Over heard conversation in Asda today re: jars

jmum6 · 12/04/2006 16:40

Was in Asda buying follow on milk when 2 women came looking at the baby food.

'Really can't be doing with cooking for him' says one woman.

'No' says the other 'what a waste of time.'

Didn't know whether to laugh or cry. :o

Tell her about that baby that died because it's parents fed it smash and gravy.

Enid · 12/04/2006 20:31

what buying jars

I dont think so

I think the comment was feeding your baby on them 24/7

PutAPeachyInYourSimnelCake · 12/04/2006 20:31

says it all Sad

Shock at the smash, bisto and wafer child!Makes me so Sad Must be hard to see Jodie!

Elf1981 · 12/04/2006 20:33

jodie1984 - your comment about "poor girl, where is her HV" should read "poor girl, where is her common sense".

Rhubarb · 12/04/2006 20:35

Here in France, jars are the norm. They put salt in them too, to educate the baby's palate apparently. They are overly mushed and taste disgusting. They also give them massive chocolate biscuit things as snacks, loads and loads of sweet things. Yet these kids grow up to be future chefs and particular foodies with a low rate of heart disease.

I mainly cooked for mine, but used jars when I couldn't be bothered or when we were going away anywhere.

Another volatile issue I think when the mother gets very defensive about her choice and others just come on to judge and gloat.

PinkTulips · 12/04/2006 20:36

does she understand what she's doing is wrong jodie or is it just ignorance, i mean if someone hasn't read all the books etc they might not understand what they're doing is so wrong. like some one suggested could you sit her down and explain that babies have actually died form eating it etc? althought he falling of the bed thing might indicate that would be a waste of time

sorry enid, read it wrong and saw redBlush

I can't understand why people like that (smash and gravy) think it's ok to feed their children such rubbish.
Surely they have hv, social workers etc who should be keeping an eye on them.
What about family and friends?

OP posts:
jodie1984 · 12/04/2006 20:38

i do feel sorry for my cousin as she was in a bad car crash 3 yrs a go and was in a coma for 4 mths but she is ok now a bit slower than before in speech and reactions, this is why her mother 'turns a blind eye'. but she had sex, got pregnant, had a baby so she should be responsible for her, this might sound harsh but she hardly does anything, her dd has never slept in a cot because it is too much like hard owrk to get out of bed when her wakes up.

PinkTulips · 12/04/2006 20:41

in that case maybe contacting her HV would be in order, if she can't cope now how is she going to cope with a toddler running around?

jodie1984 · 12/04/2006 20:45

the strange thing is her dd is chubby proberly from all the sugar, as spurts of energy from all the sugar but similar size to ds. but you can tell she is withdrawn, i have never seen her smile, sit, crawl or weightbear on her legs.

she lives about 2hrs away o see her every fe months when i take ds to see my mum and she gives me the latest news on 'what sh has done this time'

Angeliz · 12/04/2006 20:46

I've only got halfway on this thread.

Think it's one of the most judgemental ones i've ever read (and that's saying something!)
Dear Lord can poor Mothers not even shop now without people scrutinising what they're buying?
How perfect some of you must be to take such a tone.

edam · 12/04/2006 20:46

Jodie, seriously, think you need to explain to her that there's salt in processed food and that a baby died from being fed gravy made from granules.

Rhubarb · 12/04/2006 20:47

There's salt in the food over here, like I said, BABY FOOD, yet no babies are dying and there is no uproar about it.

Angeliz · 12/04/2006 20:48

Just caught up with the end og this thread.
I was obviously referring to jars not smash and gravy!!! That is awful!Sad

PinkTulips · 12/04/2006 20:50

shes probably ignoring the poor child for hours on end by the sound of it jodie, that would cause her to be withdrawn as she doesn't feel important, she probably doesn't crawl etc as shes never encouraged to, my dd had to be coerced into doing all those things as she was quite cautious. i'd seriouly consider taking action. the child is in danger on a daily basis, surely that justifies calling someone?

NotAnOtter · 12/04/2006 20:56

not read whole thread but had a good think about it - would rather spend time playing with my child than cooking for it if time was precious. I am lucky to be sahm and not have to sacrifice too much but if my time was limited i would ( to the tune of s - club......)
reach for the jars !

jodie1984 · 12/04/2006 20:57

its not that easy when its your own family tho

Enid · 12/04/2006 21:00

it is possible to do both though NAO Wink

colditz · 12/04/2006 21:00

Jodie, tell your health visitor your concerns, then the ball is in her court, and it can't be traced back to you.

PinkTulips · 12/04/2006 21:00

isnt the dd your family too? thats the way i'd feel about it

Enid · 12/04/2006 21:01

yes french babyfood has loads of salt

also they sell formula in all different flavours with sugar in

so sounds like your cousin is giving her a good french diet Wink

bed thing a bit worrying though

expatinscotland · 12/04/2006 21:03

i'd have used 'em lots if i'd been able to afford them. but alas, great things like breastfeeding and eating lots of beans and rice are not just things rich, white English people do b/c they're good for the child, but b/c they are all that is available or that people can afford in many places.
