Before I started weaning my twins, I read about BLW and thought it looked like an amazing idea.

When I tried it I found my darling LOs didn't pick up a single thing never mind get it into the mouths.

So now I puree food and spoonfeed them and they are eating massive amounts and loving it - and sleeping all night!

So I thought I'd start a thread for others who are doing the same as me - we can swap ideas for meals and say what works for us (ie what makes them sleep ).

I gave my twins four plums plus ebm and baby rice for breakfast and they have had a big bowl of sweet potato, haricot beans and brocolli for lunch. More of the same for tea (plus maybe some swede and parsnip). They are 6.5mths old.

What did yours eat today?

I think you freeze them without skins. But not sure!!

Does anyone else feel like chucking themselves off the edge of a cliff at the thought of doing another bloody batch of cooking! DH is meant to be taking DD to pils on Sunday so I can have a break but am running out of food so need to do lots of cooking!

neenztwinz · 23/01/2009 22:12

It's not the cooking that does it for me but the endless tidying/washing/sweeping up! I enjoy the cooking (don;t do much in advance though)

giantkatestacks · 23/01/2009 22:30

I must confess re the roasting veggies that we have them most nights as am very lazy and like food that all goes in the oven at the same time - ie sausage and roasted sweet potato wedges, chicken thighs and butternut squash etc so there is mostly always something at dinner time that dd can have.

maybe I'm just weird but dont mind the cooking - i do a lot of it anyway and it doesnt seem to make much difference...was a bit naughty and gave dd a homemade parmesan cheese straw this evening just cos she was whiny...and it had egg in it...doh.

neenztwinz · 23/01/2009 22:40

I am really struggling with finger food... they are nearly 9m now so should be having more, but all they will eat is rice cakes. I offer them cucumber, toast... er that's about it. But then I am a bit averse to giving them finger foods cos they won't eat it but then it is a vicious circle cos if I don't offer it they won't eat it. Can I just carry on spoonfeeding for a while longer please? I do have twins you know!

OP posts:
pudding25 · 23/01/2009 22:56

Oh god, the cleaning...AAAAH.

I know what you mean about finger foods. DD has toast, mini sandwiches, rice cakes and organix crisps. She happily stuffs her face with all those things. If I give her fruit or veg as finger foods, she chucks it on the floor. She wouldn't eat her little pot of organix fruit mush today so I spread it on rice cakes and she licked tons of it off.

Neenz -you can spoon feed twins until they are at least 15 surely

neenztwinz · 23/01/2009 23:04

LOL Pudding! I hope so. E was refusing to be spoonfed today but she did lick some puree off a rice cake so that was good.

OP posts:
giantkatestacks · 24/01/2009 11:29

will they eat cheese in thin strips neenz - that was a really early hit here and you just have to grab it out of the fridge - ditto tortilla wraps - this is mostly supper though so the meal where the milk comes after.

can they not just have some of what you're having for lunch/dinner?what about pasta?

pudding25 · 24/01/2009 13:26

Tortilla wraps sounds a good idea. I tried cheese and it got chucked on the floor. I tried broccoli today, she took one look at it and chucked it. She then grabbed her lunch bowl when DH wasn't looking and chucked it everywhere.

If DD was to have what I had for lunch today, she would have had some crisps and dry cereal (tesco shop on order

neenztwinz · 24/01/2009 14:43

Yeah I had bacon butties for lunch... not so good for babies. How thin is thin Kate? I do baton sticks of cheese but they just ignore it. I gave them cheese on toast today and T sucked on a bit of it but E ignored it. I wonder if they are just not hungry at lunch cos they eat so much at breakfast (20g porridge oats plus 10g quinoa cooked in milk with 2-3tbs prunes and a banana mashed in). That is between them but it does seem like lots, then they ahve lunch a couple of hours later and a BF in between so no wonder they are not hungry! They eat a bit - I think I just have too high an expectation.

The thing with finger food and giving something I am having is I don't really eat finger food eg I have risotto, chilli etc. Even potato - how do they eat it with their hands? If I put some of their puree on the tray they just smear it round, they don;t try to eat any of it. They will have vegemite on toast but I can;t give them that all the time (can I? )

OP posts:
giantkatestacks · 24/01/2009 15:12

hmm maybe they're just not hungry or maybe they dont like chewing? am not sure what the answer is there - I'm sure the blwners would say that they will do it when they're ready but thats just not very helpful is it.

They can eat boiled potato with their hands and wedges and roast potatoes.

I suppose if they chuck the food then they are not hungry as well - Pudding mine sometimes has dry cereal while I am defrosting some cubes or cooking some pasta - I have given her my ds' rice crispies for example - they go down rather too well.

Neenz - dd will now eat rice off the tray so you could combine that with a spooned puree maybe? The cheese is sort of the same width as a pencil though I started off by putting grated cheese on the tray (I put some in her mouth myself to show her what she was missing first).

neenztwinz · 24/01/2009 17:20

OK, will try that with the grated cheese. And maybe the rice krispies too. Yeah, I am sure they will do it when they are ready and until then there are purees, thank goodness!

Hello all,
Still having my milk dilemma. Will try some cows milk agian this week and see if it was a coincidence!

Dh and i doing a puree-a-thon later on. Got butternut squash and parsnips to do and I intend to grab some carrots and pears too to replenish stocks .

neenztwinz · 25/01/2009 15:48

You can get plastic tubs of pears (plus peaches, prunes, papaya, mango) in the supermarket which are great for pureeing. In the tinned fruit aisle, they are just in juice, no sugar or anything.

OP posts:
alittlebitshy · 25/01/2009 16:00

purre-a-thon not happened yet .

whinegums · 25/01/2009 19:58

Hi, hope you've all had a good weekend.

DQ, if not too late, you can freeze bananas for cooking with or without the skins - so you can make those yummy muffins in the future!

Neenz, I give fruit as finger food - slices of pear, clementine segments, banana etc. Also steamed green beans, pitta bread, rice cakes, toast, cheese, roast parsnips, etc.

B will hardly have any milk during the day now! So I can't see us dropping the night feeds any time soon. It's so frustrating. I offer bf a lot during the day, and just before meal times, hoping he's hungry and he'll take it, but it's almost as if he's saving room for solids. At least I'm getting milk into his food, but it's not enough.

Right, I've got a lovely beef casserole in the oven, just off to make some dumplings to go with it, yum yum.

giantkatestacks · 25/01/2009 20:50

hi all - just a quick one - we did strawberries today because the MIL brought them round (normally would never do them out of season but ho hum) - anyway first we did them crushed but gave up when dd started munching on one whole (she has got three good teeth now which helps no end).

whinegums - god that is frustrating...

Essie3 · 25/01/2009 20:50

Hi all, been lying low after the nastyness on the other thread! But still going with purees here. I made a big batch of mixed veg puree (actually, a little bit because it was frozen veg, but that's still ok isn't it - aren't frozen peas better than fresh or am I kidding myself here?) mixed with milk and rice. He loved it, which is good because I was worried that he was a jar fan. He gets quite a lot of home made though.
But I've been having problems getting it smooth enough. Now, it may be me - too much in my processor (I tried it at my mum's with her hand blender and it was jar-smooth) but when can you start introducing more lumpy food?
I think that particular puree was problematic because the 'lumps' were actually pea skins and pepper skins.

I also tried BLW (or rather finger food) with Iestyn, and it wasn't a great success. I gave him an oatcake - like all the BLW folks go on about - and I swear someone is taking the mick here. He ate some, started gagging. I let him carry on, serious gagging and then he vomited. Is this normal?

Essie3 · 25/01/2009 20:56

Sorry, just been on another thread on weaning - this one. Now, all of them there are saying fine, just let him choke/gag. But Iestyn does this, and I did just let him choke/gag and he vomited!
Is it just me? I don't dare start a thread because all the BLW nasties experts will be onto me.

Maria2007 · 25/01/2009 22:25

Hi again girls,

Essie, how awful about the gagging/vomiting... I don't know what to advise, since we're just now starting weaning... but I think I'd be terrified too! They do say it's normal but to me it sounds very scary. Not sure how I'd deal with it, maybe the others have more advice (GKS for example just wrote she gave her LO a strawberry etc)... I have similar questions about choking hazards, so would be interested to read what the others say.

Alittlebitshy- hi on this thread too I did a puree-a-thon a couple of days ago (parsnips, swede, butternut squash, apples, pears) but now I'm lazy again... there's a bunch of green beans & carrots (and half a butternut squash) I want to do, sitting in the fridge & looking at me as if saying 'come on maria, won't you puree us already!' but to be truthful I'm getting a bit tired by the whole steaming/pureeing/storing thing. Are my Nigella/Annabel-Karmel-ish days coming so soon to an end?

Anyway. Weaning going ok. Today DS ate (not very greedily, I have to say, but still he finished it) swede & sweet potato. And for supper he gobbled up his baby rice, pear & apple. His cold is almost over (nose runny but not blocked anymore) so his appetite is back with a vengeance.

giantkatestacks · 26/01/2009 09:07

essie - how old is Iestyn now? I started straight on lumpy food so didnt struggle so much - a couple of gags when a bit of broccoli has got stuck but no vomiting. I would lumpy up your purees so he gets used to having to chew before you go for the finger food. My dd found strips of buttered toast easier than the rice cake as well at first.

Mashed potato is a good lumpy one for them to have first I think - or a slightly lumpier porridge? They only make the 4-6 month jars completely smooth because of the 4 months thing - if you have started at 6 months I think you can mush and not have runny at all...

Maria - I do a great big load on saturday mornings when dp is around - then I dont have ot do it during the week. Or do some when you cook dinner - then its not as much of a chore.

mookickkick · 26/01/2009 14:06

Ooo, gagging. We've had a few incidents during which DD was calmer than her mummy . I know it's hard Essie but it does seem to be part of the process. I force myself to looked unworried -- which I am sure comes out looking stiff and scarecrow-like. Not sure about vomiting though! That must have been awful.

Well done to you puree-a-thoners! I only managed two batches (dishwasher wasn't working). Tried no-cook avocado but it didn't go down so well. As soon as my bananas are ripe enough I'll try to blend them together.

alittlebitshy · 26/01/2009 16:22

mooki my ds really liked banana and avocado. he loves banans so i guess anything with banana would be a hit

Maria2007 · 26/01/2009 17:24

Mooki & alittlebitshy, am going to try avocado very soon too (maybe I'll mix it with apple puree, as GF suggests). Banana I haven't tried yet... but will do soon. I also want to try papaya (am trying to be adventurous).

giantkatestacks · 26/01/2009 18:16

cor are people meeting up? thats a bit exciting...

btw my dd was a bit lukewarm with avocado at first but will now eat it quite happily.

We did spag bol for the first time tonight -well after dd had already had her main lamb casserole dinner and it went down well - think my days of exciting purees are nearly over... am I still allowed to hang out here?
