Over heard conversation in Asda today re: jars

jmum6 · 12/04/2006 16:40

Was in Asda buying follow on milk when 2 women came looking at the baby food.

'Really can't be doing with cooking for him' says one woman.

'No' says the other 'what a waste of time.'

Didn't know whether to laugh or cry. :o

jmum6, that is quite an ignorant comment. There are many different levels of PND. People have been hospitalised with PND. Would you still say you don't understand why they don't cook?

jmum6 · 12/04/2006 20:14

Yes you are quite right colditz. Of course there will be lots of people who suffer far worse than me.

But i found cooking for ds helped quite a bit as it felt I was doing someing good and positive for him, and me.

got to add by the way, i can cook, but i know several moms who really can't- the burning water variety, so surely getting well prepared, nutricious(sp?) food from a jar is better than that? it does have to pass certain standards these days to be sold for babies.

i mean, when i was working and dp had dd there was no way in hell he could cook, if there was food i'd prepared in the fridge fine, but if not he had to use a jar.

Enid · 12/04/2006 20:15

I dont expect any of you to live by my standards, don't flatter yourselves Wink

burning water mums should bloody well learn to cook, its pathetic to not be able to

jmum6 · 12/04/2006 20:19

And anyway I wasn't saying I don't understand why they don't cook, I was just saying I don't understand the comments, felt a bit like (and please don't shoot me for this) people could use it as an excuse not to cook.

God I probably only cook once every few weeks and stock up thefreezer, and then give ds whatever we are having (if suitable) or frozen cubes or jars if we're out.
I'm certainly not perfect at all :o

I think that jars are very important because if they didn't exist I wouldn't be able to feel smug about never having given one to either of my children! With ds1 I had the whole perfect mum thing going and lovingly prepared the food for him (and I was bored being at home and wanted something to do with my time). With ds2 we were too skint for jars even if we'd wanted them. My crowning glory was getting a month's worth of pudding for £1!

jodie1984 · 12/04/2006 20:19

I went to see my cousin a few weeks ago her dd is 10mths 3wks older then my ds and i was sooo shocked i went out and bought her about 20 jars.
they only 'proper food she has eaten is mash potato with bisto gravy she has it at least once a day, she gives her them pink wafers when ever she crys and gives her a bottle full of that fiji milshake drink!!
she was in bed when i arrived and when she woke up i offered to get her as she was screaming, when i got there she had been asleep in a bouble bed and had rolled/crawled off!! when i told my cousin she said 'oh dont worry she does it all the time'

what can you do i feel sorry for her. where is her HV???

Enid · 12/04/2006 20:20

I think thats nice jmum6 to see it as something good and positive Smile

Is it dried mash? because if it is, with Bisto, there might be salt issues.

PinkTulips · 12/04/2006 20:22

bisto? Shock

god i suddenly don't feel so evil!

jodie1984 · 12/04/2006 20:23

that smash stuff but asda own brand

PinkTulips · 12/04/2006 20:25

is there a retching emoticon? who can't mash potatoes? good god my dp could mash potatoes!

PutAPeachyInYourSimnelCake · 12/04/2006 20:25

Hmmm, that would concern me somewhat I am afraid. Can you discuss with another family member?

LadyTophamHatt · 12/04/2006 20:25

Marthamoo, Ds2(my homecooking eater) has the worst diet out of mine too.

Ds3(the jar baby) probably eat the most varied diet off all 3 at his age IYKWIM.

jmum6 · 12/04/2006 20:26

And this child is still well and healthy?

OP posts:
PinkTulips · 12/04/2006 20:26

to all those who called buying jars child abuse, what do you call that then?

marthamoo · 12/04/2006 20:26

LTH - aha, conclusive proof Grin!

Enid · 12/04/2006 20:26

I gave jars about 3 times in total with both mine

one eats anything, one is a total PITA Wink

drosophila · 12/04/2006 20:27

DS eat lots of jar when he went to nursery as he had allegies and it was the safest thing to do. DD eats mainly homecooked food but it is a PITA. I cook with lots of spices so have to cook a different meal for DD , a different meal for DS due to his allergies and if DP is lucky I will throw something together for us. I tink I am starting to hate cooking although I love food.

Doesn't bother me what people do each to their own. One advantage of jars is that it is a easy way of getting organic food.

Enid · 12/04/2006 20:27

I don't think anyone called buying jars child abuse actually

jodie1984 · 12/04/2006 20:28

they all know about it, they didnt seem like it was a problem so i thought it was just me over reacting and i think they thought i was too. using pohrases such as ' we are not all as perfect you' and ' it ak for you, you have money' but she gets more money than me in benefits than i do working!!

PutAPeachyInYourSimnelCake · 12/04/2006 20:28

Um Jodie,

had that been a family of mine at HomeStart I would have passed to my boss as a concern, for her to decide whether to refer to social services. Although we'd work to try and change things first, you may not be in a position to be.

Sorry- but true.

PS- you can fall off a bed a thousand times and then get a head injury on the thousand-and-one time.

Enid · 12/04/2006 20:28

ah the old 'we arent as perfet as you' line

sounds familiar Wink

PinkTulips · 12/04/2006 20:30

sorry i think the exact term used was 'tantamount to child abuse' by enid at 5:12 pm Wink
