Before I started weaning my twins, I read about BLW and thought it looked like an amazing idea.

When I tried it I found my darling LOs didn't pick up a single thing never mind get it into the mouths.

So now I puree food and spoonfeed them and they are eating massive amounts and loving it - and sleeping all night!

So I thought I'd start a thread for others who are doing the same as me - we can swap ideas for meals and say what works for us (ie what makes them sleep ).

I gave my twins four plums plus ebm and baby rice for breakfast and they have had a big bowl of sweet potato, haricot beans and brocolli for lunch. More of the same for tea (plus maybe some swede and parsnip). They are 6.5mths old.

What did yours eat today?

Hey everyone

Sorry for disappearing. Weaning & pureeing have been going well But have been more preoccupied with the moving-DS-to-his-own-room malarkey recently. It's been going well, more or less. But he has gone back to having one bf in the night (around 4.30) which he had dropped previously & was sleeping 11-6. So I'm now bf-ing at that point (with the goal to just get him used to his room for now) & then he wakes at 6.40 or so, at which point we take him to our bed () & then we all have a lie-in / sleep until 7.45 or so (this has happened in the last 3 nights). So it's not going great, but not bad either, we're happy that he hasn't been waking for long periods of time, although of course it's more than it was before. Or at least more than we were aware before, because of course when he was in our bed lots of things (e.g. dummy replugging) just happened in our sleep!

How's everyone's else sleep situation going?

Anyway. On to pureeing news. First of all, welcome to new people coming to the thread! Hope you enjoy it here, it's a pretty nice & easygoing thread!

As for sulphur in dried fruit. I've also given dried apricots which were a hit (I mixed them with pear, baby rice & milk). I got organic ones which were kind of brownish in colour (very different from the bright orange sulphur-treated ones). Don't really know why non-sulphur ones are better (maybe about asthma) but in any case, they went down fine. Today I even managed to give DS some banana (with greek yoghurt) which finally was a hit, because so far he seemed to hate hate hate banana (weird but true). But today, not sure why, he ate it all & smacked his lips throughout the whole experience with pleasure!

Oh about the moulis. I got one (silly me) & only used one time, to sieve sweet potato. Big mistake. It's SUCH a faff to use a mouli, & swore never again. So since then I've been happily blending everything in my food processor, regardless of whether AK says it needs to be moulied or not (what's the worse that can happen after all if something that's supposed to be moulied is actually processed?!)

Better go to sleep, it's already 23.10. Good night to everyone, hope all your babies sleep through (yeah right).

mookickkick · 20/02/2009 09:51

Morning all! How was the sleep Maria? No sleeping through here. Night before dd had eaten too much and was uncomfortable and kept waking. Last night she woke up looking for a feed. Goldilocks!

Anyway, am about to try bread for the first time. Would you toast pitta? DD likes rice cakes.

giantkatestacks · 20/02/2009 14:45

Toast is much easier than bread as it doesnt wad up in their mouths so much.

bitofadramaqueen · 20/02/2009 15:33

Yeah toasted bread/pitta better to start with.

After extensive research aka checking the labels at corner shop, our usual wholemeal bread has lower salt than usual White so we'll stick to that for DS.

Thanks re sulphur Kate - I'll err on the side of caution.

mookickkick · 20/02/2009 16:29

Thanks Kate and BDQ! Btw got wholemeal as that is what I prefer (and I eat all the leftovers ). If this works then sandwiches next!

Maria2007 · 23/02/2009 19:33

Hey where has everyone disappeared?

Hope everyone's ok. We're progressing with the weaning... we've started protein (a very basic chicken casserole- DS didn't really take to it- and a very basic red lentil dish- he liked it more). Any other ideas about easy protein meals? Do you actually cook whole meals or do you do just, say, a chicken breast & add to that vegetable cubes?

Really posting though to bump our thread up... as it's getting dangerously low on the weaning board .

Oooh just one more question before I forget. I made a (frozen) raspberry & pear puree which I've put in the freezer, & is now in ice cubes. My DS is 6 & a half months, almost 7 months. Is he ready for berries or is there an allergy risk?

bitofadramaqueen · 23/02/2009 21:23
  • I'm still here Maria

Re: protein meals, I tend to make up the whole meal and have pretty much given up on individual cubes. DS tends to get a protein meal at lunch and a veggie meal in the evening. I think the protein taste is very strong when you're not used to it, so the veg in the meal should be of bigger quantity than the meat IFSWIM?

I've been using mainly AK recipes up till now. In the freezer ATM we have chicken with sweet potato and apple, chicken casserole, lamb hotpot, beef casserole (this was one we made for ourselves - just seperated it from ours and used baby friendly stock), chicken in tomato sauce, cod with sweet potato (and some orange juice), some pasta dishes, cauliflower cheese and some other veggie meals.

Now that I've got a bit of a stock of meals in the freezer, I just usually do a couple of recipes each week to top up.

I've given berries already but we're pretty low risk of allergies so I wouldn't like to say yay or nay.

Can I ask about cottage cheese? HAs anyone found a full fat one that doesn't have added salt?

giantkatestacks · 23/02/2009 22:16

I think you should be ok with raspberries Maria although my ds was allergic to strawberries until he was about 2 - properly allergic not just intolerant.

I would try it at lunchtime at least and with no new other things so that it doesnt interfere with the sleeping - not that the sleeping is going that well is it

other protein meals we had were a basic lamb casserole and some 'fish pie' which was just white fish poached in water then deboned and deskinned and whizzed and frozen on its own - I would do 2 of that and 2 mash and 1 pea. iyswim.

I dont know about cottage cheese - we stick to cream cheese and mature cheddar.

mookickkick · 24/02/2009 10:15

We've had berry purees in yoghurt without any problems Maria.

Kate, fish pie is a huge hit here. Or rather, was. DD has a cold and is a bit off her food. And sleep. I'm so tired zzzz...

Quick question about colds and routines [out the window]: if they are up all night BFing and wake up late, what do you do about meals? DD only had half her porridge this morning, which was more than I'd expected, frankly. More milk when they are poorly?

giantkatestacks · 24/02/2009 11:05

When we have got a cold the milk feeds go up and the food goes down though sometimes the milk goes down as well and dd doesnt want anything at all.

I would keep on offering the food and see what happens - yoghurt and avocado though - easy foods I reckon.

bitofadramaqueen · 24/02/2009 20:29

I agree with kate - easy food and let your DD take whatever she wants.

DH made the tomato soup from Jamie's ministry of food cookbook yesterday and we did a seperate portion for DS with baby stock and DS loved it.

neenztwinz · 24/02/2009 21:26

I'm still here - still feeding the DTs lots of sweet potato!

OP posts:
giantkatestacks · 24/02/2009 22:44

lol neenz - I've just got this image of you surrounded by your twins and mountains of sweet potatoes.

I am stuck foodwise atm - no inspiration whatsoever. I need to start feeding my dd all the really healthy things I did with my ds - like tinned mackerel etc but I just cant be arsed

Though the homemade fishfingers at the weekend went down well.

potatoes · 25/02/2009 10:41

Hello can i join?
Just wondered if anyone else has a baby with a sweet tooth - weaning was going fantastically, DS ate everything and tried to feed himself, then he hit 6m and I gave him weetabix with banana for breakfast and fromage frais and now he doesn't want anything else!!! Still offering him veg etc but he pulls a face like he's been given a spoonful of poison! Not remotely interested in finger foods. Is it just another one of those phases...?

potatoes · 25/02/2009 10:46

Ooh and sorry another question, i have optimistically bought some plums to try but what's the best thing to do with them to make them taste nice?
PS. It is lovely to see a thread that doesn't rant on about BLW!

mookickkick · 25/02/2009 10:58

hello and welcome potatoes! i think dd also has a sweet tooth. she will eat everything, but is most enthusiastic about breakfast (porridge with fruit), fruit and yoghurt. at the moment she is poorly so i am just glad she is eating anything at all. you can try mixing sweet with savoury until you build up the savoury proportion.

about the plums, as long as they are ripe, i think they should go down well. with nectarines and pears i nuke them in the microwave (just cut in half and place cut side down on a plate) and then mash the flesh with a fork. dd can't get enough, plain or with yoghurt.

Maria2007 · 25/02/2009 11:57

Hi potatoes, welcome.Same here about sweet tooth. My DS looooves fruit & yoghurt & only tolerates veg & protein. I'm starting to think I should try some combinations, e.g chicken with apple, that kind of thing.

arthymum · 25/02/2009 12:13

Hello again. Haven't posting for a while as DS has been happily scoffing back the root vegetable mountain in our freezer. About to start him on green veg now...exciting times

He is 6 months on Friday so going to gradually introduce wheat, dairy, protein etc. Was also thinking about finger foods - what is good for a 6 month old? Obviously, not being a BLW-er, I'm terrified of him choking.

Also, I have a real problem getting milk (BF) down DS in the day - as he is so nosey. Then he wakes up in the middle of the night for a nice long feed or two, grrr! He will drink from a cup but don't really want to faff about with formula unless I have to. Does anyone else have/had this problem?

Plums go down well here - nice ripe ones, I took the skins off and cooked for a few minutes. He likes them best with porridge - apricots also a hit.

giantkatestacks · 25/02/2009 18:51

At 6 months we were doing toast fingers and butter, florets of broccoli, roasted sweet potato, potato and carrot, banana, peas and sweetcorn mixed with a little bit of cheddar to form lumps, grated cheese...

arthymum - we night weaned dd soon after 6 months when I was sure she wasnt hungry in the night and didnt need it anymore. I think if you cut down at night then it will have a knock on effect of him taking more when he wakes up anyway.

neenztwinz · 25/02/2009 20:21

Hi potatoes, I think sweet tooth is normal! Plums are good peeled and boiled in a little water then whizzed up (without draining the water to retain the nutrients). Add baby rice to thicken if necessary.

Arthymum, I had the same problem with night feeds, I started to BF only in their bedrooms during the day so there were no distractions and then I just stopped feeding them in the night and did CC (that was at 8m). After two nights they were sleeping through (and taking more milk in the day).

Rice cakes and toast were good first finger foods (we haven't really moved on from there actually!).

potatoes · 25/02/2009 20:52

Plums went down very well mixed with a bit of fromage frais hurrah! Guess I'll just keep trying veg and lots of different fruit etc, no point getting worried so early on...

Arthymum, think i may have been on a sleep forum with you a few weeks ago, I have just persuaded DS to drop night feed by just not feeding him basically - but then i was completely sure he was waking from habit not hunger. It took 3 really difficult nights but well worth it, I just shushed him with my hand on his tummy for ages (2 hours!!!) - he has now slept 7.30-7.30 for nearly 3 weeks and it's bliss.

arthymum · 25/02/2009 21:22

Hello again, potatoes - that was the Will my DS ever just sleep through thread? You've done well then! Things are a lot better for us after a spell of growth spurts, colds and teething (we have a little tooth now, bless!) so think I will just wait until he's established on three good meals a day and DH is off work then go down the shh-pat route if no change. Then maybe he'll eat his BF breakfast for once...

Mind you, Neenztwinz, he slept a blinder the other night after sweet potato for his tea, - you are right, the stuff is magic, lol!

neenztwinz · 25/02/2009 21:28

Lol!!!

Maria2007 · 25/02/2009 21:54

Arthymum- I'll go read the 'will my DS ever just sleep through' thread, as I have the same question: WILL MY DS EVER JUST SLEEP THROUGH'???!!!!

Does it happen girls? Should I hold hope that babies DO sleep through at some point?! He's never ever slept through, the best we managed was 2 weeks of no feeds between 11-6, but even then he would wake for a bit at 5.00 am to whinge. At least we were on the right track, he's dropped the night feed (hurray) but now he's decided he wants it again & wakes every night at 4.00 am, as if he has an internal alarm clock, to bf. I bf him & usually he goes straight back to sleep, but 2 nights ago he also required about half an hour cuddling to sleep.

Oh well. Better to talk about purees, I reckon.

DS's newest habit- puree wise- is whinging / whining through his meal, i.e. when he's eating the veg or protein meal. He knows very well that after the meal he'll get a yoghurt with fruit puree, & only stops whinging when the yoghurt / fruit appears in the horizon! He then proceeds to gobble it up. He does eat quite a bit of the savoury food, but never finishes it, while he always completely finishes the yoghurt. Cheeky monkey!

Maria2007 · 25/02/2009 21:56

By the way, Bitofadramaqueen, you put me to shame! All those meals stocked up in the freezer. You domestic goddess, you!!
