Weaning

Find weaning advice from other Mumsnetters on our Weaning forum. Use our child development calendar for more information.

Anyone else find the actual weaning info out there a bit rubbish? What did you end up using?

Hi all - when we started weaning our girls, I found the actual advice out there pretty thin on the practical stuff, and a few friends going through it since have said the same. Wondering if it was just us, or a more common problem.

For anyone who's been through it (recently or way back) - a few questions:

  • What book/app/website, if any, did you actually end up using, and would you recommend it?
  • Was there anything that felt like a waste of money or time?
  • If you could wave a magic wand, what's the one thing that would've made this stage easier?
Would really appreciate hearing how it went for others - trying to work out if this is worth doing something about, or if it's just been our own bad luck.

We used ”How to wean your baby” by Charlotte Stirling Reed - very informative and comprehensive.

Solid Starts app is also a very good resource, shows pictures of how to cut each food into safe shapes for baby to eat.

Yes this is all we needed plus conversations with my antenatal groups as we all started together. Apart from my child’s lack of interest in food for the first 6 months of weaning it wasn’t stressful from an information perspective.

I had my babies in early 90s. There is a lot more helpful advice out there now. Back then we just gave baby rice then were expected to use jars. I bulk bought and froze. Was considered a bit crazy for the extra work. I just didn’t want to give my babies food I didn’t like myself.

I love the Solid Starts App. Helped me give my grandchildren appropriate food when minding them.

It all seems so much easier now.

SOLID STARTS

It's not a method to follow (though they do also sell courses/guides I believe now), just a very very evidenced based, professional, modern approach to BLW that is completely accessible.

They were just starting out when my first child was weaning and we would follow along on their instagram as the founder was weaning her twins and sharing things that way. The company has grown massively since then and the work they've put into it is incredible.

There is genuinely no need for any other weaning account/advice/business to exist when solid starts already does.

They get a bad rap but I went to a talk done by a local health visitor and found it very helpful. They told us the rules about salt, honey and shellfish and encouraged us to feed them literally everything else. They also taught us the difference between choking and just gagging or retching.

I actually found it far simpler than I was expecting and didn't feel the need for a guide, just some finger food ideas. I didn't bother buying baby food once I knew that they could just eat mashed up or chopped up food that we ate. It seemed like a waste of money.
