General chat thread for puree lovers!

Before I started weaning my twins, I read about BLW and thought it looked like an amazing idea.

When I tried it I found my darling LOs didn't pick up a single thing never mind get it into the mouths.

So now I puree food and spoonfeed them and they are eating massive amounts and loving it - and sleeping all night!

So I thought I'd start a thread for others who are doing the same as me - we can swap ideas for meals and say what works for us (ie what makes them sleep ).

I gave my twins four plums plus ebm and baby rice for breakfast and they have had a big bowl of sweet potato, haricot beans and brocolli for lunch. More of the same for tea (plus maybe some swede and parsnip). They are 6.5mths old.

What did yours eat today?

hallo. am in canada for a year with baby and his Dr here is very annoyed that i have started solids at 5 months (funny, cos i'm a UK paediatric doc and the "evidence" is very poor )- anyway we're on 2 meals a day and he seems to love puree- but i'm not sure how much is too much - books say each baby is different- he takes two AK cubes and still eating my hand afterwards but i try to offer breast, thinking he may be thirsty... but not interested. how much did yours take- we started two weeks ago.thanks

giantkatestacks · 13/01/2009 14:26

Hi freakgeek - how big is an AK cube? my dd will vary between no cubes at all (lunch today) but she would have some grated cheese and some banana in the end and about 6-8 normal ice cube sized cubes. If shes obv still hungry after a main course then I tend to fill her up on natural yoghurt...

wahwah1270 · 13/01/2009 15:55

hello

DD still wont eat without screaming - advice from hv was to "perservere" wtf

giantkatestacks · 13/01/2009 16:13

When she says persevere does she mean even when shes screaming or keep offering then take it away each time when its refused - the latter I think is ok but not the former...

I think every time you eat I would just stick her in the high chair and put something on the tray - a soldier of toast or some grated cheese or some pasta if thats what you're having and let her play with it.

How much milk/many feeds is she having a day?

mookickkick · 13/01/2009 16:14

poor you, wahwah. does she actually eat or only scream and refuse? why not give her a rest day or two and then try again? my dd is a bit choosy and likes a very smooth puree that isn't too cold. i also shovelled some into dh's mouth as an example!

wahwah1270 · 13/01/2009 16:18

Thanks moonkick that is good advice, she screams and refuses, will try again in a few days.

I had to say something on MrsMagooo/MrsJamin's thread

Hope I haven't caused any probs??

I wasn't really sure where wold be the right place to post

I was a bit nervous that I might get some yelling for weaning prior to 6 months

bitofadramaqueen · 13/01/2009 20:00

Hi freakgeek I started on about two ice cubes worth and just kept increasing by a cube every few days. I store food in pots now, so not sure how many cubes it would be. It is hard though, I met a bunch of mums and baby friends today and weaning was the hot topic - no-one seems sure that they're giving enough! My DS takes everything I give him, I think he would just keep eating and eating if I kept loading his spoon!

wahwah sorry its not going so well with you.

wahwah1270 · 13/01/2009 20:03

sorry kate missed your post - she's bf on demand - she doesnt seem to have dropped any feeds so quite a lot...

Essie3 · 13/01/2009 20:51

I got some of the Rachel's yoghurts too - are they the my first yoghurts? Or something else? Anyhow, they were the only ones I saw that didn't have added sugar. And they're lovely! I used to live v. close to the original farm. But I was devastated to see that they're made in Ireland now.
Will look for the Plum ones, though. The plum purees are delicious too! So are the Ella's ones, but today I cracked open a Cow and Gate chicken dinner thing, and it was apparently totally bland. (I'm veggie and don't cook meat, so I'm introducing meat through jars. I know...)

whinegums · 13/01/2009 20:51

Just a quicky - am laughing at your post on MrsMagoo's thread Neenz, surprised you haven't caused another ruck!

giantkatestacks · 13/01/2009 21:52

essie - just to say did you see the comment many moons/posts ago about the low protein level in the supposedly meaty jars? something to look out for anyway - its just ridiculous with some of them...

why arent you weaning them veggie btw? it will be tricky to get them to eat meat when they are toddlers if you dont eat it anyway wont it -or is your dp a meateater? sorry for the qs - just being nosey

wahwah - i dont know how you mix demand bf and weaning - my dd has/had got a bit of a bf routine going on - that way i knew when she was likely to be hungry. Someone else must have experience of this though - and you would still leave an hour either way I suppose. For dinner (5-6pm) I give the solids first and then a bf before bed and she absolutely wolfs it down (hasnt bf since around 2-2.30).

Hi Sleepycat, some say 6mths for wheat, others 12m. Are there any allergies in your family? If not then go ahead. Shredded wheat is good cos it is 100% wheat (no added salt/sugar), not sure about ready brek and weetabix - check the box. I give DTs Oatibix and porridge made with normal porridge oats.

Re yogurt, can;t find any yogurts except little stars and petit filous which have sugar, I bought them once and the Dts loved them but would rather they had no added sugar, so now I mix a spoonful of natural yogurt with a spoonful of Hipp fruit pot and they love it.

whinegums · 13/01/2009 22:26

Essie, Rachel's yogurts (or rather my/DS's yogurts!) will be delivered tomorrow, but they sound like the same thing. I will of course have to give them the mummy taste test before allowing DS to have them.

Ella's Kitchen have started to do fish pie and chicken casserole in pouches if you're after non veggie stuff. Haven't tried them yet, so not sure what they're like. Oh, and Plum have some meat/fish ones too.

Sleepycat, we're moving onto Ready Brek this week - AK says ok from 6 months (and Weetabix etc) and just as nutritious and a LOT cheaper than baby cereal. Might hold off on the coco pops for a bit longer .

bitofadramaqueen · 14/01/2009 15:18

Oh, I bought some oatibix for DS. Bit of a think question, but would you add milk and then give bits of oatibix finger food style or would you mash it up? Have never had oatibix or anything (I'm a cornflakes girl ) so no idea really.

neenztwinz · 14/01/2009 15:29

I just mash Oatibix up - find it needs lots of milk. I do 4oz for just one biscuit.

OP posts:
bitofadramaqueen · 14/01/2009 16:13

Thanks neenz. Do you use formula or cows milk?

Amberc · 14/01/2009 20:20

wahwah - My LO hated being in his high chair and got arsey when I put him in it. I stuck on suction toys and put the chair in front of the TV and that helped - wasn't the food, just the chair that p'd him off. Not sure if that's helpful... Also I have to wait for him to be in the right mood now (a good one!) otherwise I may as well not bother. My LO is nearly 7 months and has just started opening his mouth. I gave him a little at each meal and eventually once he'd got over his torture chair phobia he gave in!

Essie3 · 14/01/2009 20:30

Hi all, another big sick up from Iestyn tonight. I think I'm overfeeding him... He had half a glass jar (so around 80ml?) of penne, tomato and courgette, then a rachel's yoghurt - almost all of it.

A lovely birthday present for me! It was penne, tomato and courgette. Mmmm!

GiantKateStacks not weaning him veggie because I don't want him to be that fussy! But also, DH is a meat eater, and Iestyn will be going to nursery soon where he will get meat lunch with all the other children, and my Mum will be doing childcare for me and she's a meat eater.
The jars were a convenience - to save him being fussy! But Mum has offered to put aside some of their meaty meals whenever it's appropriate for me to puree, so that's problem solved really.

whinegums · 14/01/2009 20:44

Oh Essie, what a shame. That doesn't sound so much to me, but maybe you could give Iestyn a break between courses - might be a bit much all at once IYSWIM.

Hope work was ok, and happy birthday (again! have already wished you happy birthday on the PN thread).

You do know your thread will kick off with BLW'ers dontcha! We'll be there to back you up [drinking wine and ready for a fight emoticon]

Neenz -love your response on the other thread!
