Should I start to think about things like baby porridge for DD already? She is 17 weeks old and ravenous in the mornings...

Apologies for being clueless about this but DD is 17 weeks old and is grabbing at our food when DH and I have her sitting near us at the table for breakfast.

We haven't let her have any yet but I don't think she is just playing as she is pretty insistent; she is also very hungry around breakfast time and drinking a LOT of milk with quite short breaks between bottles. For the rest of the day, she seems perfectly fine with her milk, it's just at breakfast time that she seems hungry.

She sleeps through the night from 19:30 to 07:00 and has just dropped her 04:00 bottle (hurray!) so I assume she's just extra hungry in the mornings?

This is much earlier than I had anticipated introducing any food. Do you think I should start considering things like baby porridge? Or should she just carry on watching us for now?

Am slightly worried she's going to bite my arm off and eat it if I don't do something Grin but I know all the guidelines say to wait until LO's are 6 months before weaning.

Confused

I would give her more milk, if I were you. She's sleeping so brilliantly- I wouldn't risk doing anything that might change it!

If she's sleeping well and happy during the day on milk, then stick with milk.
Grabbing at your food is bit of a red herring - they grab at anything and everything within range at this age don't they?

Ginshizz · 12/09/2012 14:43

Thank you, that makes total sense! I feel she is a little young for food ans yes, I want to keep the sleep routine going!

I'd stick with milk for a few more weeks - they say 17 weeks as the absolute earliest, but ideally more like 24. I felt like my baby was ready by about 22 and was happy with that, but 17 weeks is really quite early.

Milk as pp have said.

Thank you, my HV said to start when DD stars grabbing at food but I am much more comfortable with the idea of extra milk for now. Thanks for the reassurance

They grab at food because they grab at anything, shame on your hv.

HeidiHole · 15/09/2012 20:23

They grab at everything. My baby grabs at my mobile phone. I'm not going to let him eat it though!

Very good points!

Am now thinking of all the many things DD grabs at which I wouldn't want to her eat ... Plants, clothes, the dog ...!
