Help - 8 month old had pesto for tea ...is this ok? In mild panic mode ...

My 8 month old dd has just eaten pasta and red pesto for her tea and now i'm in a mild panic mode (ingredients inc pine nuts, cashew nuts and salt) - please someone tell me that this is ok??

The tea was meant for my older dd's (i usually give the baby hers before i add the pesto) but dh gave the same meal to all the children.

Incidently, she loved it

I don't see a problem with this as a one off. As long as she doesn't usually have too much salt in her diet. Stop worrying!

Baffy · 18/03/2008 18:19

Recommendations are no nuts/salt aren't they, especially under 1... but I'd imagine that as a one off it should be ok and you don't need to panic.

(Happy to stand corrected.)

But wanted to post to add support!

Absolutely fine, as far as I can see. DS certainly ate pasta and pesto at that age (can't remember about DD....she didn't really eat anything though! )

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 18/03/2008 18:25

mine were all weaned onto pesto!

Snap - my nearly 8 month old had gnocci and red pesto last night for her dinner, but it was deliberate on my part!

I totted up the salt to make sure it was less than 1g for the day. And I'm not concerned about the nuts because I read some research which suggested that avoiding nuts was potentially a cause of life threatening allergies, whereas counrties where babies are practically weaned on large quantities of nuts have practically no incidences of nut allergies. Cashews are legumes, anyway, I believe.

Don't fret, all is well!

(my dd loved it BTW)

It's up to .6g of salt for the under 1s, but I wouldn't worry about a bit of pesto. DD loves it and she's 8 mo too.

Seona1973 · 18/03/2008 19:57

the recommended salt guidelines are as follows:

up to 12 months - less than 1g a day
1 to 3 years - 2 g salt a day (0.8g sodium)
4 to 6 years - 3g salt a day (1.2g sodium)
7 to 10 years - 5g salt a day (2g sodium)
11 and over - 6g salt a day (2.4g sodium)

I am sure the amount in a bit of pesto is not going to do any harm. Re: nuts, my ds had peanut butter on his toast from 8 months as I had read that if there is no family history of allergies then peanuts are ok from 6 months.

Beenleigh · 18/03/2008 20:02

nuts fine, she obv isn't allergic, that's the only worry apart from choking, mine love pesto, and nuts, they are 1.3 and 2.5, one pesto meal isn't going to do any salt damage either

oh lovely, dd ate pesto at that age (prob earlier) and loved it. how much of it can they actually eat of it, salt-wise, and i thought it was peanuts that were banned. is it really all nuts? dd loved cashew nut butter and can still find a cashew in a nut mix in less than a millisecond...

JanineDB · 26/04/2026 17:59

Nuts are fine to eat from 6 months

TinyMouseTheatre · 27/04/2026 06:32

@JanineDB I think you’re a bit late to the party. The DD in question will be an adult by now Smile
