I manage ok with breakfast (weetabix, porridge or yogurt with fruit) and dinner (usually a bit of what I’ve cooked for myself). But I struggle to know what to feed for lunch?

He can’t eat eggs. Everything else is ok. But he isn’t a good eater and can only manage soft mush, not bread or sandwiches or pieces of veg. I don’t cook at lunchtime and usually have a sandwich, toast or salad, or sometimes nothing at all.

What can I feed that’s quick and easy to eat, and doesn’t need loads of cooking? I’ve tried veg soup, beans with toast or jacket potato, and beyond that I’m stuck.

Sardines on toast? Boys can have oily fish upto 3 times a week, girls twice.

Turkey Twizzlers. You can freeze these in batches.

Pasta with some pesto.

Hummus Burgers.

Cauliflower Cheese.

Salmon Pasta should make a nice lunch for both of you Smile

Forgot to ask, is there a reason he can’t manage bread or veg? Do you think he’s being a bit lazy or could there be more to it? My DS had tongue tie and it hugely affected what he could eat.

SputnikBear · 03/11/2018 09:05

He can only manage bread if it’s soaked in liquid such as soup or bean juice. I doubt if he could manage pasta unless it was shredded and mixed with a lot of runny sauce.

I’m looking for no-cook suggestions please. I don’t cook at lunchtime. Making a sandwich or microwaving something is about my limit in terms of cooking during the day.

I don’t know why he can’t manage bread. Chunks of any food make him vomit. He can only manage fairly soft foods.

Also he can’t eat egg and the free-from bread isn’t exactly soft.

Could you batch cook something, freeze it, then microwave it warm for lunch?

Or just bought some baby pasta shells from boots that I was going to cook with a tomato/veg sauce then freeze in ice cube tray. A few icecubes for lunch, microwaved warm could be good?

I also struggle with this tbh.

harrietm87 · 03/11/2018 09:09

Avocado/tuna mayo mushed on bread or rice cake, soft cheese and pear, houmous with crudités dipped in

Ginfizplease · 03/11/2018 09:10

Left overs from the night before?

SputnikBear · 03/11/2018 09:14

He can’t eat eggs. So mayo is out. No omelettes, ordinary bread or crumpets, or anything which contains egg.

Does he have to have the free from bread? I thought most sliced white was egg and dairy free?

Can’t help with the vomiting though sorry. There lots of threads in the MN archive about sensitive gag reflexes.

To be honest, I’d be tempted to offer him the food he needs to chew, even if he does vomit, just to build up his muscles. Chewing helps speech development later on.

As agree that if you absolutely don’t want to cook in the day, can you batch cook and freeze things? Alternatively, if you’ve made things like shepherds pie, could you make more than normal and freeze the leftovers in baby portions?

Roberts sliced wite appears to be EF Smile

JiltedJohnsJulie · 03/11/2018 09:20

This Mayo is egg free so would suit tuna, mayo and sweet corn with a jacket potato Smile

Bog standard sliced bread doesn't contain egg, crumpets don't either. When the toddler I look after was 9 months old some favourite lunches were mashed avocado on toast, baked potato with cheese, soft bread sandwiches with cream cheese or smooth peanut butter, rice cakes and hummus, pasta with tomato sauce (she found the penne tube shapes easier to handle than twists or shells).

SputnikBear · 03/11/2018 09:27

Thanks, will have a look for that mayo. I don’t have wheat bread in the house because I have a strong wheat allergy myself and can’t touch the stuff. The free from bread is safe for both of us but isn’t very soft unfortunately. I might try batch cooking some mini things like shepherds pie.

Tgis pasta looks like a nice lunch for both of you. That’s if you don’t mind making a little tomato sauce to go with it Smile

My little girl loved houmous with pitta. Pitta bread prob not any gd but maybe if you cld find something else to put it on that cld work. Soft cheese spread also gd, is there any sort of crackers you could possibly use?

mindutopia · 03/11/2018 18:52

I would freeze extra leftovers from whatever you make for dinners. Salmon and mash is good and soft. Mine loves tuna or tinned salmon with mayo (use vegan). Today we had hummus on breadsticks. If he won’t eat breadsticks, find something similarly stick like you can put it on. Cold shredded chicken or whatever you have in your sandwiches (sliced turkey, ham, cheese) with some sort of veg.

It might be worth askimg for EF & WF lunch ideas in the allergy section too Spuntnik Smile

Spam88 · 05/11/2018 16:19

I think leftovers from your tea is probably the way to go. I think I'd persevere with giving him some finger foods to get used to as well though, assuming there's no medical reason he can't cope with them. Triggering their gag reflex while it's safely quite far forward is an important lesson in not shoving too much food in their mouths or pushing things too far back.

Lazypuppy · 07/11/2018 19:11

Tuna?

My LO has tuna and toast a few days a week

Spam88 · 07/11/2018 21:36

Don't know why I never give my daughter guns, she'd definitely love it!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 07/11/2018 22:18

You’re considering giving her guns Spam?

bluepixie · 08/11/2018 08:10

Jacket and cheese and low sugar/salt beans
Home made fish fingers
Lentil stew
Mine loves anything in a cheese sauce - so I batch make cheese sauce (butter cheese milk) and put either cod and peas in or pasta and veg or salmon and veg or just loads of veg!

Spam88 · 08/11/2018 08:53

It's like my autocorrect wants me to look stupid. I meant tuna. She'd probably enjoy guns as well, but not so much for eating.
