What is so good about the tripp trapp highchairs that everybody goes on about?

Hello, I am wondering why people actually like these? I look after a little girl who has one and HATE feeding her in it. I seriously couldn't think of a worse high chair. It drives me mad! Give me a plastic tray one anyday!

AitchTwoCiao · 13/05/2008 11:09

there's a problem with them at the factory or somesuch, so that's why they're not in stock. and you're right, you know, we didn't have all this special baby stuff when we were kids and we're not (all) deformed as a result.

Caz10 · 13/05/2008 15:11

OK then tripp-trappers - where's the cheapest place to get one??

Dragonbutter · 13/05/2008 16:00

from the grandparents!?!?
it's the only way as far as I can see.

Caz10 · 13/05/2008 17:15

lol dragonbutter! i have the dosh (well most of it) it was a leaving pressie from old job, and i thought a tripp trapp would be a nice thing to be able to tell them i'd got with it

NappiesGalore · 13/05/2008 18:34

backinaction.co.uk have a price promise and sell the full range of options. thats where i got mine.

nocluemum · 13/05/2008 19:07

Babydan do one that is like tripptrap but cheaper - not sure by how much but we got that one as it was a fair amoutn. They look fairly similar in the pictures although cant comment in real life.

Dragonbutter · 13/05/2008 19:09

babydan
They look exactly the same. Does anybody have one of these?

designerbaby · 13/05/2008 19:37

Have to say - I got a BabyDan highchair - remarkably similar to the tripp trapp for a third of the price...

Might be worth looking into...

Ooops - evidently should have 'refreshed' before posting.

I think my BabyDan is pretty much exactly the same as my friends' Tripp Trapp...

You can't do the groovy colours, but hey, I'd have gone for whitewash to go with my kitchen anyway...

I have three tripp trapps around my table, all children can reach and be part of the family meal, can sit and colour (not on a highchair with a tray as you're restricted to how far they can reach and size of paper). I love them.

quint · 13/05/2008 19:56

I thought about the plastic fold up one, but in reality everyone I know who has one never does fold it up, so I still say the tripp trapp is better on space

Sanguine · 13/05/2008 22:25

Sorry, this is me being incredibly nosey, tell me to get lost if you like, but I'm still a bit puzzled. If you have visitors and you want to cook for them, I'm assuming you don't make them sit in tripp trapps (or maybe you do??). So - where do the tripp trapps go when you want to use your dining chairs? and where do your dining chairs live the rest of the time?

We only have a little flat, and it'll be a bit of a squeeze with a high chair, but I'm consoling myself that we can fold it up and put it in our bedroom or something when we need our one and only living/dining space to work for grown-ups.

Dragonbutter · 13/05/2008 22:30

we have a little table that had four chairs. two of them are replaced with tripp trapps and the other two are in the garage. we hardly get visitors really, but we just bring in the extra chairs if we need them.

Hulababy · 13/05/2008 22:33

It is fab. We have had ours since DD was 5 months. She is now 6y old. It has been used almost daily and is still in fantastic condition. It looks good and fit in well with out dining table. i loved the idea of DD being sat at the table with us, and not eating apart from us - making meal times a social event from the start. They are great for better piosture as there is a foot step they can reach at every stage as they grow. And the chair lasts forever as it can be used by adults in chair mode.

It was our best buy and I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

I would have hated to have some big gaudy coloured plastic thing sat in my open plan living room - it would have looked so out of place.

Sanguine · 14/05/2008 08:55

Oh, garage, of course. Maybe we'll have one of them one day.

Our gaudy second-hand plastic high chair does look out of place in our tasteful neutral-coloured open plan living/dining room, but then, so does the play nest and the general detritus of garish toys. At least now the sun is out we don't have a giant airer filled with washable nappies as well

Caz10 · 14/05/2008 12:44

The space issue is a massive one for us actually - ie we have none - we have one small living/dining room open to the kitchen - the kitchen is a galley type so no space for a table, just a row of units.

Our dining table sits 4 at a push, and in fact really only 3 as one side of it is pushed up against the wall so it can fit! I think the tripp trapp or similar is the only one that will physically fit, the footprint on these plastic ones is so huge.

If we can push the tripp trapp up against the table when in use there will still be space on the floor for dd's bouncy chair or bumbo - again not possible with a bigger one.

dh is just very worried about his TV which is within wheetabix flinging range of the table...

quint · 14/05/2008 22:53

We also have a small dining area in our flat, when we have people over, if I need to use the tripp trapp I sit on it and the other one gets put in another part of the flat. Our table has 4 dining chairs along the sides (one side is against the wall with just enough room for the chair backs) and the TT's are at either end.

If you don;t have much space then I would say that the TT's are perfect, its all very well being able to fold up some of the other makes and put them away if people come over, but in reality they are out all day long as you use them so often not just at mealtimes.

I know they're expensive but I still believe you get what you pay for, they're sturdy, excellent for posture, last for years (DD1's is 4 years old and we got DD2's off of Ebay shes had it over a year now and the previous family had it for 8 years - no sign of it wearing out yet) which leads me onto where you can get it cheaper - Ebay, then buy the cushions new to spruce it up a bit.

MrsJamin · 16/05/2008 08:26

What's the difference between the Tripp Trapp, Babydan and the Hauck Alpha then? The Hauck Alpha is currently £28 from Tesco so I need to know what's wrong with it?! Would love to know what people think about it as I can't seem to find many opinions on it.

WinkyWinkola · 16/05/2008 08:41

Dunno, Mrs. Jamin. But I do believe you get what you pay for so maybe it's not put together as well or something. Would have to see the chair. But then it depends what you want or value in a chair.. .

I love our TTs because they are small, compact and comfortable. And the DCs can sit right up to the table with us and eat. DS is three and is still very comfy in his even with the baby bar on. Plus it means he can't get down whenever he wants and has to learn to sit with everyone at meal times.

Quick question: Why do people buy those massive plastic high chairs with ginormous trays that need an extension to put them in? They're so ugly and space consuming.

MrsBadger · 16/05/2008 08:45

the major diff between the tripptrapp and the Tesco one is the shape of the frame - you can see the back leg on the tesco one would stick out into the room from under the table whereas the 'feet' on the Tripptrapp only stick out acouple of inches once it's pushed up to the table

if you have a small kitchen / dining room, or have the table in th eliving room where you have to look at it all the time this can mak e abig differnce.

obv the child won't care though

cupsoftea · 16/05/2008 09:05

my dd was too big to big to sit comfortable with the holding in the chair bit attached.

Sanguine · 16/05/2008 10:31

OK, I think I may need to eat some humble pie today. I saw a tripp trapp in person yesterday, and they are very beautiful and practical. I also saw (and salivated over) a Stokke Xplory, and was really pleasantly surprised at the thought that had gone into design. Don't have the cash to buy a tripp trapp or an Xplory, but I do agree they are nice.

Winky, people like me buy plastic highchairs. The reason is that they are readily available at NCT sales, they are inexpensive, they do the job while you need 'em, then you can move them along.

It's not beautiful, but it is functional. And the tray does come off, you know. We have it pulled up to the table.
