Before I started weaning my twins, I read about BLW and thought it looked like an amazing idea.

When I tried it I found my darling LOs didn't pick up a single thing never mind get it into the mouths.

So now I puree food and spoonfeed them and they are eating massive amounts and loving it - and sleeping all night!

So I thought I'd start a thread for others who are doing the same as me - we can swap ideas for meals and say what works for us (ie what makes them sleep ).

I gave my twins four plums plus ebm and baby rice for breakfast and they have had a big bowl of sweet potato, haricot beans and brocolli for lunch. More of the same for tea (plus maybe some swede and parsnip). They are 6.5mths old.

What did yours eat today?

Hello everyone! I'm trying to lumpify dd's meals, but so far it only works with bananas and avocados. Tried broccoli just now (mixed with rice and milk) and she mostly spat it out. Then mixed in pea puree so she had a bit more, but really wasn't very keen. What kind of lumps do you find most easily acceptable?

Oh, and two logs today and counting...

Off to puree that broccoli!

Maria2007 · 30/01/2009 10:12

Hi girls, good morning

Mookickkick, hurray for the 2 logs They're a bit shocking aren't they?

Girls, I need your advice. My DS is going to be 26 weeks this sunday, & today is day 18 of weaning. He's doing very well- at the moment he has lunch at 11ish (usually 5 cubes of veg puree) & then supper at 5ish (baby rice with milk & 2 cubes fruit). He gobbles down everything I give him & seems to really be enjoying the process. I recently went from 6 teaspoons of baby rice for supper to 7 teaspoons & he still gobbles it up. I have a couple of questions:

  1. He breastfeeds around 7 am, but then he doesn't settle for his 9.00 or 9.30 nap until I give him more milk. Given that he's had a huge breastfeed around 7, I usually don't have enough milk to breastfeed him again at 9.30, & I end up having to give a formula top-up. After the breastfeed & top-up he settles down in his cot & sleeps. Do you think these are signs that maybe he's ready for breakfast? I mean, if I give some fruit after his 7 am breastfeed, is it likely to make a difference? I really am not keen to give formula top-ups during the day (on top of the 11 pm formula bottle) so any advice would be welcome...

  2. When do we introduce protein? I'm working through the Gina Ford plan, and I'm now jumping ahead to her 6months+ plan, just to go at a slightly quicker pace (because up till now I've been careful in introducing things gradually & one by one). I'm planning to wait a bit more... any ideas about when is a good time?

  3. When would you give some finger foods? I bought some Hipp organic rusks... but the packet says give them from 10 months onwards. I'm keen to give him something to start playing with, but is it maybe a bit too early still?

OK, hope you're all having a good friday & speak soon...

giantkatestacks · 30/01/2009 10:43

hi there Maria - hows you?

  1. I would introduce some baby porridge and fruit puree about 8am maybe. 2)we did it at 30 weeks but then we started at 26 - I would say about 3-4 weeks after you start should be ok - its upto you though, I dont really think it matters that much.
  2. we did finger foods almost straight away becuase it was obvious my dd could chew pretty well and was happy with them - toast was good, as were lumps of boiled potato etc. I wouldnt go with rusks cos they're sugary.
alittlebitshy · 30/01/2009 12:25

rice cakes?

neenztwinz · 30/01/2009 13:10

Just try it and see if he likes it Amber. You can't go wrong really. I have done savoury dipped in yogurt and E eats it and doesn't seem to mind the taste. Somtimes she will only open her mouth when the yogurt is tapped against her lips. Have you tried that?

OP posts:
neenztwinz · 30/01/2009 13:14

Maria, yes definitely give him breakfast. Fruit and baby rice always went down well here at 6m and now I give them oat porridge with fruit. About an hour after the BF.

I wouldn't bother with rusks - a bit sugary - rice cakes would be better, or toast, cucumbers, steamed carrots etc.

bitofadramaqueen · 30/01/2009 13:42

Just to echo everyone else maRIA - go for it with breakfast. At 7am I give DS his milk first and breakfast straight after (I dont leave a gap - I would maybe try with and without a gap and see what works best for you), then he has a little play time before 9/9.30 ish nap.

DS likes rice cakes, toast, banana for finger foods.

For breakfast he has oatibix or Plum super porridge and I usually mix some mashed banana or fruit puree with it. Sometimes he gets toast with mashed banana instead (usually at the weekend when breakfast is a more leisurely affair).

HAve to run, sorry not to say hi to anyone else!

mookickkick · 30/01/2009 16:26

hi everyone! maria, we've just finished a week of porridge with fruit puree for breakfast. dd eats whatever i give her so i'm going to ramp it up up up. we started with organix creamy porridge with apple. have just bought plum super porridge. i know you can use plain old 'adult' oats but i'm too lazy in the morning. your little one will love breakfast, i'm sure!

mookickkick · 30/01/2009 16:27

oh, and we have a one-hour gap between first bf and breakfast.

Maria2007 · 31/01/2009 15:28

Hi girls, hope you're all well & having a good weekend. Thanks for the advice on breakfast, I offered banana with ebm around 8 am today & he then didn't need a top-up at 9.30 before his nap, so that was an improvement. So I'm happy to say we're now on 3 meals a day! Bit quicker than I thought it would be...but I'm ok with that because I feel ds is responding so well.

Question: I want to start giving yoghurt for breakfast. What type do you use? Is Greek yoghurt (e.g. Total) ok? Or are there special baby yoghurts?

giantkatestacks · 31/01/2009 16:40

Maria - hi there...am off to the cinema tonight woo hoo - managed to get some babysitting...

um we just started out with Yeo Valley natural and added fruit puree and now just give it on its own - sounds harsh but if you start with the fromage frais and other sugary ones then you'll always have to give them - my 5 year old ds still happily has the yeo valley with honey or raisins same as us. Sorry if other people think this is a bit pretentious - am very tight see and refuse to buy separate kids yoghurts and sometimes we make our own...

am not a lentil weaver tho honest.

Maria2007 · 31/01/2009 17:41

Didn't sound lentil-weavery to me! Will also use natural yoghurt then, makes sense. (Plus, I love it for myself & we always have some in the flat).

Going out to the movies: brilliant! What are you watching. Am also going out tonight for a meal & drinks with a friend, dp will be looking after (sleeping) ds.

bitofadramaqueen · 02/02/2009 16:45

Natural yoghurt is good, and you can get some baby yoghurts that aren't full of junk. Both Plum and Rachel's little organics do them. Handy size for out and about.

neenztwinz · 02/02/2009 22:27

lol Kate!! Me too - but it is not just the price it is the sugar too . My sisters roll their eyes at me cos I won't use Little Stars or Petis Filous so i think it does seem a bit much but I wouldn't eat those yogurts so don't see the point in giving them to the DTs. I mix 2dsp of Yeo Valley Natural yogurt with 2dsp of a fruit puree jar (like Hipp Organic or Organix ones). When I put pureed pears or similar in they weren't keen. And they were not keen on natural yogurt on its own.

They had half a cod fillet and parsnip for lunch today and wolfed it. And they had Lorraine Kelly risotto yesterday and liked that too (not a sweet potato in sight ). They are having their food really lumpy now too and are doing really well with the finger food (most of it gets eaten now not on the floor!) They are 9mo this week

giantkatestacks · 02/02/2009 22:41

sounds good neenz - its frightening where the time has gone isnt it? My dd absolutely demolished a fish pie on saturday and today had pasta bolognaise - I love that the whole family are often all eating the same thing now.

btw - are yours crawling - mine is up on all fours and pivoting and moving backwards but not forwards at all - my ds was much quicker - though I know I shouldnt compare obviously.

Essie3 · 03/02/2009 20:10

Neenz, you might be able to help the woman with twins on here - 'told to increase the amount of food' thread!

neenztwinz · 03/02/2009 22:29

Thanks Essie, I have gone storming in there on that one all guns blazing as usual.

I have posted on a couple of weaning threads tonight actually... I know I really shouldn't do that

OP posts:
Maria2007 · 04/02/2009 09:01

Neenz, I think it's great that you post on the weaning threads. Always nice to have a nice hot blooded debate .

Hope everyone is ok? Our thread is a bit quiet these days... Come on lets liven it up. So just to let you know we had a constipation issue in the last week (I think due to me being far too enthusiastic with the baby rice & overloading DS). But with some prune puree & pear puree it's now cleared. And when I say it's cleared, IT'S CLEARED! Believe it or not DS yesterday pooed 6-7 times . The whole day was a poo-a-thon.

On other pureeing news (!), today I introduced ready-brek cereal with some EBM & pear puree. Being overly enthusiastic (again), I made far too much & of course DS ate just a little bit & was satisfied. There goes all my lovely EBM down the drain...

giantkatestacks · 04/02/2009 09:08

I gave up with the readybrek/instant oats cos they were just exploding everywhere in the microwave and have retreated to the plum porridge - yes neenz I know very cowardly and expensive...

neenztwinz · 04/02/2009 09:09

Hate it when that happens Maria. Are you still getting quite a bit out by expressing? Once the DTs started on solids I found it quite difficult to get enough and was too lazy so just bought formula to add to their food.

OP posts:
giantkatestacks · 04/02/2009 11:20

I just use cows milk now...

neenztwinz · 04/02/2009 14:29

Yeah me too Kate. Much easier!

OP posts:
mookickkick · 04/02/2009 15:00

Good afternoon everyone! DH caught the norovirus so I was sort of a single mum to two babies -- good thing they could eat the same purees .

Maria we had a poo crisis as well. Pellets. Ugh. So I also toned down the rice and increased water intake. Now have the old sludge again.

Does anyone have any insight into sleep and weaning? DD slept through for about a week about two weeks ago and ever since has been all over the place. Once I had to get up 3 times.

neenztwinz · 04/02/2009 17:48

Ooh, Mookickkick, don;t get me started! This is a real 'thing' of mine, cos everyone on MN is convinced that food has nothing to do with sleep. I don't agree, but I think sleep has a lot to do with a lot of things, and food is only one of them.

How old if your LO? What exactly is she eating and how much milk is she drinking? Can she settle herself to sleep? Does she have regular naps in the day? How long does she sleep for in the day?

OP posts:
giantkatestacks · 04/02/2009 17:57

Mookickkick - now you've done it... just dont ask about the oatabix as well
