SHEENA1 · 22/05/2008 13:23

whats wrong with bottle feeding ??

Christiania · 22/05/2008 13:45

It's dull and difficult, as I said - I would hate to get up at 1am to sterilise bottles.

I avoid washing up at the best of times.

SHEENA1 · 22/05/2008 13:51

i dont sterelise bottles at 1am do it beofre bed make bottles up prior and put in fridge take what u need to bed with you but if ur like me my 2 yr old ddd sleeps 7pm till 8am and ds 13 weeks sleeps 7pm till 7am no need to get up during the night i say bf is dull and boring

HonoriaGlossop · 22/05/2008 13:51

How do you know it's dull and difficult? What's your evidence? Have you done it?

And you don't 'get up at 1am to sterilise bottles' you wake to feed your baby just like a bf ing mother does. It's not dull if it's the only way you have to feed your child, it's precious and enjoyable and bonding and enriching

I am not anti bf, support the right, till my dying day etc etc etc but supporting bf doesn't have to mean making incorrect statements about ff

Christiania · 22/05/2008 13:57

Yes I have done it and I hated it.

Sorry to cause any offence but I really meant what I said - if i was having to do that every night again I would be desperate to start feeding my child other stuff so I could stop doing the bottles.

I don't think bottle feeding is to be scorned especially as it is often the only option but I did hate doing it. Sorry once again.

Lulumama · 22/05/2008 13:58

sheena1, i would read some of teh threads on here re early weaning

thre is evidence that solids before 17 weeks can cause harm

that is an absolute fact

Christiania · 22/05/2008 13:59

Sheena you sound very organised, I wish I had been able to do it like that, I might not have found it such a chore if so.

Christiania · 22/05/2008 14:01

Erm, and have you tried breastfeeding, Sheena, before you go slating that!

At least it allows you to stay in bed while you are doing it!

HonoriaGlossop · 22/05/2008 14:03

that was very graciously done christiania

but no wonder you hated it if you were up at 1am sterilising! I think serious accidents would have occured in my house if I'd had to deal with boiling water at that time in the morning!

SHEENA1 · 22/05/2008 14:03

I can stay in bed while bottle feeding i had 2 terrible pregnancys so never had a choice to or not

but bf only u can do it ff partner or anyone can help out i couldnt handle bf on my own i need sleep

splishsplosh · 22/05/2008 14:15

I don't understand why people are in such a hurry to wean. I found it much more tedious, all that pureeing / trying to pursuade an unwilling baby to try some actual food etc, and even when she became more enthusiastic about food, it never made her sleep any better

tiktok · 22/05/2008 15:21

Sheena, it would help you to read some of the weaning threads on here...they explain what the risks are with feeding non-milk stuff as early as you did.

And this is a friendly hint - mumsnet doesn't 'do' textspeak

I am not meaning to be rude about it, but it's harder to read and, well, as I say, if you read these boards a lot you'll see very little of it.

BeachBunni · 22/05/2008 16:18

Not usually on the weaning boards but just wanted to say to prettybird about the comment yesterday about her colleague weaning a prem baby. It is actually advised to wean prem babies earlier as they do not have the iron reserves to carry them til 6 months. For some reason, weaning is the only thing they do not adjust the age for, so your friend would be weaning at 24 wks if she waited another two wks, not 19 corrected age. Only know this because my own ds was 5 wks early and I was told to wean him at 20 wks unadjusted by the doctor, although I waited until 23 wks...Caused a lot of confusion for me at the time...

Lulumama · 22/05/2008 16:19

iron is in milk too. afaik, the weaning age should be adjusted due to the immaturity of the gut... but i might be wrong, but am sure it has been discussed on here before.

BeachBunni · 22/05/2008 16:20

Sorry that should be she will be weaning at 21 wks unadjusted. Really can't count.

BeachBunni · 22/05/2008 16:25

Yes, that's true lulumama, iron is in milk too. I contacted bliss who told me not to adjust the age but I suppose it would depend on how prem your baby really was. Now you know why I found it confusing.

ConnorTraceptive · 22/05/2008 16:37

DS2 was 11 pound at birth and now at 12 weeks he's weighing in at a rather hefty 20 pounds but is very content with breast milk.

Sorry but I just don't think the Large baby = early weaning arguement stands up.

VictorianSqualor · 22/05/2008 16:50

beachbunny, DD was 8weeks premature and I was told to definitely not wean at unadjusted age, the gut is even less mature in prem babies (understandably so).
I'm both surprised (actually, I'm not surprised) and saddened to hear that a doctor is recommending this, and using rubbish about iron stores to back up his theory, at the most a prem baby could possibly need supplements but as Lulu says there is iron in milk.

VictorianSqualor · 22/05/2008 17:01

Some poster called Victoria seems to have spoken sense

Tbh victoriansqualor, I was very uneasy about weaning him at that age, which is why I waited a few more weeks until I felt he was ready myself. Even caused a lot of arguments with my mother and oh who were telling me to go ahead and wean him. "I started with you at 6 wks" my mum said and I felt like saying - well maybe that's why I got bad eczema as a baby. It's so hard to know what to do when the professionals are telling you not to adjust the age, in fact go earlier, but you're looking at a tiny baby, so I just went by own child.
