable but he loved it. I did spoon a bit in when he was getting frustrated, but all in all a successful tea time.

SydneyB · 15/05/2009 20:00

My god - DS now skins chunks of mango in seconds. He is like a piranah. Give him chunk of mango with skin. Hear suck suck suck sound, turn round, skin on floor, mango gone, juice dribbling out of gurgling mouth! Tried some left over burger today too which is pretty much the first bit of meat he's had. Seemed curious but not over enamoured with it.

Have noticed that he's taking less at milk feeds but still needing the same number of them each day - i.e 5-6 bottles. But he is now drinking bits of water from his cup at meal/snack times so perhaps he's not needing as much as hydration. Is anyone else noticing less milk? Obviously those not breastfeeding.

Chulita · 15/05/2009 20:15

What do people put on the floor under their LOs? My carpet's covered in broccoli and yoghurt cos I've run out of newspaper

Jojay · 15/05/2009 20:28

Sydney - I'm bfing, but I think ds's feeds are getting shorter though still as frequent, which implies he's doing the same sort of thing as your lo. not sure why though, as he doesn't really drink yet. Maybe he's eating more than I think he is.

Chulita - I have laminate in my kitchen
