Baby in pain after starting solids

Baby is 6 months old and started purees a couple of weeks ago (she had tried a green veg puree pack for a few days and then carrot).

She was awful a couple of hours after having it. Straining, arching her back and going red in the face.

We stopped because she was crying so much each day.

It’s been a couple of weeks, so we’ve tried broccoli today & within 2 hours, she’s straining etc again.

Google tells me this can be normal? I don’t remember this with my 2 other kids. Should I skip a few more days and try again? Or do I need to keep trying a tiny bit each day so her stomach gets used to it?

Not sure of the best approach. Thanks

Broccoli and green veg are notorious at causing gas so maybe try her on something else for a while and then reintroduce the veg later. Maybe start with things like banana, strawberries, apple sauce, porridge, toast.

My dd is 18 but I was advised to stay with sweet potato, carrots and parsnips. Parsnip and pair was a real favourite. Twins are 14 and never did purée just had bits of small chopped veggies. Advice does change though. I’d try different veg and just a little at a time.

When you say pack I’m assuming shop bought? Just buy fresh veg and mash it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Maybe give her a day off but then try something different? There is a great list of first foods to try in this guide from the Caroline Walker trust.

I’d also give her some finger foods to try so that she develops he
r hand coordination and learns to chew and swallow. So if for instance you gave her some banana-cado you could give her some banana as a finger foods.

Solid starts is good as it shows you how to offer finger foods in an appropriate way for their age. They show bananas in this link Smile
