DS is five and a half months old and is seemingly ready for food now. Am quite interested in the whole BLW process but dont really know where to start.

COuld someone please give me some basic tips to get me started.

you wait until they are 6 months then put finger foods on the tray and let them feed themselves

is the basic thing

babyledweaning.com is a good blog about it. I wanted to do it but dd3 seems a bit behind in her development and cannot sit up very well and her eye hand coordination is poor - not seriously but she is weeny.

She is 6 months next week and doesnt really put stuff in her mouth unless you guide it there and she likes the taste, but I have given her mashed banana (lumpy) and mashed potato from a spoon, she has also gummed a piece of toast quite happily. From now on I am going to give her mashed versions of our food and some finger foods until she gets better eye hand coordination.

the nice thing about waiting until 26 weeks is that they can basically eat anything.

So - i HAVE to wait until ds is 6 months? Can i offer pureed stuff in the meantime then ?

You can, but if you do then it's not BLW, as baby can't feed himself with puree.

TheDaVinciCod · 17/10/2006 21:28

what Is baby lead weasning

TheDaVinciCod · 17/10/2006 21:29

dont you jsyust feed them# god why is evrythign so compliacted

MandyBOO · 17/10/2006 21:30

And do you start at one meal per day or can i start off with every meal iyswim?

EnidVorhees · 17/10/2006 21:30

yes give him purees and give finger food later

personally I think a mixture is fine

CastsSpellsWitchySpells · 17/10/2006 21:30

Are you serious Cod? It's letting the baby lead the weaning, by feeding itself. Just put food in front of it and hope it eats some!

TheDaVinciCod · 17/10/2006 21:31

WHY?

TheDaVinciCod · 17/10/2006 21:31

just feed the bugger
god youll eb waiting all day

VoodooBanana · 17/10/2006 21:32

I think you just start at lunch, I think you only do one type of thing at a time so you can pinpoint if any allergies

you have to be watching like a hawk to avoid choking

swOOPingbatS · 17/10/2006 21:32

BLW make it not complicated, cod, that is the beauty of it.
Pureing and mashing and stuff makes it complicated..
and she only asked a question, that's what MN is here for

CastsSpellsWitchySpells · 17/10/2006 21:32

Oh absolutely agree Enid. Didn't mean to imply otherwise. That's what we've done in fact, but I don't class us as doing blw.

EnidVorhees · 17/10/2006 21:32

I do it when I have time and can be bothered, ie I gave her a mashed up banana today at about 11am then bfed, while the dds were having their tea she had a piece of broccoli and some pitta bread in her highchair (didnt eat much just sucked and plyed with it)

yesterday she had porridge and later mashed potato

I am just delighted to have bypassed very smooth purees and baby rice tbh

TheDaVinciCod · 17/10/2006 21:33

adn i am only quereying why you have to have a TLA fro "" giving the baby what it wants!"

TheDaVinciCod · 17/10/2006 21:33

i never did babyrice
straight on to sheperds pie

EnidVorhees · 17/10/2006 21:34

yes sheperds pie and apple crumble tomorrow for the wee one

VoodooBanana · 17/10/2006 21:34

god this thread is ace! I was starting to think a lot about weaning and pre=planning it (dd is 4mths now)

I just need to chill and she will wean herself!

swOOPingbatS · 17/10/2006 21:45

Some of the posts are a bit confusing.. i'll find a link to gill prapely's information.
What i did with ds2 was sit him down at the same time that we had our meals and provided him with some of the food we were eatng.
It started with steamed veg and fruit, and then after a few weeks moved onto snadwiches, cheese, pasta etc.
He got 3 meals a day form 6 months old and I never ever used a spoon to shove stuff into his mouth, just let him pick up what he could as he wanted to and eat whatever he was able to/wanted to

The recommendation is for around 6 onths as it is only then that most babies can hod the food properly and swallow it properly.
So yes, you can wean you abby before then, but if you give purees etc then it just isn't BLW- it doesn't fir the description.
{smile]
HTH and don't get put off by some of the other posts, it must be a slow night

swOOPingbatS · 17/10/2006 21:51

this is informative

\link{http://www.babycentre.co.uk/miscellaneous/referencedarticles/babyledweaning/orthis one may help}

there is a blog by aitch74 that my help too.

Just ignore the shepherd's pie on die one brigade, they will get bored in a minute

EnidVorhees · 17/10/2006 21:52

eh

no really she is getting sheperds pie and apple crumble!

she is 6 months, if she will eat it she can have it!

TheDaVinciCod · 17/10/2006 21:53

yes i really id feed ti too
all children still alove

EnidVorhees · 17/10/2006 21:54

what is wrong with either at 6 months

no oysters marinated in honey and nuts but apart from that they can have anything cant they?

swOOPingbatS · 17/10/2006 21:56

Enid, lol, sorry
thougt you were having a laugh.
I suppose if you are being pedantic then the bLW baby would be eating the stuff on her own. And the non BLW baby would have it spoonfed in by somebody else.

And if she is eating it on her own with her hands- yuk, what a mess!

EnidVorhees · 17/10/2006 21:58

yes sure

but tbh if they are happy and eating plenty of finger foods I don't see the problem with some mashed foods in the first couple of months
