Suggestions of foods for baby with strong gag reflex

I've just started weaning my 6m ds and am keen that he starts taking some food every day as it may help with his silent reflux issues. I wanted to go blw but he doesn't put food in his own mouth often and when he does, gags and vomits all over the high chair. Today I experimented by offering mashed avocado with a spoon. It wasn't an entirely smooth consistency but he seemed to enjoy it far more than when I offered it cut up.

So I'm putting blw aside for the moment and spoonfeed a while, but I don't want to puree everything either as I want to slowly develop his chewing ability. I'm thinking of trying porridge, mashed potato/squash/carrot/banana, etc. Does this seem to make sense, and are there any other foods that people would suggest? Thanks!

I started on all of the above with my little refluxer. She puked up quite a lot at first but she started to keep it down after a couple of weeks of weaning

I also purée apple and pear and I use it to mix into porridge etc

Thanks for the suggestion - will try that.
